The General Forum died last night after a long fight against the cancerous effects of inanity, profanity, stupidity and idiocy that have proved too much for the once great GF.

Despite the laudable attempts of many to make the GF an oasis in the desert, the forces of dumbness have prevailed and the GF has succumbed to the inevitable and has been swamped by a sandstorm of trivia of such magnitude that the dream of a citadel of knowledge and information has been overcome.

The GF was allowed to come to its end by its origiinators, BF, who failed to see that they had created something which would be their most prized asset, coveted by others, and something which would become a siginicant reason why many would look forward to a morning read that would impart some new fact or opinion that added lustre to the daily grind of making a dollar.

BF failed to appreciate the worth of the GF and allowed the choking weeds of mediocrity to strangle the very life out of it.

Farewell good General Forum. You were a King amongst men but you have been buried in a paupers grave.

The thing is, one can't alter the evolutionary process whether it be progression or regression, one has to like it or lump it, IMO. Maybe as the game gets harder and more cut throat, successful punters are mainly choosing to keep themselves to themselves, which only leaves the drivel, which could be taken as a good sign.

Btw, if you think this forum is bad, take a look at the Football Forum!

Report Sandown March 2, 2010 11:17 AM GMT
Do BF understand how important it is to set at least one crossbar very high so that people with knowledge and experience can be heard? Plenty of people wish to learn from each other.

A Betting Theory heading might do it.

On the other hand, there are so many challenge threads & similar that surely they should be removed to a group specially for them or at least combined with competitions.

There would still be a large diverse number of threads left for the General Betting forum.

The problem of good threads dropping off because they do not receive the same number of replies as dross/chatty threads also needs to be understood and action taken.
Report The Betfairy March 2, 2010 11:23 AM GMT

Report dlarssonf March 2, 2010 11:24 AM GMT
don't be silly sandown, people make comments on here that would make you sick and aren't even policed and you think that making a betting theory segment would eradicate the drivel.

Betfair love the cesspit of a forum because believe it or not it is a selling point for them, its where the dole merchants can hang all day whilst wasting their money

i kinda agree with you sandown, i keep asking where do newbies go to learn the basic-who is teaching them--this could be an ideal starting point where you could gain a better understanding and increase knowledge.

Sadly the majority of threads tend to be "look at me " syndrome with Lay/Nap of the day etc and the better one's quickly drop off.

Report Sandown March 3, 2010 11:04 AM GMT
The thing is, its not just newbies who would benefit from a place where people are prepared to discuss, debate, inform, educate - sounds like the BBC charter -even old hands would benefit. There is always more to know. You can never know enough. If you think you know it all then you will learn eventually, probably at great cost, that you don't.

BF have sub-contracted the management of the forum, but they would be wise to retain control over standards and use. I don't think they understand how important the GF, in particular, is in building customer loyalty to the brand.

What a bunch of Tree hugging numpties you all are.Liberal Democrates I presume. These" Holyier than Though" postings I generally choose to ignore. But "Getting Better"has wound me up too much.
So I'll have my say. Firstly you conveniently call this the General Forum, which is incorrect. It is & this is the clue the "General Betting Forum".Now people post on here with different idea's & theories. Some good & some bad, some about football, some horse racing, maybe a bit of tennis.People tend to post there idea's & thoughts on here while having a bet.It is a betting exchange after all.
I for one do not expect to become a proffesional or in the long run make a profit. If I do brilliant,if not so what. It's my pastime.
Why you all frequent these forums is beyond me.How can you think that someone with a challenge about football or whatever is ill placed on this General Betting Forum.
But then numb nuts "Getting Better"is ok to post something about life sentances in the states.I bet he's a "Jamie Bulger" shouldn't have gone to jail freak.
The main reason that I occasionally join a challenge on here is because it makes it a little more fun. Also I can,as I did last night ask an opinion of someone who has an opinion that I respect (DFC) for example & this can help.I changed my opinion on a seletion last night & it turned a loser into a winning bet.It was only £60-00 but hey, thats reason enough for me.
Now,what has "Getting Better" got to input, that is going to improve anyones betting ways on here.
You should all go & join a Forum on "Amnesty International"or Green Peace etc.One further thing, please dont forget that a vote for the "Liberal Democrates" is a wasted vote.

The forum is certainly not what it has been previously, but that's the same of all the internet forums, they gradually get diluted into mush.

2p2 being a great example. Pre-2003 it was the best ever gambling site. Then moneymaker won the wsop and the idiots invaded en masse and by 2004 it was a cesspit.

You do however only get out what you put in. There have been some reasonable debates on here this week, albeit a little lower level than I'd like. The excel query threads are almost always incredibly helpful and I'm sure that the various technical threads monitors/broadband/laptop types etc are helpful to those concerned with such matters. As I suspect are the API ones (though they always seem rather spammy to me)

There is an awful lot of crap, but the good news is that means there are still an awful lot of crap gamblers out there, especially given that I would happily bet that the forum as a whole represents the more thoughtful of gamblers.

Whoever starts a thread does, to an extent, have "ownership" of that thread in the sense that he/she has a right to direct the the course of the thread to his/her desires. If the thread originator was given some kind of editing control, whereby they could delete posts which they thought were not a positive contribution, then the quality of a thread might be maintained. If necessary, to avoid complete censorship, perhaps these "deleted" threads could be contained in some kind of separate appendix which could still be accessed. Even creating an area at the end of the thread might work, if it was prefaced by the wording "edited by thread originator."
