After years of prolonged lows and fleeting highs on here i've decided to start afresh and stick to a gameplan. It worked for someone else and i hope it can do the same for me. My betting suffers like many from bad money management and impatience. Recently this has really got me down both mentally and financially.

On saturday i put £10 in my empty account backed a short priced winner and then managed over the afternoon to put my balance at around £450. I then did what i always do after a good day in the UK and went stateside for more action. This time though rather than blowing a large chunk i played small and put another £80 or so on. On Sunday i played the 2 footie games and had a few bets on the racing to more small success. In between i've been thinking hard about how not to go the usual route. So i withdrew £250 and from the remainder i am setting aside £500 as a bank for the plan. It's a plan set out for laying horses rather than backing and that's how i'm going to use it.

I'm going to adopt the staking method put forward by Maria Santonix in her much talked about Laying System thread where she turned £3,000 into £100,000 in just under a year. That invloved having 3 price bands/stakes in proportion to the size of the bank which is calculated on a daily basis. However the stakes go up with each new bank high, but they don't go down in line with the bank unless 35% of the bank is lost (this never happened for Maria). The 3 price bands will be the same for my plan as follows.

Prices below 3.5 are staked as 1% of the bank. Prices 3.6 upto 7.4 are staked as 0.6% of the bank and prices 7.5 to 11 are staked as 0.4% of the bank. This is a laying system though and stakes are the backers stake, not my liability.

Maria managed almost 86% success rate across 303 days betting involving 4131 selections. That's an average of nearly 14 selections a day. I'm going to be selecting less per day than that but if i can get the same sort of strike rate using the same price bands then the banking structure should keep me safe. As Maria pointed out, it's all about money management and that's why i'm going to use this thread as a stick to keep me in line. Progress may well be slow,if at all, but Maria showed just what could be done with total patience and an unswerving gameplan. Hopefully i can emulate a fraction of that success. Just to stay liquid on here would be a bonus at the moment ;)

So i'm just going to stick to the plan and keep it simple. I'll post the selections after i've matched them before racing of course and give an update when i can later that day. Any comments will be welcome but not too much abuse please!

good luck mginvest

given that you've been here for so long dont you think that starting with 1/6 of Maria's starting bank is probably a bit on the short side, that could have a undesirable effect because the amounts are so small and you become reckless because they are meaningless to you (just supposing ;) )

Also if things workout well in the beginning you will then wish you would've started with a bigger bank for the same strike rate
Report mginvest February 8, 2010 12:01 AM GMT
Lusitano - It's a case of making do. I was only prepared to put in a tenner on Sat (i was betting from the inlaws a long way from home on an ancient laptop just for some interest really) so to actually have a working bank is a bonus at the moment. I've got a long way to get last 18 months losses back but at some stage i've got to take the bull by the horns IE either shape up or ship out. Thanks for comments tho.

JM - Been there too many times myself mate. It's almost worse than putting in a decent amount and losing it. That's why i'm making a determined effort and going back to a mode of play that actually did me ok a few years back namely laying horses rather than winner searching but now trying to manage the money properly.

Good luck Mginvest. Personally I'm a great believer in strict level stakes, I mean have staking plans ever worked for you in the past? I know the Maria plan worked at the time for her, and I must admit I haven't read her full story as I'm not that interested, but does she still trade and if so has her success continued? She should be worth a mint by now? I guess my belief is that if one can't make it pay to level stakes, then the method won't work long term.
Report Matthew Webb February 8, 2010 8:40 AM GMT
Good luck with this. I came across this challenge and whilst it sounded good I came across 3 main problems...

1) Your selections still have to be sound to profit anywhere near as much as Maria, guessing will be probably elude to small profits/losses.
2) As back prices are usually the highest on here you will always be laying at the highest price and in many times higher than the true price.
3) You are staking more on the horses less likely to lose (under 3.5) which is not mathematically sound.

That said, I hope you do succeed - I'll be following with interest!
Report mginvest February 8, 2010 9:49 AM GMT
Ok. I should have said that my selections will be based on my own (hopefully) sound logic not just blind luck. Of course there will be losing runs but they are unavoidable. I was going to discard the shorter ones but in the past i've done ok pinpointing dodgy favs. Anyway thanks for the comments so far.

Todays stakes are £5/£3/£1 in line with plan. Selections are

I would point out that you will need exceedingly good luck or a very high level of mathematical skill or brilliant inside information.

