Would like to add a couple of extra columns, one to count the number of qualifiers per race (as there are sometimes multiple qualifiers ) and another column to count the number of qualifiers per day.  The spreadsheet is set up as shown below.  Any advice appreciated.  Thanks.

try using the grouping/subtotal utility and use the count option for the qualifier column?

If you are using Excel 2007 you could use the COUNTIFS function.

=COUNTIFS(A$2:A$9,A$2,B$2:B$9,B$2,C$2:C$9,C$2,D$2:D$9,"*")

The "*" asterisk at the last condition will establish if the cell is empty or has text.

First answer count the Qualifiers in a certain race ~
=SUMPRODUCT((A$2:A$50=A2)*(B$2:B$50=B2)*(C$2:C$50=C2))

Second answer count qualifiers for day ~
=COUNTIF(B$2:B$50,B2)

You have to put those formula in 2 columns and
fill down. If you go past row 50 change 50's in the
formula to 100 or 1,000 whatever the case may be.
