say a horse is 25/1...average midweek race...will £100 change odds?
known some of the jokers, they'll prob give 50 @ sp & rest at 25/1
I often read of horses being backed in at long odds & often interested to what type of money it takes to do it..

Bookies for the most part just copy Betfair, so its more a question of how much money it takes to shorten a horse on here.  I'm sure they'll take a stack on it if it is a 99/1 shot on here but next to nowt if its is 24/1 on here.

In reality they wont take a stack in the former instance since not many people are that stoopid

About 12 months ago asked for 200 e/w with Hills on a 33/1 shot - offered 25 win then they cut to 20/1 (Betfair price at time was 40s but early morning so little in market).
Went to Ladbrokes round corner manager must have thought he owned the company said "I know you've just been at Hills well you're not having a price with me because the 33/1 is for recreational punters only".He then completely refused to give me anything better than SP, but miraculously odds shortened to 18/1 within 5 minutes and there was only us putting on!

"Recreational punters". Boy. How bookies love that phrase.

Yes your £200 e/w caused them to shorten it to 18/1 Laugh

you need to put it into context of the race type. If its a maiden, if you are counting that as an average midweek race? Or are we talking a handicap? would make a decent difference. Are they a standout price? is it generally 25s?

I had £5 on the Mercury Music Prize with Hills and they cut the odds from 9-1 to 6-1.
Makes you wonder if they're odds compilers are volunteers.Cry

what i suspected with hills & lads.
treble_undersore:wasnt talking about any races in particular but I like to bet on beginner / novice chases, seems to be a bit of value in some of the outsiders

u just got to wonder how much they got on!

Am I BLUE landed a hefty gamble when running away with the Wyvern Ices Handicap Hurdle at Hereford yesterday.

The four-year-old had failed to score on any of her previous 16 starts and had been beaten 88 lengths when last of 12 on her latest appearance at Worcester.

But having been available at 25-1 in the opening shows yesterday morning, the Delyth Thomas-trained filly was backed at all rates down to just 5-1 before the off.