In general- ITCANTBEDONE-but of course there are a few WHOCANDOIT. Are you one? We shall see. Hoarse racing is the market where one is least likely to succeed. ITDONTMEAN that you won't though. No damage done today but started well before a couple of winners set the day back. Some of the staking looks slightly out of line with the plan because i was already matched on a couple into the next band and then added to the bet when the price drifted into the next band. Anyway, it took Maria some days before the bank went significantly forward. That's the way of the plan though. Here are the results. My comm rate is 4.1% at the mo.

Sorry Guys. Fell off the wagon on the first circuit. :(

I did lay all of Thursdays selections but to more than i should have and of course Zaffeu bit me on the ass. You all know what happened then - red mist. The only consolation is that off the 10 top band lays ie under 3.5 i got 9 right. I will be back to try the plan again but with more cash behind me. A someone said earlier they didn't think the returns would be enough for me using the minimum bank. They were right.

I'm down but i'm not out. Next time though i will be sticking to lower prices probably less than 8.0. Also i think the staking needs a more comprehensive band. The jump from under 3.5 stakes to over 3.5-7.4 is too broad i think.

After several ups and downs i've finally set aside a new bank to restart this plan. The rules will basically stay the same as Maria's except i have altered the price bands and the stake percentages. From now on the price bands and stakes will be 3.5 or less 2%, 3.6 to 5.9 1.3% and 6.0 to 7.8 0.8%.

The bank will be £1000 and i'm going to limit the number of lays to 4 a day. Also i'll be withdrawing some profits at various stages in a bid to redress the balance on my many deposits over the last few years.

I know the last plan went t1ts up early on but that was down to my stupidity so hopefully i've learnt a lesson and can move on.

First day will be Thursday so i'll update before racing tomorrow.

Good luck. You are on the right path and with a few adjustments you will succeed...but...and this is a big but, you
will need to analyse why Maria was (apparently) successful. Several factors are critical:
long term approach,
fixed small stake,
odds range
discipline
early odds
I believe it was a combination of these factors which produce long-term success, not only for Maria, but others on here. I know that BTO employs a similar laying strategy as mine and others who enjoy laying.
All the best my friend. Remember to hang in there in the rough days ahead...I guarantee there will be many of those! ( If it was easy, everyone would do it, right?)
Report mginvest April 15, 2010 9:43 AM BST
NO - I agree her selections were vg but the staking plan kept her out of harm when the going got a little rough. I failed in the last attempt because i let outside financial influences come into it which triggered me into first raising the stakes beyomd the rules and then chasing when i got a hit. Selection wise i hit the hoped for targets especially in the less than 3.5 band. Anyway we'll see. Thanks to those wishing GL.

Too much focus on the staking, not enough on the selections being good value lays, IMO.

Maria either got there because she got lucky (of 100000 challenge threads, the odds are that there will be a successful one, and because of the way the internet and human nature works, that one is lauded while the other 99999 are forgotten about) or because she actually had an edge when it came to selecting her selections.

Staking is mere fine tuning, the icing on the cake, nowhere near the whole cake itself.

GL, you write well, if you can apply that intelligence to your selection method then you have more than half a chance IMO.

Good luck mate hope you can turn it around and make a couple of quid but I honestly think this staking system is flaud in so many ways, people seem to get pulled in by it cause maria made it work but there's many who have used it and have gone bankrupt, no system works unless you have an edge and can pick losers 85 - 90% of the time I dont think you can get away with 70-80% success rate with laying anymore and todays markets are not like what it was like when maria had her success, things have changed imo I dont think the value is there anymore and when you do win you are going to get done by commission and if your really successful you will have the PC charge to contend with, gl mate hope it goes well but unless you can get full houses everyday of the week when you lay then this system will not work, it just takes one loss and you are chasing losses

Hello Shabba.... 15 Apr 19:25
I would have to strongly disagree with your discouraging view of laying. Checking my stats for this WEEK, I have laid 573 bets and taken 12% profit AFTER commission. I know nothing of horses, but plenty about bookmaking. There are layers (Maria being a rather well-known example) making it pay. I disagree with the view that the selections are crucial, rather the opposite...the odds and staking are crucial. Bookmakers know this, and have know it for many, many years.

Ask yourself this question: Who profits in this game? Who is still standing after 200 years of betting? That's right...the good old bookie.

Good luck to all my fellow layers and bookies! Keep the horseshoes pointed down!

I've also deposited £200 to use outside of this plan on anything i see that deserves a back. It's seperate funds not used in the lay bets but it's there to make a profit if poss. I think having it there will actually help me concentrate on sticking to this lay plan.
