And a tip that may be helpful , always ask for a Tuborg when ordering a beer , not Carlsberg.

Stay with Betfair, it is the best value that you will get. Live racing in Copenhagen and provincial towns. Mostly trotting throughout the year, but "Galop" in the summer. Dogs in a couple of places too, Odense normally has 8 x 8 dog races on race days. Markets (tote only) are very weak, and small stakes make sense. Do not use the state outfits for betting at prices, like everything else it is taxed to the hilt. Very expensive now compared to a couple of years ago, partly due to the falll in the Sterling value. If you're buying beer in the supermarkets, it is good value in the Lidl and Aldi outlets. You'll need a job unless you've found a "rich girl"!

One more thing, if you have Sky then take it with you. Only need a UK bank account plus address there. A must for sport and betting. If not, then a Freesat box would allow some "live" sport for betting purposes. Don't know where you are going o live, but a 1 metre dish does the job, except for some channels in disgusting stormy weather!

I'l be living in Brondby (near Kobehavn), my girl is rich but she spends it all on shopping so I need a job. I was thinking of looking for something in the betting offices just to help me learn the language to start me off. Will I be welcomed by the Danes or will I be treated like a Foreigner in the bars, etc? I will try my best to learn the language but it sounds so damn impossible for an English voicebox.

You will find some of the best English outside of England here. You need to pick up the language a bit to know what is going on though. If you have a London dialect, the pronunciation is a little more precise on the vowel front 9 to 3 (London) in fact. The betting places here are different to England, and by culture they do not gamble as much as the Brits, seemingly preferring multiple bets. You will be in the most lively place in the country, the Danes can be a little conservative I find. Known my wife for nearly 30 years, and married for 20, and still the humour is a little different. The people are friendly though, and pleased to speak English. It will be what you make of it, of course. Danes are very proud of their country, it is a must to fly the national flag on birthdays etc. without fear of offending anybody! It will help for starters to get some TV sorted, my wife will not do without British tv, but for different reasons to me!

Eldrick, wife gets to look more like her mother every day, and it's herself that says that! I must say I do agree though, and having met her mother back in 1983, I should have known! Weall change as we get old, but she is still an attractive lady for me (and for others I am told). There has been a lot of other benefits too, and I'm not complaining! Denmark is a very quiet place, not a lot happens here, but Copenhagen will be the liveliest. As I still work out of England, we have a "bolt-hole" there, and wife loves being back there, as it is where we lived most of the time. I think that "Job" will like it, and soon get used to it providing he ensures he retains his betting capabilities!

There are 9 tracks in Denmark, 8 mostly trotting (some have galop too in the summer) and Kalmpenborg which is galop. There are at least 2 with dog racing, in Odense it is before the horse racing. They also cover racing from Swedish tracks. You coiuld get to enjoy it! To place your bets you need to find outlets that handle danskspil, oor the internet. Patrick, I don't look it that often when I am there, I have ATR, but I have never seen, and doubt if there is any UK racing on there. They like to keep to their own events to encourage the tote betting there, and grab their percentage from that. Scandinavian events only have I seen, plus the big trotting from France.

yes thankyou Buzzer I'm here in Denmark living it up. ** all in Brøndby, but Køpenhavn is amazing city although damn expensive. Need to make more on here to get by until I learn Dansk (which is damn hard too)
Betting can be done at all newsagents and shops like doing the lottery back home for football and tennis. They don't have specialist betting shops like in UK. I'm not even going to attempt going through horse form here, stick to UK markets and trading the earlies. Went to Brøndby v FC Nordsjælland Thursday night, it was like watching football in slow motion! Good atmosphere and experience though. Danes seem generally friendly and decent folk so far. They live there life right and you are right EXPAT they are very proud of their nation. Copenhagen is awesome, beautiful city....everything is within walking distance too once you get into the centre. I strongly recommend visiting for at least a weekend, but bring some money because it ain't cheap that's for sure. p.s. did you know there are twice as many bicycles in copenhagen than cars? |

As I am stuck in Bucharest at the moment (working), I will add a post; I would advise you to look at the Greyhounds at Odense. I think by studying them you could have some fun for small bets only; the tote pools are small. They normally race on alternate Wednesdays, and you could go as it is about 1 1/2 by train from Copenhagen. 20 kr to get in for sometimes 8 dog races, an 10 horse races including trots. As I said, I advise you to stay with Betfair as the government Tote take-out there is astronomical. You are in the most expensive place in the country, but you can make it. Do look at getting a Freesat box at least, for the sports coverage. Good luck with the Danish: it's not so bad, just too many vowels for a person of a London patois!

It depends what sort of person you are iqmj, but you must always consider that, as in most places around the world, people will be talking boring rubbish for 90% of the time.
Anything interesting you will get translated and anyway when you try to speak Danish they will clock your accent immediately and speak English for you. It is a highly arrogant attitude to expect this to occur for you, but it generally will. Like anywhere you normally will get the life you deserve at the end of the day. Good luck. |

I cannot recommend any cheap bars in town, as our place is on Fyn, which is the island to the west. If you are buying beers for home, I recommend Aldi wher you can buy a "Ren" Pilsner which is brewed by VestFyn brewery in Assens, fyn, and is comparable to the "big" names, but much cheaper than the Brugsen, Fakta and Bilka supermarkets. As with a lot of the continent it is cheaper to drink at home. With the Danish, it really does help to learn, as you can then understand what is going on around you. The local commune could help you find the local "SprogSkole", where free lessons are given to immigrants and Thai and Vietnamese ladies who are newly married to Danish men. It won't cost you anything, and will help you get along. It is very easy there of coursa anyway, as the English is so good.
I hope that it goes well for you, I met my wife nearly 30 years ago, and have been married for 20. No complaints at all, however we were based in England for most of the time, and retain a "bolthole" there, as she misses it! Good luck anyway. |

thanks for the replies PAT much appreciated. My missus is helping me with Dansk and I have books, internet - although a free school would be a good option. I love it here so peaceful. Copenhagen is great city, beautiful place. Just studied Kempton, now off for a walk down beach ;)

Sorry, only been to Copenhagen on business so only remember the river running through.
For entertainment, there's a 24 hour 7-11 shop there. Go late at night during the week. The guy that works there is usually whacked out on speed to get through the night. Have had some great conversations. |
