Gambling games in Ancient Greece were popular among soldiers and the upper classes. Indeed according to historians, gambling, particularly in dice games, was so popular during the period that the residents created associations specifically for gaming.
Callistratus, an Athenian orator, famously said about gambling "games in which losers go on doubling their stakes resemble ever recurring wars, which end only when the warring parties cease existence."
