Feck , he has paid £700 on the 20k winning bets but still has to pay BF another 1300 to make it up to the 20% , is this correct ?

frames, from what I was told he would have paid 1050 implied commission so would be 950 short. Note, contrary to what has been said above and assuming I've understood correctly, if the following week he lost 10K then he would be due a 950 rebate (don't know if it would be phisically rebated or held back to offset against future payments).

In simple terms if someone wins £100k in a year a pays, say £10k, in commission because they are a high margin low volume punter will Betfair take another £10k off them?

Is that what this is? If this is the case those backing short priced horses might revert to the track to bet.

Out of curiosity are there any people here who actually use the "purple place"??

How easy is it to get a 1-2k bet on the first runners in the market in the horse markets for example?

The greedy BF shareholders want to go public, so this is a way to boost their bottom line short term and damn the long term repercussions.

the question is if they put 20% rule ( i know it is unworkable) would they be happy after that?

or another stupid way of taking money will be implemented later until they fall down?

so if you bet 100 horses at price p, and x horses win...
then your profit on the wins is x*(p-1)
your gross profit is x*(p-1) + x - 100 = x*p - 100
your commission rate is c, so you pay c*x*(p-1)
so your implied commission IC = c*x*(p-1)/(x*p-100)

so if c is 0.04, and looking at a fixed profit of 20 (so x*p = 120)
p = 12, x = 10 ... IC = 0.04*10*11/(120-100) = 0.22 (ie 22%)
p = 6, x = 20 ... IC = 0.04*20*5/(120-100) = 0.20
p = 2, x = 60 ... IC = 0.04*60*1/(120-100) = 0.12

so it has a differing effect depending on what odds you are backing?? or am I reading this wrong?

Lets be clear the only people this affects are a) people who are in profit over the past 60 weeks and b) people who generated less than 20% commission on that profit. Im just under the 20% figure at 18.5% so it will not take too much massaging of my figures to get above 20% and avoid the charge.

Obviously the people who will be hit hardest are the people who never have a loser - traders green screeners whatever. Low margin big players will not be affected ie market makers. High margin low volume players will be affected a lot.

If this one is as well thought through as the BFSP fiasco it could do major damage to Betfair.

If this one is as well thought through as the Betfair automatching bot fiasco it could do major damage to Betfair.

Isnt the dream of actually being able to win the thing that get people here in the first place and keeps them here. This really takes the edge of that. If you are lucky enough to actually win Betfair will charge u more.

"Low margin big players will not be affected ie market makers"

Completely the opposite, it will kill the MM's as they have very little margin to play with.

Whatever the outcome Betquak will gain as people look to avoid a 20% charge. It makes perfect sense to try and avoid that.

shouldnt they have an eye on the fact that often, unless you are backing real outsiders and whatever the sport, an equivalent or better price is available if you shop around. The more they hike the commission the more they erode the premise of better odds on betfair..

betfair offers on avg 20% better odds than bookmakers then take that back even though these money makers they are trying to manage dont effect many customers. this has to be **

frog, all tis does is make traders pay their fair share. No one affected is of any worth to you, I or betfair and as far as I'm concerned them all fkng off would not affect anyone but themselves.
