Dear askari,
The introduction of the API would have been a perfect moment (and anytime later) to introduce a per-transaction pricing model. Obviously it has not been wished. Sorry to say so but sport markets bears no no difference to index futures trading. Those operating with futures have no notion of investment. But still you fail to let us know how any PC will make losers lose more slowly, lose less or even win. When you find the answer, let me know because I know some millions looking for the Theory of Everything and possibly your explanation is the missing piece of the puzzle. Or you may phone Mr. Hawking yourself and let him know. |
|
By:
askari I was explaining why Betfair was initially successful...people saw the opportunity to make money in a totally free market.
Having no transaction charges is essential for beginners and newbies and in general but if someone is making too much money without offering enough in return(in Bfs view) it is a far better tool, where the detail can be honed to target the right individuals and also you can discriminate between markets such that markets where there is no liquidity don't incur transaction charges. It would even up the balance betweeb gamblers and traders, it would be harder to avoid, there would be no sense that the company was stealing your profits, with each bet placed you'd know where you stood and there would be none of this sequential nonsense. Much much much better. |
|
By:
saint-pilgrim, I'm not sure I said that imposing a pc on winners wd make it _definite_ that losers wd lose more slowly, esp. if bf are planning on taking a lot of the slack themselves and replicating these long-term winners' offers.
If conceivably, though, the losers are getting matched to players who win dependent on a full-book market-making strategy, not a sharp pricing strategy, they may get matched at fractionally better prices and thus lose more slowly. If yr point is that the only thing that can make someone lose more slowly is to get consistently better prices, then I agree w/ you. Other than just to note that failures of self-control are at the bottom of most losers' losses (perhaps everyone's)--although it is the shrewd pricers w/ market-specific expertise currently offering a desperation service to these losers. |
|

Clydebank, a lot of yr detail convinces me (esp. the liquid re the illiquid markets and the avoidance). This raises the question: why haven't bf implemented some sort of targeted transation charge rather than the new pc? Is it in yr view stupid greed, pushed by the City and their share price? Is it b/c of some sort of supplier relationship as I've tentatively suggested, or b/c of some form of relationship w/ sports bodies e.g the BHA, Levy Board who are in principle unsympathetic to winners? My position as a bettor is the same as yours: that sophisticated transation pricing wd be fairer, more liveable and massively superior in PR and reputational terms. |
|
By:
askari I genuinely think they just havent thought of it
|
|
By:
But when they introduced the pc, they said that they had considered making the charge specific to certain styles of play but had turned that poss. down.
My sense is that the new move is concerned to root out winners who do not trade w/ them systematically and at levels of churn they like. A bookie who used bf as a hedging strategy, say, is a more desirable client than a pc payer--and bf wd prefer for him 'thoughtlessly' to get the best market price. |
|
By:
Sorry askari, but believing that losers lose because they are being matched at sharper prices is ridiculous.
A loser player will keep on losing and will do it at the same rate regardless of any PC imposed to 480 guys or 4800 guys. And there is no need to sustain that with deep mathematical analysis. You also said: "Let's accept that there are 480 people who have won over 250k each from bf while adopting some kind of commission minimising strategy. This is some 120 million pounds when the value of the company is 850 million--so they've taken away 7% of the company's equity." Another incredible statement. So the money that the winners have taken ... were property of the "company" (because "they've take away 7% of the company's equity.") It's not the losing players losing money but the company being robbed. Does the company also "own" the houses and flats of the losing players? Just a random thought. |

