( though not necessarily useful in any manner I can readily ascertain) to know the age breakdown of the bettors in the various sports on here.
Would it raise too many howls of protest if I suggested that perhaps sports such as football, tennis etc attract the more modern, younger type punters, whilst horse racing the converse ?
Despite my saying that I'm not readily aware of any use this knowledge might have, could it perhaps translate in any manner into relatively predictable, exploitable betting styles ?

And to pre-empt the usual replies from the usual suspects, fishing is not my preferred sport.
OK ? Not looking for any secrets, just looking for generalised thoughts on the subject.

It would be interesting I agree, but I can't think of any use it would have either.

I'm a serious football punter, with a bit of tennis and snooker for fun, and occasionaly try something different in the horse markets for minimum stakes, and my age... have a guess lol.

I would be on a hiding to nothing in trying to guess anyone's age on here.

btw how old are you FAFH ???
By:

The best I could guess about you trevh is that you sound young and eager to learn. OK ?
Me ? I would suppose I sound either old and cynical or young and naive ?

Btw I only bet on football not because of my age, but because it is essentially the only sport that I feel is not fixed to any material degree.
I do not trust individual type sports at all, and HR seems to me to be widely regarded as being at worst fixed, or at best very much an inside knowledge type betting scenario.
But having said that, I do acknowledge that certain people have some very honest, superior betting skills in all these sports I don't favour.

Old enough to take you on eh ?
Just joking as per usual.

Take Zipper on here.
He's admitted to being almost 66 and seems to bet pretty much entirely on HR.
Is he typical of that age group ?
Probably not, as there is no real logical reason why it should be so.
The more interesting point would perhaps how many young people these days do all the hard work and study to get the deep knowledge needed to bet on the horses ?.
By:

I'm 43, but young and eager to learn will do fine. I had Lusti down as 35-45 and a sensible experienced punter, and Frog as perhaps 50's and cynical yes, but that's a good thing.

Frog, you mention Zipper, he/she is a strange character, I don't know where you get 65 from but s/he has also claimed to be an octogenarian, and a couple of years ago seriously claimed to actually be a women, and went into some detail about her reasons for pretending to be a man on the forum (sounds bizzare I know). So now I don't know what to make of him/her, but each to their own.

I must admit that was all news to me the stuff about Zipper.
He/she certainly walks to the beat of a different drummer.
Very amusing though.

A gentleman or a lady never reveals his age.
So I hear you saying, what has that got to do with me. Right ?
By:
FINE AS FROG HAIR
When: 04 Nov 10 02:23
Btw I choose not to reveal it, because as I said in the thread intro I actually believe it is of no real value for anyone to know anyone else's age on here, unless perhaps some paricular remark is prefaced by a phrase such as ' In all my years of experience in such and such ---- ".
I will admit to however not acting my age many times, especially on here.
By:
FINE AS FROG HAIR

Btw if you can't tell the age of someone from his posting style, then you could quite rightly ask how could you expect it to tell you anything at all about his/her betting style.
End of I suppose.

i dont care very much how old someone is, even more here in the forum but i must admit that i dont have a lot of patience for the younger guys and their usual arrogance (i guess i was like them also at the age)

maybe it has something to do with my army background since i was there for a few years

but hopefuly in betting terms aging is a good thing until some point in time, for instance, in poker tournaments you see that the younger guys have an edge just because of that natural arrogance/aggressiveness that really helps in terms of how the game is played (here because the primary objective is to avoid going broke on the long run you need a different mind set)

Froggie, Just FYI from my pc statement

Last Week25/10/10 - 31/10/10
Gross PL    £    1,125.96

Never touch the geegees unless I have a clear advantage. Made a tidy profit on the Melbourne cup even though it could have been a race between 3 legged donkeys for all I know or care.

It's possible to make an educated guess of age
based on two things IMO. The forum name and to
a greater degree, the use of bad language.

Frog - My local bookies i find myself as one of the youngest every time i go in, im 44. Even FOBT players are older there.
Maybe the youngsters have more sense. My lads more into poker.

Yep you're very controlled K in that area.
I thought perhaps you were just the religious type.
Let's face it, you think you're God on here.
Please, please take that as the joke ( bad perhaps) that it's meant to be.

Yep I was actually really thinking more about whether younger punters are as much into HR as older punters.
Will they put the required hoours in to learn in depth about all the intricacies of that particular sport.
Other sports are relatively simple in that respect.
Not that they don't require study etc, but to basically understand are far simpler.
By:
Lusitano71
When: 04 Nov 10 21:45
if younger punters dont eventually bet on horse racing even if they started on football betting it would really amaze me, horse racing has...lots of races, every 5 minutes or so, the outcome is ultra fast comparing to football and even more to tennis, seems quite simple, all you need is to look at recent form Laugh (although we all know that it isnt), you have multiple outcomes possibilties instead of 3 in football match odds (W,D,L)and two in tennis (player A vs player B), its ultra exciting to watch... of course all this on an entrie level

i think everything about horse racing should appeal to the younger punters

but there are a lot of things about horse racing that are really badly done like the rankings, the never ending variations of race types and distances, the ten thousand names the same type of races have, etc etc

thats what in the end makes the sport really difficult to grasp

Some good points there Lusi.
I grew up in a family environment where no HR punting, or in fact no punting at all, was done.
Hence I only came into betting via my personal grown up interests, and that was not HR.
I think a lot of people, certainly in the past, were introduced to HR punting by the fact that it really used to be the only thing one's father could bet on, if he was a betting man.

exactly like me FAFH, im one of a kind in my family Devil

my journey to get here started in the stock exchanges where i got introduced to all this world of investing/speculating, i soon realized that i needed huge amounts of money to make it work unless i was willing to trade on margins which i wasnt, never felt confortable risking anything that wasnt mine to begin with, then i had a couple of years where i played poker from sunrise to sunset or better from sunset to sunrise Laugh, i played mostly poker tournaments and although i didnt do bad i also didnt do as much as i wanted and playing tournaments that lasted 5 or more hours with small breaks was beginning to take a toll on me and then i also started to doubt the fairness/cheating of the poker sites which lead me to lose confidence and pleasure in what i was doing, mainly because when i played in live tournaments everything felt, again, right
i still play but just for fun and with no big objectives in mind
poker sites got me naturally in contact with betting sites and the rest is history Happy
