Which is the most simple HD Recorder

get a sky hd box....free instalation.....im not paying or receiving hd.....but can record 2 progrs. at once.

Sorry I meant HD as in Hard Drvie. The guy cant afford Sky + he just wants to make a one off payment to record freeview channels

The Humax freeview models will probably meet the requirements. Several models to choose from, depending on budget and hard drive requirement. Replay quality is indistinguishable from original broadcast. Has some intelligent features that will extend recording time if a programme over runs, but that is dependent on the broadcaster sending out a signal to that effect. The only downside could be the programme guide refreshes completely if you turn the box off. When you turn it back on it takes around 5 minutes to reload all the station programmes into the TV guide. You can speed this up a bit by tuning to BBC1, which has faster download speeds. To record a programme you just go to the guide, arrow over to the selection and press ok, you then have a series option or just a one off.

You can buy the Humax redorders at a good price from Richer Sounds shops http://www.richersounds.com/search/humax (no connnection), but if purchasing one, get the Freeview model. not a Freesat one unless he has a dish.

Don't think you can record two programmes while watching another GS. You certainly can't with sky+. You can record 2 progs but if the tv is on it will have to be showing one of them.

I think the Virgin box allows recording 2 channels while watching a third

Good point Feck N. Eejit. I didn't read the original question correctly. There are no freeview recorders with three tuners, so watching BBC1 and recording ITV1 and E4, for example, at the same time is not possible with one recorder. You could however get over it by connecting a freeview box and using that for live viewing. All a bit messy, also requiring a splitter for the signal, which may degrade the picture or another aerial to feed the other box. If the analogue signal is still up and running in his area it is possible to record two channels and watch another.

Thatnks Guys , maybe my post was over technical. In essence the old boy just needs to avail himself of freeview and have the same funtionality as his old VCR. It would be an added bonus to record and extra ch but that is not the end of the world.
