if i have a column with a ranking formula, and then want a second column assigning a value to the ranking, how do i get excel to read the ranking result, rather than the formula????

Normally you would use INDEX and the Match functions
It depends if you want to assign a fixed value or a relative cell value to each rank number starting from 1 to whatever.
If you tell me what cell your rank function starts and finishes in and what values you wish to enter next
to rank 1, rank 2 etc... and where those values are located I can probably help with a formula.

it should already be reading the value. but you could try using somtheing along the lines of =a1+0 to ensure conversion to number.
