is it me or has there just been no studies on this?

I am just interested, I started a blog the other day just to keep a record of my modes on certain days compared to how much money I win or lose, and if it is directly involved with each other.

Now I wouldn't call myself the biggest of betters, I will have a bet on most things just to enjoy them and a serious (in my case, a few hundred on average, or now and then a grand or two)

Personally I would say I'm a good loser (If that is possible) I never tell anyone I know how much I bet and what I bet. So nobody knows when I win or lose, and therefore would be interesting to know how I keep it hidden, if I do, and when I don't how it affects me.

Not sure what I am getting at with all the info above, but just wondering if anyone else keeps any sort of info on if they win or lose and how it affects them in the real life. As I said, I dont have any problems and I'm a jolly feller, but just interesting in the point as I see people get**y all the time as I work in the bookies.

Just one question to anyone still reading, how do you react to a big lose? I find that if I am around people (at work or out) then I tend to react ok, I get angry for a few seconds to myself and then get over it, but if I am in the living room alone watching tele I get **ing angry. Am I the only one?

i dont tell anyone either, lose or win and as time goes by losing gets easier (less hard on yourself because its a sign that you have accepted that it comes with the package) and winning gets more neutral.

But i have to admit that between the time of the actual losing and maybe winning my feelings are pretty obsessive because i do give more value to the actual avoidance of losing than winning

but my style of betting its never the "Euromillions" type, its more like, step by step, until i've made 100 miles

Bookies have studied this plenty. Gambling causes a disconnection between person and mind. QED.

If I ever walk away, even with green in my pocket, it would be how it affects my moods.

This doesn't come down to winning or losing for me. it comes down to my brain being hazed over like any job where you spend too much time on it, thinking about it, gaining and losing.

When I am winning, it is not as though I am even in the world of betting.

If I am losing, unfortunately, based on how I gamble, it comes down to mistakes, overexposure, under-researched/over confidence (translated -stupidity). So it affects me with the sound of me kicking myself through the balance of the day.

My son will pick up on it when "stupidity" was on the menu.

I can see how someone that was heavily addicted or betting in a way that affects their family in a detrimental manner would be unbearable to live with.

One questions Onionss

Do you keep a detailed record of all your bets. Stake ,result,profit/loss and ROI ?

You are surely overstaking if you still work for a living and are betting two grand!

You should never experience a big loss if your staking is correct.

depends on whether you GAMBLE or INVEST

if you GAMBLE it's all you think about and affects everything around you

If you INVEST it becomes a job in the same way any job affects the mind and social life.

Personally I clock on at 6am and switch off at 1pm. A friend places my investments as I have a compulsive gambling addiction or a losing addiction (self-destruct addiction) I call it.

This way I research all events in the same state and in the same detail and level stakes are kept to at all times. He takes control of all the money/passwords, so I do not have the pressure or temptation to GAMBLE.

I make around 10-15 investments a week so it only takes him 5 mins on his lunchbreak. If I have the money I lose control and can make 15 gambles a day! I have to admit I have an illness and until I solve it, this is the only way I can invest successfully.

It works great though as I smash the target ROI to bits. The only disadvantage is I have to take the available price or put orders in where I won't know until the next day if matched and I cannot trade out. This may be more of an advantage though, as no temptation to lock in profit for the sake of it and no temptation to lump on unresearched events just because they are up next.

Gambling is when you don't do enough RESEARCH, abandon the STRATEGY (EDGE), OVER-STAKE, LOSE DISCIPLINE and FOCUS, change your EMOTION depending on results and do not get VALUE on every investment

Investing is when you RESEARCH thoroughly every event, keep to your STRATEGY and use your EDGE, keep to the STAKING PLAN, stay on the same EMOTIONAL level at all times and RESEARCH events in the same robotic manner (ROUTINE) and finally, you get VALUE with every investment

I gave the forums a break for a while when I made this decision and hence started to make some money, but I saw this thread and thought I would get involved as GAMBLING can have a major impact on the mind (it can take over all of your thoughts) and therefore destroy your social life.

