The spread betting firms often offer better sign up bonuses than traditional bookies, so I have used them for that.
Went to a few free seminars, but still don't really have an idea of how to make a profit. Except by the edge created by signup bonuses :D

You don't need a background in the financial sector nor do you need a large bank. I started spread betting merely with hundreds of pounds and I was able to build a bank over time.
My advice is set your stakes like this:
imagine the worst foreseeable downside outcome to the bet(not necessarily the worst possible, just the worst you can foresee if a few things go wrong.) So for argument's sake let's say you buy corners at 12. You cannot see less than 7 being the makeup unless something very unusual happens. So your worst foreseeable loss is 5 points. Your normal fixed odds stake is £100. Then you buy corners for £20pp. Of course you are only buying if you assess the upside as greater or more likely than the downside or both....
Follow something like that and you won't go too far wrong providing you are a good judge of the sport you are betting on.
A mind for calculations probably does help but you would not need to be a mathematical genius.

sell FPs on golf majors for consistent players who I don't think will win (probably net make a small loss 'cos the spreads are pretty much spot on).
Buy goal minutes of occasional scoring central defenders who are playing teams weak at set pieces (e.g. Huth v Liverpool) - ahead on that one but play very infrequently and there are plenty of losers.
Benefit from occasional rick e.g. S p o r ting quoted spread on no. of England players to wear gloves in qualifier in Russia (I think) and was clear from interviews with fans on SSN that it was very mild - managed to get on before they cottoned on and changed the spread.
I'm a low risk buyer generally - win infrequently but lose little. Suspect you need to be a high stakes seller with balls of steel and great judgement and knowledge to really make it work.

People think spread betting is more volatile than fixed odds betting but imo it is quite the opposite. Well, apart from the odd total wipeout, and the odd monster profit that will inevitably come along.
In fixed odds betting you could lose a huge payout by a matter of one point, run, goal etc. Or similarly win by a similar tight margin, so the difference between a big collect and a wipeout can be tiny. With spread betting it is rarely like that. If you almost win then you aren't likely to be losing much money.

Many of the spreads are horrendous. Looking at how many goals a team will score, you get something like 0.3 - 0.5. That's pretty dreadful.
Hopefully they will be able to tighten spreads in the future. It would be good if betfair offered markets like this. I would be able to use it to calibrate my models.
They don't seem to be popular on bf though, as total goals index and corners index have low liquidity.

Not worth the hassle , the spreads on most markets make the bookies at Wolves and Kempton look generous. If you manage to beat those you'll then need to put up with the muppets on the other end of the phone either changing the quote or knocking back your stake.

Investor the range markets have never taken off because Betfair never understood that people wanted to play these markets in play and not as a straightforward bet. It's a pity spreadfair died but I just don't think there's enough players out there as it never really took off with the majority of punters.

Correct, at one time you got limited to half of what you wanted, but frigged around to pee you off with loads of underhand tricks, now i.g just limit you to £1. Sporting will give you a good run though.
Made it pay on my chosen sport, but not when I have strayed away to others. Tend to use now when I see little downside, but a big upside.

Baby Jesus, the Total Goals Index market goes in play, but usually there is no money there to back or lay at 'reasonable' odds. I would assume it would be very easy for someone to use a bot to provide liquidity. I already started a thread asking why this doesn't happen some time ago.
I still haven't figured it out :D

SportsSpread in dublin now under new mgmt following a buy out and are agressively targeting tighter spreads. They were spread free on seven high profile events this year and lthough their service is limited to the major events they will trade all the live games in running. worth a close look.
