Very simple to end each betting year in profit, even it's only £1, because that's better than a loss of £1000, £2000 or whatever other sums you may speculate with.

To ensure you end up in a plus and not a minus, do the following:

NEVER bet on horseracing ever again, not even 50p
NEVER bet on dogracing ever again, not even 50p

If you want to know WHY, go to your profit and loss statement for the past year or 2 years which Betfair will send you, there you will find the simple answer.

NEVER bet on sports where the form is widely known particularly by bookmakers, because you'll never then find value often enough to make it pay.

Bookmakers' odds compilers spend the most time on sports that generate the most turnover. In otherwards they've had major league football and horse racing stitched up for decades.

Find a sport or League bookmakers have less knowledge about. Then you will occasionally find value.
I would recommend betting on RUGBY outright match odds only, forget about handicaps. Yes you will need the patience of a saint and prices will be short but the cash will add up over a year.

I also recommend betting on SPEEDWAY and UK ICE HOCKEY. Bookmakers are not interested in these. By recommend I mean do some proper research and form analysis and you will find decent value bets.

Nobody can guarantee profits but if you do all of the above, you will be thousands better off over a few years, even if the biggest reason for that is that you're not pouring cash down the drain on horseracing and dogracing.

Also sorry to be boring, but once your bet is in a good position, always trade out and cover your stake at least.

Oh and one final word, never ever put a single coin in the bookies roulette machines. These are fixed. If you don't believe they're fixed, go to a real casino and count the number of times your luck on a spin could be described as atrociously unbelievable, then compare it to the bookies machines. Laughable to be honest, but keep your stakes low when doin the tests :-).

Thank you and please let me know how much cash you've saved in 3 months time and by all means send me a cheque in the post :-).

Very smooth Mr Smooth.
Unfortunately there may be a few exceptions around to your general rules and advice, and they may well turn up soon and ripyour smooth post all apart.
But then maybe they won't.
They're an unpredictable bunch of geniuses at best.

Another of the brigade that thinks if I can not win at such and such no one else can.

I can only comment on horse racing, for me that area of betting has been profitable for
more than 20 years. Prior to that I had good and bad years mostly bad that probably spanned
10 years. I had the opinion even in those dark years that there must be a way and there was.

Just took me a long time to realize what my problems were.
A lot of self analysis, research, perseverance and discovering how to calculate the likely chances
led me to the value revolution. This was the major transformation from losing to winning.

To echo what has has been said many times ~ "You can only win if the odds are in your favour"

Why do bookies need to fix a game that's already on their side?

Don't believe in trading out... just ruins any value you had. Making small stakes until the inevitable big loss, kind of like spread betting.

well some of what you say makes a lot of sense and makes an interesting read, but I would like to make one point, If mainstream sports betting compliers have anything stitched up its old odds compiling strategy which can be there undoing, because if you know how they arrive at there prices then you know that its only a general perception of chance or prediction that they use and for that reason it is rigid and cast so can be beaten if you see what they so easily miss in there blinkered approach.

to say that form compilers have it stitched up is to say that every favorite should be backed as thats the odds compilers top rated when favorites them selves at the same price come in a vast array of form flavors against a  universe of field form strengths, there overall system may make bookie tills burst but on an exchange with higher odds using better runner and race form identification a profit can be had and had in style! thats as much information as I feel happy to share

Dog racing is an art form, the most consistent animal on this planet with no dwarves manipulating them and no fast pic thieves, its you against the market, that the OP failed in this field is nothing to be ashamed of.
Report bf_fananatic July 27, 2011 1:35 AM BST
patrick starr, you share my love of dog racing, its simply the best and the most underrated athletic animal on the planet doesn't get the admiration, press support and television coverage that it deserves.

perhaps one fine day when punters can see these magnificent movers in action when they place a bet on the INTERNET then there sheer entertainment value, speed and desire to win can be shared!

how sis and the bookmakers bagged and monopolized the rights to do this just to show them in bookie sweat shops only is a disgrace to the sport!

getting teary eyed about greyhounds oh dear, if greyhounds were replaced by labradors or stoats, after 5 years people would be wax lyricalling about those - they are just a means to an end, that end being betting.

put it in over 500 metres against a cheetah if you want to see a better, more athletic animal
