Lookin for help in buying a new desktop as mine is 5 years old,v slow and always crashing.
Basically all I use my computer for is the internet and running the geeks toy trading application.
Im looking for something that is quick and reliable. I normally have the geeks toy running along with multiple websites open but find this makes the computer run v slow and suspect to crashing (not a good combo if this happens in the middle of a trade/bet).
Was thinking of something like DELL Inspiron 580 with Intel Core i3 processor (£380) but iv really no idea if this is suitable.
Any help appreciated, thanks
P.S. At present I have a DELL Dimension 3100 with Intel Pentium 4 processor.

First off, I'm no computer geek, so although I think your choice would be ok, bear that in mind.
My very old Dimension Dell desktop is apparently on its last legs too. Used it for the same kind of things you used without problem for years. I was originally looking at a new Dell desktop along with an extra monitor but ended up getting a Dell Studio 1745 laptop from Dell Outlet - http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/dfo/df.aspx?refid=df&s=dfo - for £390. The Studio laptops are meant to be a desktop replacement. The one i ordered has a scratch but a mate got one from Dell Outlet and he couldn't find the scratch on his. I'll just hook it up to my 22" monitor and I'll have the two monitors I'm after.

that processor should be fine. imo to keep your pc running as you would want for your needs make sure it has plenty of RAM, don't install any additional unnecessary stuff (toolbars, search helpers etc) and regularly run anti-spyware progs (adaware, spybot etc)
obviously a fast reliable internet connection is also a key component but there isn't always a lot you can do to improve that
if you can afford it you'd probably benefit from a twin monitor setup as well, once you've got it you'll wonder how you managed before with just one :)

Just a few thoughts for what it's worth.
I also use Geek's Toy (Nice bit of software!) and that is on a PC I built myself. I'm not a great lover of commercially built PCs, because most of the companies, Dell, HP, etc. tend to fill them up with rubbish software (bloatware) and often use cheap parts in the build. If you know anyone locally who can put one together for you, you might be more pleased with the results, although it's unlikely to work out cheaper, but would be better quality.
Anyway, as already stated, you need plenty of RAM in the machine (4gb as a MINIMUM) and to get full benefit, you want the 64bit version of Windows 7. (Professional is better than Home Premium) You don't need a super-fast graphics card. You might think the Geek's Toy is fast moving, but it's not like trying to play a modern computer game. However, if you are going to use 2 monitors, you need something that can support this, with 2 DVI outputs.
The processor is of course the brains of the machine. Again, you don't really need the very newest quickest one (which will be priced accordingly) but I'd go for a quad core. That will keep everything running quickly and no bottlenecks. Good luck with what you finally choose and hope it gives you a profitable set-up. If you find a computer that also helps control
your discipline while trading, then let me know!

If it's 32bit windows, > 3Gb doesn't help, that's why some manu's ship with that, so don't let it put you off if 32 bit windows is what you'll use.
