As many of you will know, to place a phone bet with a bookie or even Betfair all you have to do is say your account number and your name then you are able to place any bets you wish ....

If someone were to overhear your account and then place a bet without your knowledge who would be liable? Would the bookies give a refund due to their lack of security or would you be liable for letting someone hear you?

I have placed bets for mates over the phone if they couldn't do it ....

I have never heard of a ruling for this before, anyone know?

you're responsibility I would guess if you have to give them your account number, since nobody should know it but you and betfair/bookies. Never placed a bet over the phone though. Do you not have to give them your telephone account number? think it's private so should be your responsibilty I would guess

what's the point of placing a bet---they can't collect the winnings

I used to place bets on public phones, like in snooker clubs or venues .... well, say someone didn't like you are done it for a laugh, they know your name and account number and could easily do it. I then asked my main bookie to add a password to my account and they would ask me for say the 4th letter .... but this was only on request.

If one of your mates placed a bet and it lost you would be raging, just wondered if you could argue that you did not place the bet as it was overheard and you did not knowingly give the details out ...

Yeah yazza, when you call any bookies you say your account number out loud and your name .... anyone could overhear you

I guess they should provide a password. Works both ways, somebody could pretend it wasn't them that placed the bet, a random operator hears your bet and wouldn't know your voice so a bt difficult to work out.

There aren't alot of reasons though to do it(overhear and bet) since you can't collect winnings and you might sound suspicious if you don't know how much is in your account, so not many incentives to do so unless to wind up/annoy a friend etc.

So if someone saw your pin number and got hold of your debit card and clear your bank account, who would you blame then?

Also they would need to know which bookie you're with or they would have to try them all out

I think you could demand your 12p was refunded, Shalke.

Voice recognition.

A few years ago I once noticed a strange bet on my monthly Sid James statement so phoned them to enquire.

I claimed I never placed it (it was a losing bet obviously) they said they'd go back over the tapes and get back to me.

A few hours later they phoned back and told me it was their mistake and refunded me the £100.