" This is an amendment to the present pricing structure, focusing on a small number of individuals who have betting and trading patterns that have been getting around the existing premium charge...."
You can almost smell his contempt. " Getting around" indeed...what a sad reflection of the board that runs this company today.....making winning clients feel like criminals. Don`t fret Mr. Morana...there won`t be many even attempting to get around anything in the near future...try explaining THAT to your precious shareholders next year. So when the 1st Premium Charge were anonced the statement were that a lot of people doesn't generate enough commision to the community. OK BUT - there is really people that can succesfully avoid this PC - BUT THEY ARE AVOIDING IT BY GENERATING COMMISION?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!!??!?! YOU ARE TAKING WHAT YOU NEED - THEY GENERATE COMMISION THAT YOU WANTED WHAT DO YOU WANT MORE. NOW IT APPEARS THAT THESE PEOPLE AVOIDING THE PREMIUM CHARGE AND THEY ARE CRIMINALS BECAUSE THEY ARE GENERATING ENOUGH COMMISION TO DO IT. SO WHY WOULD THEY DARE TO AVOID IT - LETS RAISE UP THE PREMIUM CHARGE - THEY WOULD BE FORCED TO THE WALL THAT WAY - ****G CHEATERS! |

What a mo.ron argument indeed. How can someone so narrow minded run a billion Pound company?! What a jerk

That sort of personal slight should really help you and others trying to caryy out any sort of protest movement to the very same person you're insulting. |

Funny Turtle, askari strikes me as being about 1000% smarter than you, me or, in fact, pretty much anyone else on this forum.
Whilst I agree that 7% quote of his was somewhat off the mark, probably just made in haste to get across the point of negative impact low commission users are potentially having on BF, pretty much most of what else he says in his well presented posts is extremely perceptive and well argued. What is it exactly about him that you don't seem to like ? He's not rude or arrogant, he's not conceited, he seems to be a fairly good listener, he's certainly not stupid. What exactly ? So you don't necessarily agree with all that he is saying, then just present your counter-arguments calmly, politely and intelligently. |

Counter-Arguments ....
CFO of BT: "We have noticed that some people are making money using our telephone lines and PBX facilities, whilst others lose money. And because this is a free market, we know that those making money (Coca-Cola for example) is being drained from the non-winning customers (any retail Joe)" "Therefore and in order to protect our losing customers we are going to charge the winning customers a 60% of their profits. Rest assured that the losing customers will start making money immediately" How can it be that BT has not identified that the money made by the loyal paying customers belongs to BT? Of course, running a telephone EXCHANGE entitles BT to a cut of the customer profits: PRESENT, FUTURE AND PAST |