I can now enjoy watching sports again and finally I can say I'm making profit using my knowledge. I sometimes watch the events invested in, but I do not feel any emotion now because the pressure of winning/losing has been taken away from me because I know I cannot GAMBLE. If you stick to level stakes and research every event invested in thoroughly, the only thing that can let you down is your selections. Before, the only thing that let me down was my GAMBLING ADDICTION, my selections have always been sound which is the frustrating thing looking back. But live and learn as they say.

My solution might appeal to other problem gamblers and is something to consider. I hear and read so many stories on here of "this time I will keep to the strategy and stay disciplined". But be honest it happens time and time again, so can you control it? If not you are better off not investing at all as eventually you will gamble it all away.

It is a sign of insanity when you repeat the same mistakes over and over again. Was I insane? Maybe....but even though you are an intelligent person, the uncontrollable GAMBLING nature kicks in. You can write as many rules as you want, it is a sub-conscious thing that takes over our brains.

Sorry if I rambled a bit, but hopefully my solution might help someone else who suffers not because of his/her knowledge or selections, they suffer because of their compulsive gambling bug. You need incredible patience and discipline to succeed in this game. I lack the patience or discipline - so someone else has to invest for me. If you stay disciplined and compound; even the smallest of banks can grow quite remarkably if you stay in control and do the RESEARCH.

Only one way to win on here and unfortunately it's RESEARCH, RESEARCH and more RESEARCH. You need to get the form-book out for hours and watch as much coverage as possible in your chosen sport/s. It becomes boring like any other regular job, but if you want to make money it needs to be done.

most of it is wrong although i admire him for going about correcting his flaws. but no matter how people dress it up, investing is a gamble.

Investing in anything is a gamble because no1 can predict the future, yes you have a better chance with research/hard work etc but it is still gambling

People obviously react differently to setbacks, financial or otherwise. I like to bet on the football in-play, so you leaver yourself vulnerable to a rollercoaster of emotions in those 90+ minutes.

I think its the ability to manage your emotions that determines how well or badly you cope with setbacks. Personally, if Im on the wrong end of, say, an unexpected late goal, a controversial incident (penalty or sending off that suddenly changes the game against me), then I always feel better if I let off steam immediately...usually by screaming at the telly, a very loud and agonising ARRGGHHHHHHHH and verbally abusing the player(s)/team/ref concerned. I also find thumping the carpet a useful coping mechanism. 3 or 4 does the trick.

Ill do this even if the missus or son (who both also enjoy watching football) happens to be in the living room when things have gone against me. They understand what Im going through, so I dont have to try and hide anything from them and I realise Im lucky in that respect. They soon realise how to read your feelings, too, because its usually written all over your face. After a really bad defeat, the missus knows best not to ask how much Ive just lost. But after Ive clearly had a good win it will be

Plechy - that's almost identical to my experience. Big losses normally result in some random household object finding itself halfway down the garden. Unfortunately I've broken several things, the last being a monitor :( No children have been harmed in the making of this post.

Attitude is everything! We're all different. If it works for you do it.If a system or stratey works, keep doing it! If it don't try another. But don't use your wages for this. Put aside a betting amount and use a small portion to start. If you lose it will not affect your bills etc.

The point of gambling is to feel the emotions, whether up or down. Nothing like being right about a race months in advance, or even a match during the mass pressure that your team may be applying withouit scoring.

That isnt to say that it should be reckless. In my strong moments, backing greyhounds, I write reasons, i put into words my work, and decide there is a bet or not. If so, I can wait all night for it to run. It will be a sensible stake , but the key is, if I didnt feel one ounce of emotion if he/she won or lost, I wouldnt bother.

I have been trading on the in play football markets for a few months now. Every time I make a mistake I make a note of it with 99% of them effectively being pilot error so I create a set of rules. As long as you dont make the same mistake twice you should be making an overall profit.

My rules so far are:
*Pick your market (in my case a football match) and stick to it.
*Dont chase when losing or after a loss.
*Learn to walk away from a badly performing market i.e cut your losses by trading out.
*If you have taken a big hit on one particular market such as the correct score then do not play it again (which I did recently by being greedy or gambling).

Keep your stakes in line with the price available, dont be greedy and if you take a hit you can be safe in the knowledge that you will be able to make up that loss sooner rather than later.

Every day is a new day so forget what happened the day before and it should keep you in the right mindset for your next market.

There is always that aspect of luck involved as well.........sometimes it is for you and sometimes it will be against you!
