I need a spreadsheet that can look at the numbers in cell A1, A2 etc and then do a calculation on the second part of the number depending on how large the whole number is, and then display the answer X in a seperate cell. Like this:

If 2.00, X=1.5 +(B/2)

If 2.00, X=1+(B/2)

If 2.00, X=1.5

does the forum not display greater than and less than signs?

well, the first one should be GREATER THAN 2, second is LESS THAN 2 and the third is 2.
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 3:32 PM BST
It's actually easier to just ommit the first part of the number.
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 3:32 PM BST
omit*

So rather than a 3 digit number i'll use 2.

first sign of madness...
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 3:37 PM BST
haha i know.

unless anyone can show me how i think it might be easier to just use the digits after the decimal point and then have seperate sheets for each of the variables.

the numbers before the point i mena
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 3:40 PM BST
actually, it would also work if i used the equation

=(A3/2) - 0.05
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 3:44 PM BST
maybe not.
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 3:45 PM BST
=(A3/2)+0.5

there we go. now i can have all three digits included.
Report Compound Magic • April 13, 2010 4:18 PM BST
is this what you are trying to say:

=IF(A1>2,B/2+1.5,IF(A1<2,B/2+1,1.5))
Report Compound Magic • April 13, 2010 4:28 PM BST
The B needs to be a cell location with a value in it or a defined value put in name manager.

and yes it will work in open office.
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 4:31 PM BST
cheers mate, i've done it in a different way. i've put one formula for numbers greater than two in one cell and for less than 2 in another and it seems to work.
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 4:31 PM BST
but i'll save that anyway for future reference. could be handy for anything more than one or two cells.
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 9:34 PM BST
CM, just wondering, in my example, B is the second part of a number

i.e

2.00

=

2.BB

Is that the way you did your formula?
Report Compound Magic • April 13, 2010 10:20 PM BST
No, I did not know what the B related to.

If it is the decimal part of the number in Cell A1 and you wanted to
divide only the decimal by two if the cell is more than or less than 2

=IF(A12,RIGHT(A1,2)/2+1.5,IF(A12,Right(A1,2)/2+1,1.5))

Only works if there are two decimals if more decimals it would need a len() formula
to know what needs to be divided.

That may be what you want, if not a bit more info might help.
Give me an instance of your full number in Cell A1 is and what your answer
should be and I will give you the formula.

If your cell A1 is 3.65, it is more than 2 do you want to divide by 2 only the .65 or
all of the number that is more than 2 ~ i.e. 1.65
Report Compound Magic • April 13, 2010 10:26 PM BST
I copied and pasted the formula so it did not put in the > sign
so the formula should be
=IF(A1>2,RIGHT(A1,2)/2+1.5,IF(A1<2,RIGHT(A1,2)/2+1,1.5))
Report Compound Magic • April 13, 2010 10:28 PM BST
Try again
=IF(A1>2,RIGHT(A1,2)/2+1.5,IF(A1<2,RIGHT(A1,2)/2+1,1.5))
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 10:38 PM BST
If your cell A1 is 3.65, it is more than 2 do you want to divide by 2 only the .65 or
all of the number that is more than 2 ~ i.e. 1.65

Cheers for your time,

I want to divide the .65 by 2

but then add two to whatever the answer is.

So

A1 B1

3.65 2.32
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 10:42 PM BST
^^^ but that's only correct for a value greater than 3.00
Report Compound Magic • April 13, 2010 10:45 PM BST
If it less than 2 do you still want to add 2? or some other number?
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 10:46 PM BST
if less than 2

1+(B/2)
Report Compound Magic • April 13, 2010 10:46 PM BST
So if A1 was 2.65 what should your answer be?
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 10:47 PM BST
so

A1 B1

1.99 1.5

'ish
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 10:48 PM BST
2.65 = 1.63
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 10:48 PM BST
^ WRONG

2.65 = 1.83

im sure you can see what im trying to do
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 10:49 PM BST
but no need to blurt it either way!
Report Compound Magic • April 13, 2010 11:02 PM BST
Got it now. All you need is

=A1/2+.5
Report Rocket to the FACE • April 13, 2010 11:10 PM BST
see my earlier post:

Rocket to the FACE 13 Apr 15:45

=(A3/2)+0.5

there we go. now i can have all three digits included.

Cheers for your time though. Honestly. It's always nice to get some help from someone who owes you f*ck all. And it's always appreciated and always remembered.

And I'll save the earlier formula you put up because it might be useful.
