In my experience Betfair is a very fair and reasonable company and would not in practice hold the customer liable for any losses caused by fraud or negligence of its employees. In any case I think the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 would protect the customer.
It is hardly surprising the thread has been removed. If Betfair believed that the fraud could have been perpetrated by an employee, it would no doubt have reported the matter to the police and would not want any comment to prejudice a prosecution. On the other hand if it believed that the implication was without foundation, it would quite rightly remove the thread. So I don't think you can draw any conclusion about the matter from the removal of the thread.

GB - that's fair enough, as long as that is what would actually happen, and money would be properly refunded in any case of fraud.

I have read on here however cases where this was refused and blame was placed on the customer, despite the same customer claiming they had done nothing other than have their account compromised.

There are a few risks you need to consider beside the obvious ones when betting/trading. The topic highlighted in this thread is the most important of these.

There are other though. For instance, I spoke to Betfair regarding settlement of bets in abandoned games. Imagine that you have layed over 1.5 goals for a large liability and covered this by backing 2 goals or more in total goals. This is an almost perfect hedge. I say almost, because it's possible that two goals get scored and the match gets abandoned. Your lay of over 1.5 goals has lost you a lot of money, and your back of 2 goals or more is voided. Betfair have told me that there is no set procedure in such a case, and you may or may not be refunded.

This may seem trivial as it's so rare, but imagine putting a huge amount of money on, thinking you have hedged and there is zero risk. It only needs to go wrong once, and if you spend many years on Betfair, it may happen at some stage.

Security has always been a concern for me.  What's the deal with card deposits currently, there was a point where you didn't even have to enter your security digits correctly to deposit.  And what happened to the feature disabling access from certain countries, is that still in force even though you can't manually select it any more?

I was recently hacked and my bank was gambled away in manic style by the hacker. Cant say too much as its being investigated by police but Betfair have taken the stance that its all my problem. Do not leave any funds with Betfair its way too risky with Betfairs current rules and security systems.
I need to find the best system for moving money in and out of my Befair account when I start and finish trading without incurring charges. Any advice appreciated.

Rosebowl, what do you think the hacker's intentions were, I mean was it just some kid doing it because he could and placing random bets, or did they try to register a new card to withdraw your funds? I take it you lost money because the bets lost, not because they withdrew any money?

Seems to have been a plan to make quick profit and then withdraw via false account.

What did the hackers try to do? Add cards, withdraw money, gamble with the money in the account?

all sounds a bit worrying for me, Betfair seem to take the stance "its your account , you should manage it"
IE F..k you if your account is hacked.
Personelly I'm pretty sure Ladbrokes/Hills/Corals would love to hear about one of these situations !!!!

interesting reading this, i  phoned BF about this and they were unable to convince me about security other to say  to use a strong password, don't let people have access to your account etc .

a bit worrying

Jimmy ,shouldn't they have  public liability insurance ?  If money was stolen from my bank i would expect a refund .

I dunno. Maybe they do. You could well have been speaking to someone who is unaware of that.

Jimmy ,i have read cases where BF has refused to compensate although i don't have the finer details  of each case ,only the person's word on other forums. You can google some of them anyway .

I can understand BF refusing to know about a case where someone has disclosed passwords or cases of carelessness etc ,but we need some sort of protection .

There are reports of people who didn't get paid, as well as people who did.

I'm guessing you are scaling up your balance coach! It becomes more of a worry then. I have been the victim of fraud on a credit card, and when something happens on your credit card or bank account you have nothing to worry about other than filling out a bunch of forms and having to wait months to get your cash back.

Never an encouraging read these kind of threads. Can't believe how BF seem so distanced from such a subject, they need to address this. Their approach and what seems general lack of interest/responsibility with past fraudulent cases doesn't fill me with confidence. Plain
