Does anybody have any experience of sports tipping services currently operating in the UK ? Are any of them any good ? Is it really worth paying for their services ? Obviously, some people do pay as these things wouldn't exist but I've never tried them on account of being too mean to spend my money, but I think I might change my mind if any of them was worth it.

never paid for one myself; if you do decide to go for one make sure they show all their bets on their website and get audited by an independent accountant

In the absence of any replies which recommend any tipping services, it has to be reasonably safe to assume that they are all probably worthless.

Don't go for any that don't have 1000+ tips, independently audited. That rules out pretty much all, of course.

Final results - a month of profits at South Africa 2010

After 64 games and 101 recommended bets - the World Cup Profit
Service comes to an end. And if you followed all our advice
throughout the tournament, you'll be well in profit today.

I recommended 9 bets before the tournament began covering the top
scorer markets. And I sent you a match-day email covering every
single game of the World Cup (25 emails in total), using the team
stats to cash-in on Match Results, Goals, Corners, Yellow Cards and
Booking Points bets. Here's a summary of our overall results...

World Cup Profit Service 2010:

101 recommended bets
62 winning bets
37 losing bets
2 bets void
Strike rate = 62%

If you followed every recommended bet (to the same stakes and the
best odds quoted), you'd have made 15.46 times your stakes...

That's £154.60 profit from £10 stakes...
£386.50 profit from £25 stakes...
Or £773.00 profit from £50 stakes...

Priceform's team of writers made 117.73 pts profit with 2 results to come using their 0-5pts staking plan

Sample size of 100 = totally meaningless. You could be rolling dice to pick.

I would imagine these tipsters are ok for those who
don't have a feel for betting, and stick strictly to
the recommended bets, exact staking etc.
Report baconONtoast • July 12, 2010 9:03 PM BST
Yes, sites like that are what I was referring to - although only one actually has a good record there with sufficient tips......
Report itfc • July 12, 2010 9:46 PM BST
What do you consider a good record and sufficent number of tips?

For straight betting anything over 10% ROI over the long term is good
Report itfc • July 12, 2010 9:47 PM BST
From probably 1000 bets

so in my eyes 2 match the criteria with another 3 looking promising
Report baconONtoast • July 12, 2010 9:57 PM BST
Minimum 1000 tips.

The problem with straight RoI is that it's easy to keep it high by only taking best bets, and thus missing potential profit at narrower edges - given liquidity and stake limits this matters quite a lot to those trying to make an income on a lot of sports (not so much football where it's possible to get thousands on just about anything, but certainly most other sports). The top guy on sports-tipsters only has 2.3%, but produces an absolute avalanche of bets.

I can produce about 12% on tennis pre-match, but can't find anywhere near as many bets to make, and stake limits bite hard in practice. Thus my stats look miles better than that 2.3%, but in practice don't make anywhere near as much profit.

Longterm, I suspect ideal profitability will come from systematically beating spreads on football for 2% or so, because of the absolutely gigantic number of matches on offer globally, and the high stakes you can get on (here, pinnacle, sbobet and ibcbet).
Report dukeofpuke • July 13, 2010 12:28 AM BST
not having a go at you with your 1000 bets criteria

but as the site i have used for this years world cup picked 101 bets

that would take 10 world cups to work it out whether its a long term profit

so i would be sure then to have a bet on the 2046 world cup thats if bets kept on in profit

i will be 84 by then and probably well gone

what you dont seem to understand is that the site is making a profit out of short term trends

i.e. it picked up that holland were getting the most booking points thats because of they way they are playing NOW not in the last world cup
in the next world cup they may have  the least booking points

england were winning the most corners they even beat the germans etc etc

it picks up on short term trends depeending on recent results and goes with those

and guess what it works
Report baconONtoast • July 13, 2010 12:45 AM BST
Sure, it yielded profit. However, what you don't know is whether this indicates an underlying edge, or it's just variance, or whether their method just aligned with a weakness in betting markets (ie they were accidentally betting value, quite common imo). What happens next time you take their tips, and it turns out there was no edge after all?

I definitey agree with your point about the difficulties large sample sizes cause though - it's a major problem with any setup that doesn't produce bets at high volume. By the time you can be confident you have an edge, things have changed, or (more annoyingly) the market has lessened that edge. In many sports there's a need to constantly refine technique and research methods, but without sufficient sample it's very hard to see how successful those changes are.
Report dukeofpuke • July 13, 2010 1:13 AM BST
i wonder how many punters (kenilworth included)(is he a punter or a forum complainer)

would of backed holland most bookings against spain in the final

or england most corners v germany also v usa

or france most corners v uruguay

australia most bookings v germany

etc etc

the site did a good job on their picks and were actually down for me after 33 bets -£101.78

but then picked 11 from 12 to be £814.21 up
Report kenilworth • July 13, 2010 8:02 AM BST
duke of puke, I don't know why you are having a swipe at me
but never mind. For what it's worth I bet prices, NOT picks.
All of your examples could have been backed or laid depending
on prices. Is there any other way ?