By:
All these discussions and dissecting of the Premium Charge are as always interesting and informative, but by doing so we kind of give it a respectability that it does not merit. This is a scam basically no matter how BF try to dress it up. That may even earn the thread deletion but those that know me in BF towers will know that my support for the company in former years was almost total. I have however criticised many aspects of the site...particularly the flawed decay system with comm which insults and penalises clients for the simple reason of taking a week or two away from the game to lick their wounds....or just have a break.
The PC is immoral on a gambling site. That ANY gambling company can discriminate against certain customers for the sole reason that they profit is scandalous. It is equated in my book to Tesco levying housewives who only buy the 2 for 1 offers thus affecting the profits the company CONSIDERS it should be making. Ridiculous analogy ? Maybe...but I am telling non gambling friends what BF is doing here and they cannot believe it...simply cannot understand why they are doing it, other than for greed. Whether there are solid reasons why winners are unwelcome or not here it is hiding the fact that winners are being discriminated against for availing themselves of what is on offer. All the free bets on offer from the firms including here to hook you in, are for what ? To enable you to take your chance against the house or in here against your fellow punters. Surely the trading people would look down on anyone disguising that with `ah yes but you must not win consistently otherwise we will tax you off our site...` THIS is what should be hitting the national press and what people really should concentrate on, the fundamental disgrace of a gambling platform withdrawing a chance of its customers` right to win. Even the worst shyster moneylender will stick to his terms (until you don`t pay him back!!) here we have have a public company moving the goalposts and with the brassnecked audacity to punish you for what some of us achieved TEN YEARS AGO. Can anybody seriously consider continuing betting with a company that would treat its supposedly respected customers in that fashion ? I guess that 98.3% of you will say yes...and I`ll wager that many of us 1.7% will do too, and that INCLUDES myself if I can`t get my profits elsewhere. The message to BF is simple...you will keep winners if they can`t get on elsewhere, but that doesn`t mean we will become losers. You will get your extra slice of the pie, but we will STILL be taking money out of here. Only a cull of every single punter who wins here will sort that out to an extent...but what damage will THAT do to your already tarnished reputation ? The only good thing I`ve now got to say about BF is that it has kept the forum alive and allow these views to be aired, just a shame nobody from the company is reading...or listening. |
|
By:
Hello Duncan - things have changed since we were invited by Betfair to hammersmith for coffee and sharing of views.
I read with sadness your last post. Soon to be on 60% (62.5% total charges) for winning on average £10 I am afraid it is uneconomical for me to stay here after all this time. 60% is obviously meant has a punishment for winning, and a close the door behind you. So if I don't catch up with you again good luck. |
|
By:
duncan good post
Betfair greedy. Betfair is not taking risks unlike we take. It is totally unacceptable for them to ask 60% of profits. They are providing a platform for punters and should be happy to take commission. I feel like complaining when they asked 20% but now I am just shocked. It is not even worth talking with betfair. They want all winners to leave. They want to do bookmaking like bookies. |
|
By:
I've yet to read a convincing argument as to how this "protects" other customers. what plausible impending scenario is it protecting them from?
the only "crisis" at betfair involves its share price, which is only a problem of it falling from an unrealistic initial valuation. the actual company has no debt, has grown uninterruptedly iirc, is profitable and is sitting on a cash pile of £150m. and this is despite effectively cross-subsidising ill-judged expansion into non-core areas with profits from the exchange. and operating in an inflationary recession which will inevitably limit new recreational money coming into the exchange. they may have decided they can make more money by massively increasing charges on an essentially trapped elite, and that may even be legitimate. but let's not dress it up as a response to some kind of existential threat, because there isn't one. |
|
By:
Hazel...yes that was a different Betfair. The idea of a Betfair User Group was mocked my many of the forum..self interest and worse we were accused of and though some of the criticisms were justified the initial idea was welcomed by management. Mr Andrew Black himself took the time to sit round that table and his enthusiasm was apparent as we dived into our sandwiches and chilled Irn Bru lunch...
Nothing happened of course and now what...9 years on look at what they are getting away with. In no way would that user group have prevented any of the developments that took place but at least when the PC reared it`s head the anger and disgust would have all been packaged and articulated and delivered to them. The forum is probably laughed at nowadays...and I guarantee they don`t read these most relevant threads. They used to.This is what annoys me...they have never had a true GAMBLING man on board. That is not to say they were/are all just suits, but a half an hour with say Cubone would have told them more about this PC idea than anyone else could and I include the amazing guys who even understand the mechanics of it. That is their worst crime..BF is now making it up as they go along and further disasters lie ahead make no mistake....because they truly do not understand this hundreds of years old game. Your example ie a smallish layer trying to knick a few quid is telling. 60% [:o] just think about that figure anyone who reads it. Does anyone think they can beat those maths ?...forget it...it used to be 20% better prices on here...well even if it were still true...just deduct 20 from 60 and that is just a starting point. Hazel they won`t miss us....though I may HAVE to stay for at least the in running (absolutely nothing else).... and that is what they should hang their heads in shame about. No wonder Andrew, Mark, Mick etc fled the ship...they knew what was coming as growth slowed to its present standstill. Best of luck to you Hazel. |

Excellent post viva.
The bullsh1t, complete lies, and blatant propaganda they put out (which is repeated by the plants on here, presumably on the basis that if it gets said enough some will aceept it as fact) almost defy belief, as if they think everyone is stupid. I'm still waiting for the poker sites to come up with that line of reasoning, and for them to take 60k off one of their most successfull players because they win 100k during a month ![]() after all these people are draining money from the site at relatively low cost, they need money for advertising etc etc, and all the other crap that betfair regurgitate. |
|
By:
befair want the lot,and the 40-60percent will deter some, leaving a nice easy road for betfairs own traders, who could not have been very clever, becourse if they had been any good there would be no need for the tax.

