considering the mess betfairs floatation has got them into when they were trying too make the company look like a good buy and increase its valued wealth for a possible fat sale in the future, there performance in the market mirrors there lack lustre profit raising abilities and hass devalued there company, so betfair as took aim on its own children, the very people it wanted to embrace in its dream are now the held victims of its monopoly over them by hiking a totally unfair %60 rate of premium charge.

in the light of all the fiasco that has ballooned out of control over the last few years and more recently now is probably as good a time as ever for some other successful punters to try the same and start a new exchange or 2 up , after all if they can start off with a million and do it, surely it can be done again......ANY BIDDERS OUT THERE OR ANYONE WITH ANY IDEAS!

ok will do pxb
Report FINE AS FROG HAIR July 15, 2011 12:15 AM BST
Please rethink that hare.
Just read a few of pxb's posts. Does the name " Walter Mitty" come to mind ?
Anyway isn't a certain Irish billionaire already trying this without large success to date ?
Report tobermory July 15, 2011 12:15 AM BST
Betfair started with just £1 million?
Report FINE AS FROG HAIR July 15, 2011 12:17 AM BST
And even had competition in front of it at the time.
Report FINE AS FROG HAIR July 15, 2011 12:20 AM BST
You could even say it would be harebrained to contact and deal with pxb ?.
Bit slow tonight. Sorry.
Report pxb July 15, 2011 12:28 AM BST
One of the things I've done is roughly costed it.

USD25M including one year of operation.

I have Froggie blocked, but doubtless he is posting his usual obsessive spiteful drivel.
Report harechaser6 July 15, 2011 12:31 AM BST
to be honest am not sure how much they started with but it wasn`t much, probably less, but back then the model was unproven for exchanges, now its like sliced bread to the betting nation in the uk and abroad, the problem is that the betfair bread is going stale, betfair should never of floated on the stock market while they were still trying too do so many other things there timing was an error.

I reckon as do many others that the founders were looking too sell the company in the near future but considering they sold a chunk off before they needed to have the company valued based on its possible potential future worth to get a good price, the problem is stock market investors are really interested
in promises they really like numbers on paper and there 8 figure profits dont rack up in the big list of company performances out there so what with other problems of which there have been many the road has been bumpy for them.

the fact is there stock market price has dropped like a brick to nearly half, you would of been better off buying greek euros then buying shares in betfair and now they are nailing there top customer earners, stealing really, so they can show a bigger profit figure too there investors for sports betting.

it is betrayal on a grand scale i think , they have never really listened to anybodys ideas as too what would make the site and serveice better, they have sold us all a phoney dream of a site that welcomes winners when in reality they are greedy and self centered, i just want to know is there anyone out there that still holds the dream of a really "fair" betting exchange, and if so please lets not have it in purple, i really hate purple lol

You're right pxb.
You're absolutely clairvoyent.
Could be a useful attribute in starting up a betting exchange.
Report FINE AS FROG HAIR July 15, 2011 12:35 AM BST
You know this pxb/harechaser combo is looking more and more feasible by the minute.

I want in btw.
Just give me a number.
I'll even sell my Greek bond holdings to finance my share.

25 million for one years operation, thats really too much surely, have you got a break down of costings because you would not break even on the first year or maybe even the next at that rate pxb
Report FINE AS FROG HAIR July 15, 2011 12:48 AM BST
I'm actually pretty surprised that pxb hasn't started off one of his posts on here with his usual type of modest phraseology eg
" Given my proven successful track record in start up internet companies, I think I could very well be exactly the man to pull all this off "
Report harechaser6 July 15, 2011 12:48 AM BST
it hasnt cost betfair anything, we have paid for it all, we the lesser spotted punters, the hoards of sheep have thrown our money into betfair in the vain hope of getting rich one day only too find out that when we do ever make it, it wont be ours , most if not all of it will be in betfairs vault for good
Report DFCIRONMAN July 15, 2011 12:49 AM BST
"Betfair instead raised ~£1.2m in incremental angel financing from friends and family." allegedly........and probably other finance they had or borrowed. Read somewhere that was about £2M to set up co etc etc.....but this may well be "wrong"......£1M seems too little !

Jeez this thing is starting to look like it has legs. We're into detailed costings now and the thread is only about an hour or so long.

Report harechaser6 July 15, 2011 12:53 AM BST
its the nero effect, no not the cd copying software, the fact that power and greed corupts, when people, the few get it they want it all for them selves, and they wont share it, they wont even share there family trees and interbreed like the emperors of rome and our aristocracy.

if betfair folds under its own monolithic weight and collapses , yes when rome burns i expect all the betfair top execs and the fouders to be fiddling a tune just like nero did
Report FINE AS FROG HAIR July 15, 2011 12:53 AM BST

If so, I'm going for her. So back off all you other potential breeders.
Report harechaser6 July 15, 2011 12:56 AM BST
yes they are acting totally mad just like nero, slaying there beloved real investors, the top 500 may have made a mint but they have had too do some fast and fancy footwork too get there and to see them fleeced breaks my heart, i hope they revolt
Report pxb July 15, 2011 12:57 AM BST
The 25M is all costs ( software development, hiring, training, etc) thru to the end of year 1 of operation, and excluding any year 1 revenue.

Its the standard way VC's look for start up costings

froggy suspiciously keen to push the "it can't be done" line, imo.

the biggest danger to BF in this move is precisely this. ie some of the really big BF players grouping together to create a rival exchange.

the betquack example doesn't prove it can't be done, just that the people behind it can't do it.
Report allinadayswork July 15, 2011 5:58 PM BST

allin
I may in fact gamble more than most on here.
Whilst I don't trade I do bet pre-off in reasonably large volumes, putting up prices quite often 24 hrs before the off. As I bet 100% manually, I have to check very, very regularly to see if prices are being taken and in what amounts, if mkts have moved into macro levels that make my prices out of whack etc etc.
Hence I monitor things maybe more than most ( but not all) on here, not just when the events are in play.
I just pop into the forum to amuse myself. A bit of light reading to offset the repetition of checking and adjusting prices, which is all done based on algoritms.
For sure it could probably all be done with a bot, but as I am personally so extremely time rich as it is, it would leave me with virtually nothing to do all day, apart from swimming and drinking, which I do to large excess in any case.
Surely you wouldn't want me to get a real job would you?
That would really against the consensus ethos on here wouldn't it ?
Report FINE AS FROG HAIR July 15, 2011 8:12 PM BST
Viva
I do not know if it may  be possible to set up a successful rival exchange.
But I do know that the likes of pxb will not be able to do it. That's all.
He's harmless to me, but to himself ?
Now that's an entirely different matter.
He sort of reminds me in a way of the O'Dwyer character everybody seems to be going on about on here.
I haven't caught up with O'Dwyer's blog or posts at all, but it does all sound a bit similar.
Sad and dreamy and delusional.
