Was just considering a post on this. Is it just me or it now sometimes gives wierd errors, drops the connection, and (about to keep a closer eye on it) seems to sometimes be showing old prices?

I've had that before on the web interface where it would flip back and forth from current to old or have a consistant delay of a number of minutes from live. Oddly enough often mostly on italian football (do they have servers that cache by market and italy is on the old crap server?! :)) Interesting to see it caused by a maintenance thing.
It's slighly worrying to know I've a bet on odds X and the market isn't showing that money there. I won't panic until 6:01 pm though :)

I cancelled some bets in a market at 1:50pm and they were still flashing up every so often at 5pm.
Close your positions and sit tight. Oxygen will be provided.

The footy c/s markets are hilarious, I've never seen the API this mental before.
Do the experts know what they're doing? It doesn't inspire confidence does it, a bit like getting your car back after an expensive service to find grease all over the seats and the oil filter cross threaded and pissing out oil.
Perhaps I'm being too harsh, but the API was fine before the maintenance.

when the website came up at about 12-ish i was watching (via my API app) a horserace favorite bouncing regularly once-per-sec between 2.00 and 2.5 ... thought all my christmases had come at once ... they hadn't

Firefox is fine here, but it wasn't, until i, yes you guessed, cleared my cache ... seriously, it's the most likely cause of any browser problems when there's been a change to the website.

Yea I'm thinking I'll get out now .. call this an off day probably. I don't know if the money or odds I'm looking at even exist, I've web interface showing one thing and API another, you can't make decisions on that.

Firefox is working here Alex. I had wierd problem initially coming onto forum and the odd thing like the market data now loading but it works, even if I don't trust the data I'm seeing.

The french game (le havre) has been kicked off for about 7-8 minutes, yet API is showing the PRE kick off market prices - and they're updating. Just a heads up as to what you might be risking if you're using it at the moment, let's see what 9pm brings.

API still showing pre kick off prices, 20+ minutes out of date.
If I hadn't seen that service.info link, I wouldn't have known, they should've stuck the fact API was down in the service announcement on the forum, and I don't think they did?

What will be happening is the program you use to acces the API will not be receiving the normal response message as the cache is old, so your bet screen hangs. But on the live server it should have been placed

Well I've got £10 stuck somewhere in the ether. No idea where but 'Current Exposure' says -10.05 so I should take that as correct ?
Just glad I never put more down or I'd be worried now.

Le havre still showing pre kick off odds, 36 mins in and it's not 0-0. Could get very nasty for bots?
Betfair should really have sent emails out about this, not everyone reads the forums.
I certainly didn't get one, did anyone?

Yea I know modk, but if you didn't hang about on forums or regularly check service page, and use API products, right about now you'd be kind of screwed. They should really have emailed everyone about downtime to at least give a hint that things might be funny today.

Did you trev? I searched my inbox for emails from betfair before posting to check and there was absolutely nothing about this.
Was it from betfair or some wierd address?

If you look on "my profile", under contact details it has "Keep me informed of Betfair's special offers and promotions" Is that Yes or No for you guys.
I had "No". I NEVER seem to get emails about downtime, I wonder if it's related.

"an API that gives out wrong information is much worse than none at all!" Yes, exactly. Because I'd read on forum about downtime, I knew to be warey today but because web site looked fine I thought API would be fine. When it became obvious something was up, I cancelled a lot and watched rest carefully in web browser but .. it's not good.
It would have been very easy for things to go badly wrong, for sure.

sure very wrong! Luckily I'm out now but things could have been very bad if I had been running a little more automated. Originally helpdesk did not acknowledge there was an issue with the API. I have called them again to seek reassurance in this matter which could have been very damaging to all concerned - not least my own confidence in the Betfair service. Betfair couldn't have left the API in a worse condition than half-cocked!

ykick, betfair API isn't all about bots, it's the method ANY of the applications that work with Betfair use to work. Secondly, that's also complete b0llocks about the "whenever logging on" thing, when I log onto the website I don't go to betfair THEN to the sport of choice, why would I? I go STRAIGHT to the sport like sport.betfair.com and that way, you didn't get a message. The only reason I knew about this was because of the forum. Thirdly, and most importantly, the website came up and was fine and the API was allowing people to use it, when it was plainly screwed.
So what precisely, was your point, given what you just posted was easily and comprehensively torn apart?

API is betfair for the big boys. You can bet and you can do it with bells and whistles.
It works out the maffs quicker than you can.

a bot would generally use the API to monitor markets and place lays/bets. the API is a gateway if you like where the computers can 'talk' without using a web browser.

Using something like Gruss or GeeksToy connected through the API allows you to have many events open at once, and monitor all the events and your positions in them at the click of a mouse instantly. Prices auto update at your desired refresh rate. If you haven't watched an in-play horse race via the API you haven't lived :)

Templeton the API is the system used by the applications like betfair rapid and geeks toy and bet angel and all those things people sometimes talk about.
You don't need them of course. The API is basically like a big computer jack socket that the applications plug into, it's a side route into betfair that works in parallel with the web interface, to do the same things.

Thanks. I have seen vids of these things on Youtube so have a vague idea of what they look like/how they work.
Something tells me that in a few months time I'll be thinking to myself "how on earth did I try and manually do all of this"...

Frog, I know it sounds weird but watching the speed of the price changes and the money being matched is quite eye opening on a 0.3 second refresh in-play nag race. Mad as hatters.
The API is just a convenient way to have speedy access to any market and load up several markets at once, monitor them at a click of the mouse or even have them all (different events) on the same screen refreshing every 0.5 secs. Days like today are very rare, and you can tell instantly when there's a problem once you've used it a couple of times. There's no more risk than using the website.
Give it a go Frog, you'll be suprised, I recommend Gruss at £6 per month.

Jidging from current prices generally across the board on tonight's football games, the API must still be dodgy, as it would seem that many of the major market makers have not fully re-entered all side markets in particular.

Trevh I honestly don't need all these bells and whistles betting the way I do in the markets I do. Positional betting only. Bets usually placed well in advance of the off. No changes in mid stream. But I understand and accept that for many that the API has opened new vistas in betting opportunities.

Still totally unworkable.. Have had to shut down completely.. Programs now bet continuously until the off instead of once! Nightmare.. Could have lost my whole bank(s) if I hadn't spotted it.. Must have screwed up a return code or something..?

I put it on at 11.50 yesterday and it gave wrong information causing me to place multiple bets as well. Managed to just about close the trade manually so didnt coast me much. Turned everything off since.

http://service.betfair.info/ have taken api off the list of things not working.
I wish they would either confirms it all works properly or switch it off.

All prices look reasonably sane to me now on the football mkts. Manual inspection only. But the usual mkt. makers appear to be back. So I assume the API must thus be OK.

I have not got a clue regarding the API - my website is usually very stable until Betfair starts wobbling. If I wait long enough the fault is rectified at Betfair's end - usually.

Yesterday API certainly seemed to give errors BUT the bets were taking, so, if whatever you use assumes an error means need to try the same bet again without checking what bets are now there, then you could foresee how that could go wrong.
