Well how about just doing what you do and increase stakes a bit ?!?!
Report The Investor April 8, 2011 12:38 AM BST
Year    Avg Daily Net Profit
2006    £1.21
2007    £8.90
2008    £36.05
2009    £134.81
2010    £165.45

The main growth was at the end of 2008, when I went from making £100-200 a month to about £2-3k, and improving at a slower rate after that.

What did you change at that point Investor, your bets or your staking?
Report 1.01 Layer April 8, 2011 9:26 AM BST
Similar experience to the Investor for me. It took 3 years of growth before I could give up the day job.

A profit's a profit. I always had 10% per bet in mind and just kept upping the stakes. As my perception of value improved, so did the 10% figure.

Each to their own though and if you haven't got the patience (or need the steady income of a real job), it's probably best you just keep it as a hobby.  GL.

perhaps being a sunderland fan explains why you lose lol but in all seriousness just have some fun, one of the problems with live betting and espescially trading is you tend to spend a lot of time on betting sites.

Ive done same thing last 2 years and now wanting to spend less time and money on betting, just not worth it no more, other things in life,

i know how you feel when you consider the time spent to get nowhere, happens to me too , hence the new attatude im taking.
Report The Investor April 8, 2011 2:43 PM BST
Tobermory, two big changes, one was that after a long period of tiny (but extremely consistent) profits I decided to scale up. I also came to realize how low risk it was, it took me a while, because like most people, I considered gambling to be an extremely risky way of making money.

The second factor was that I saw the potential to make a lot of money, and massively increased my activity. In 2006 and 2007 I spent an average of about 20 minutes a day on Betfair. If I spent more time, I could use a larger bank, and increase my return at the same time, which is exactly what I did. In 2008 and 2009 I increased my hours spent trading. Now I do about 40 hours a week. (20 in the weekend, 20 during the week). Although it's now quite a bit more than that, as I frequently look at late night matches, after I've 'finished' trading for the day.
Report askari1 April 8, 2011 3:37 PM BST
sunderlandfan, it wd not surprise me if big winners like The Investor followed very similar strategies to you.

You need also to consider how much money you're using to make your ten pounds per day, your variance, how much stress you put y/s under, how much you enjoy betting and how much you cd be making doing something else.

The last question is really extrinsic to betting. There will be good winners on here who shd really be doing something else and moderate winners who shd try to get better on here.

Good luck

Investor do you trade inplay or prematch (or both)?
Report screaming from beneaththewaves April 8, 2011 6:04 PM BST
I sympathize with sunderlandfan.

He says it's the time and effort needed to get a tenner a day which frustrates him, so there's no point recommending he approaches it as a hobby.

And if he ups his stakes, he'll more often than not get matched at worse prices for his additional stakes. So the tenner profit turns into a tenner loss.
Report Alex the old wrinkled retainer April 8, 2011 6:29 PM BST
This is one of the few sensible threads that appear.

I would ask sunderlandfan why he simply does not scale up.  Difficult to do, I accpet but Investors anecdote indicates that it works.

I also note screaming from beneaththewaves comments.  In some cases he is right, however I think(?) I detect hobbyists being sensible from increased liquidity from about 5.30 on a Friday and I don't think that it necessarily follows that by approaching betfair as a hobby means reversion to mugpunterism.

There are too many folk out there who want to make too much too quickly . You need to put in the time to start with ,sometimes making pennies ,sometimes losing to see the way ahead ....no good giving up after a few weeks .

Maybe if you're worried about wasting the spring and summer sunshine by staying on here then  start in October ,then give it your best shot ,study and study some more .

That's a good point Coach, sunshine's not often mentioned on here. I think your surroundings are really important, if I was stuck in a room without a view all day every day there's no way I could do this, it's a lonely enough job as it is without staring at four walls.

I'm very lucky in that respect as I work from a seafront flat that has a 14 feet bay window with glass from floor to ceiling front and sides, over looking the beach and watching the tide roll in and out every day (2nd highest rise and fall of tide in the world) fantastic sunsets too, and a pub next door for the end of the day :)

grecko is correct. i have only been doing this for around 6 months. at the start i was putting big amounts(for me) on games. assuming my love and knowledge of football would see me through. couple of losses sorted that out. since then i have lowered stakes and am looking for consistency. so far so good. theres nothing wrong with making nice steady progress. i only wish i had this attitude at the start and didnt dive in. but have to learn somehow. Its funny how people always assume that everyone who makes a killing with sepculation has to appear in some freakish Newsshow on TV sooner or later,.... obviously those tards fell victim to the modern day Propaganda Doctrine "if its on TV its true,... no matter what and if its not it didnt happen" :).

Just a little example: Isai Scheinberg owner of Pokerscams (ehrm Stars) i mean, is rich beyond belief and nobody even knows him :).... Not on TV,.. not in any Magazine,... not listed in any top 10 Richest people of the Universe list. Just Nothing.
Report woolythetipster April 18, 2011 9:56 PM BST
as a fellow sunderland fan i had to reply.

I think looking at your returns in terms of actual £'s is where a lot of people go wrong, its all about %'s. If you make 10% of your bank each day and start of with £100, theoretically you will be a millionaire in 97 days. So starting tomorrow you would be a millionaire by 25th July this year.

Practically it wont happen becasue your amounts wont get matched and you would be mad to stake the amounts required to do this in such a short time.

However turn £100 into £1000 by 14th may, then upto 10,000 by the 7 June ........... you could sstick at winning £1000 a day and banking all profits as your bank rises above the 10k mark.

Stick to this theory, be patient and stake %'s to win %'s. Its the only way to win long term.
Report Anna1943. April 18, 2011 10:15 PM BST
The Above Posting sums it up pretty much,.... you need roundabout a 5 % Edge on whatever you do,... a Spartan approach to discipline,... enough Betting Opportunietis to Turnover some Volume throughout the Season and a reasonable not necesarrily very big ammount of Money to get you started......

Why we all arent Millionaires by now you might ask,.. hmm,.... good Question :)
Report Ron Pillock April 19, 2011 6:50 PM BST
For the people who think that £10 a day would satisfy them.......I could show you a way to average £10 a day on Betfair but it would take effort for about 4 hours a day and its not scalable because of the lack of liquidity. Believe me the novelty of working for £2.50 an hour soon wears off.

Great thread. I was fluting around for a while before i finally settled on a strategy on here, laying away teams in footy match markets is my betting thing now. But it took a lot of ups and downs before i developed my system, discipline and proper staking system. Now it works well for me but it took a while for the penny to drop. Being a big fan of world football also a big help. For those doubting themselves, if you have the above attributes give it a go, start with small stakes and build it up, above all have patience and discipline and know your sport. Good luck.