By:
saint-pilgrim, let's be clear that I am not defending the new pc. I'm not saying that it's fair for any group of paying or aspirant punters or that it will necessarily work out better for any group of other punters.
I'm trying to get my head around why bf wd introduce something that quite clearly kills the dream and discourages participation from informed people who expect long-term to win. The answer has to be that they don't want this group of players; they want losers and breakeven players, and if they have to have winners, they want bigger entities serving up massive guaranteed liquidity at a much higher ratio of commission and costs to profits. To me the alternative explanations (like they are amazingly greedy or want a bigger cut of pc winners' pie) are much less credible. The remark about the new pc payers having taken 7% of bf's equity away only tried to express the matter from a bf investor's point of view. Let's say that I ran a small pharmaceutical company. We had taken a new drug to stage 3 trial and it had been proved to be useless. The trials had cost 7% of the company's market capitalisation. Ok, I cd accept the costs, but if somebody said, 'let's do the same thing all over again, with the same drug and almost surely the same result' I wd draw the line. I wd say, 'let's not throw good money after bad. Let's get rid of the drug'. As to whether people w/ accurate pricing mechanisms win from losing punters, I'm sure they do. Do bookmakers prefer betting w/ people who bet in every race roughly the same amount or who are extremely selective in the races they bet--or who sometimes dutch in the same race? Why shd the principle be any diff. when we are taking about selective price-takers and offerers as against bookie-style full-bookers? |
|
By:
Askari...you are too busy looking for deeper meanings...who cares what why and where they are doing it...the fact is Betfair are targeting certain clients for no other reason than that they win...something Betfair offers when you sign up (the ability to win).
Please comment on this and would you agree with my description of this as `immoral` and if not why not. |
|
By:
FATH, ty for yr kind words. I am not a better bettor than many on these forums and the effect of reading them is usually to make me think I shd be diverting more of my energies away from betting.
Turtle, as I explained, the 7% was only an attempt at understanding how long-term winners are seen from the perspective of the company. Don't you think y/s that there are discussions in Hammersmith along exactly the same lines e.g. 'these people (over 250k winners) have taken away this much of the value of my shares ... this much off the company'? If yr criticism has to do w/ something about the winners' win being the mechanism for losers losing and thus getting bf their cut, the question has to be whether someone else (the company, a net loser or a player offering bf something more) cd have put up the same bet? Wd the loser still have got matched? This was my point: of course he wd or cd have, and maybe in the future bf are counting on putting up more of this 'liquidity' themselves. |

I am sure that the NYSE is about to introduce a 60% charge on the most successful traders. The NYSE is also an exchange where the players fight with money against each other. Some win and some lose.
Surprisingly, the NYSE has not decided that the money taken by the winners belongs to them, because the service they provide is: "an exchange". And surprisingly the NYSE is not calculating if the money taken by the winners is a % of the exchange equity value. Again surprisingly ... this Bf company provides and exchange where people fight with money against each other. Some win and some lose. But suddenly this Bf company has decided that the money going through the "exchange" service belongs to them. Quite possibly other companies may decide that such an scheme is also applicable. "If people use the buses of my company every morning, the money they make working belongs to me, because without the bus they couldn't make it to the office." That winning punters take money from losing punters will remain true, regardless of the PC. It has nothing to do with "accurate pricing mechanisms". It has to do with "losing". And anyone that loses will lose unless he/she changes his ways. And denying that you are defending the PC ... well ... Maradona also claimed it was the hand of god ... |
|
By:
And if Bf wants to seed the markets, they can freely do it and even jump the queue by having no delay ... but that would be to risky ...
A lot better to simply collect money from the people because it's flowing through the exchange ... |
|
By:
"too risky" ...

Duncan, is it looking for that 'deep' a meaning to wonder why bf have brought in this charge? I am w/ you 100% in thinking they want to drive out a certain style of winner e.g. who pays (say) 25% of profit in comm. and is an expert on a certain sport.
Is it 'immoral'? For me the word is too emotive as there are worse kinds of immorality in the world. I buy fruit at Tesco and don't believe that the growers always get a fair share of the end-price. Is the pc legal? Probably. Is it more immoral than conventional high st books shutting out winners? No. Could it be seen as against the ethos of the site? Yes, I agree w/ you there. The question you are not considering (wh/ you might find too refined) is whether bf want any winners operating on their site of any stripe at all. Let's say that bet 3.65 won w/ bf over some 12-month period. Wd bf mind? |
|
By:
'these people (over 250k winners) have taken away this much of the value of my shares .
Fatuous nonsense... these people (over 250K winners) have enabled this company to even have a company with the ability to go public and enable them to own shares. Comment (if you dare) with your answer to my previous post Askari..thank you. |

What I am finding too refined is your abbreviations...what on earth does "won w/ bf" mean ? |
|
By:
The NYSE is not a good analogy w/ a bookmaker.
W/ a bookie people are investing on the same event in direct competition w/ each other in a negative-sum game (sharply so dependent on the overround and commission). On the stock market, investors have different timescales and there are unlikely to be any definitive 'totting-up' events. They have different risk profiles based on their diff. asset portfolios, so one man's gain is not another man's loss. I do not see what you gain by fulminating against the charge. I'm sincere in saying I think it's as bad a thing as you do in specific terms. Many people who will start paying it on 18 July (they don't include me) have said something about how they will investigate other avenues while perhaps seeking to mitigate it. Perhaps we shd all do that or (better) think of how to win or win more and not railing at an injustice we can't influence. |
|
By:
that they won on betfair over a time period of a year
|
|
By:
clear as mud...are you saying that BF would mind what £3.65 won over a year from those winners or what they won that Betfair could have won instead ?
Too refined indeed...anyone else know what he means ? ![]() |

By:
Askari ...isn't Betfair an Exchange? Since when have they "officially" become a bookmaker?
Because as long as they are not a bookmaker and still claim to be an exchange, the NYSE analogy stands 100% correct. Of course it may be that you have some information that is not public. |
|
By:
Duncan, I am suggesting that the pc change is about freezing out winners who run price-sensitive strategies in favour of players (like bookmakers) using the exchange as a hedging mechanism or who at least offer guaranteeed liquidity (like Betting Promotions) by needing to market-make on every relevant market in order to win.
The new pc is about bf wanting to have 'preferred suppliers'. I cd be wrong but don't see any other rationale for so swingeing a change. |
|
By:
Betting Promotions made a loss in last quarter even before new charges. Havent seen their response to the new pricing if they have given one.
|

By:
@askari 14:00
excellent post. |
|
By:
saint-pilgrim, it's public enough that they want to run an integrated bookmaker-exchange platform for IR sports.
Of course they are a bookmaker. Remember what Mark Davies said about the exchange concept in front of the Gambling Select Committee--that it was a metaphor in the same way as a car manufacturer saying their car gave the smoothest ride was a metaphor. Rather (as he said repeatedly) bf were a 'bookmaker that used technology to manage risk'. And imv this guy had more gamble in him than the present lot--enough to leave when he saw their growth was slowing unless they effectively jettisoned any pretense of actually matching customer bets. |
|
By:
brendan, on Betting Promotions exactly, and they wd have made a quarterly loss b/c suddenly they found themselves in a position of competing with the roughly breakeven pc mitigation strategies of those in line to pay.
In this way the original pc fell foul of the law of unintended consequences. It fouled things up for bf's preferred partner. It wd not surprise me if BP's costs were well over 40% anyway and they were one of the parties clamouring for the change. |
|
By:
But you have two examples of ordinary punters(layers) on this thread alone (Hazel and myself) who don`t do anything other than find lays on a daily basis. If price-sensitive strategies mean not laying 6/4 an even money chance then we own up to having price-sensitive strategies.
If layers did not have them we would not be inconvenienced by the PC that`s for sure. Why am I unwelcome here while bookies are not...bookies who lay a mug on course 7 then bet back at maybe 9 on here...is this more acceptable to you and Betfair ? If I depart and Hazel departs who is laying in our absence ? the bottom line is that some punters bets are going to be left unmatched,is that beneficial to either the bettor or to Betfair ? That management can`t see that is indicative of their crass stupidity. |
