Anyone fell foul of the new stinger visits whereby a person of 18-20 is sent into your shop and you are reported if you didn't challenge them for ID? I have recently been suspended for this. I'm off with full pay for 2 weeks then have to attend a disciplinary hearing.

If you have been caught out by this please let me know how you went on. 2 people who I know personally have received final written warnings over this and I am pretty sure they (Billys) will now be looking for people to make a example of.

Should I be expecting the sack? Should I actually bother to try and sort some union rep out for the meeting or just accept I have fecked it so to speak. I have seen the c.c.t.v pictures of the little scrotum they sent in and as far as I am concerned he still looks over 21.

Am I as well making some sort of impassioned speech about how people are old enough to get married, have kids, claim dole and get blown to bits in Afghanistan but can't have £3 at 4/6 or the world will end. Shall I highlight the hypocrisy of this policy when we are constantly brow beaten into pushing our f.o.b.t business and football coupons onto young customers? Or shall I just tell the d.o.m to get **ed and get in the giro queue?

Cheers.

Baldys' staff had the same 'visits' set up by the GC in my neck of the woods recently.
Said individual asks for advice before attempting to place a bet to give staff the chance to question his/her age.
If the bet is struck successfully without question the employee is treated like a criminal by the employer pending investigation or disciplinary meeting.

By the tone of your thread your heart is telling you to tell your employer to shove his job, i concur you will be far happier with yourself finding another form of employment as i believe your employer (billy) to be the worst of a bad mob when it comes to fairness to employees.

The "do they look under 21?" test is pretty much entirely subjective; there's your answer.

Tell your D.M. that you thought that the guy looked over 21. As long as they guy wasn't BLATANTLY 21 (i.e. wearing school uniform/in nappies), then they can't prove that you were ignoring the policy.

If they issue ANY kind of warning to you, take union action.

My 20:06 post should read "BLATANTLY under 21" instead of "BLATANTLY 21". I'm 21, and I can confirm that I wear neither school uniform nor nappies!

What has the world come to? Are these under 18s sent by the bookm akers themselves or some other authority?
Report azertyioup February 1, 2010 9:43 PM GMT
Who gives a fck if they are 19, 20 etc.

As long as they are old enough to be in there what's the problem?
Report CLYDEBANK29 February 2, 2010 8:56 AM GMT
Why send in 19-20 year olds when the legal age is 18 or over?

Underage gambling was never a problem in betting shops when I worked as a bookie manager in the late 80s. Must be the fruit machines.

Unbelievable.
Used to work for h1lls about 15/20 years ago, they were sneaky fkers then, but this is crazy.

Good Luck, but whatever the outcome, use this as a wake up call and get the hell out

Still no answer to the issue regarding these people not actually being under age.

Can I just point out that whoever it is who commented on Baldfred on here that Baldfred is the worst in the industry for fcking their staff over. Poor pay, single manning, no trust given to managers to manage. That Bald (unt makes my blood boil.

The reason for that is coz years ago, Fred lost an unfair dismissal case brought about by an ex employee. PBS were advisors to the employee at the time......

is it not a breach of your yuman rites to send in a decoy that could threaten your livelyhood.

Geniunely serious question, but is the law different in Ireland? :)
I went to a dogtrack over there at the end of last year, and school children were having the odd euro or two using the tote desks. These were kids of about 12 or 13 freely betting, if you'd served any of them under the look 21 rule then you'd have deserved to see your P45 :D

" Why send in 19-20 year olds when the legal age is 18 or over?"

It's meant to be because should "real" underagers come in, staff will be motivated/have experience on asking for id instead of not caring/being shy. The reason why the don't send(the GC) real underagers is because it is against the law lol. So they send people that look under 21/of young age. It is a bit crazy nowadays, too many people sent in and some look alot older than regulars.
Report IanP February 4, 2010 8:26 AM GMT
The Gambling Commission do use under 18's in their mystery shopper visits. Presumably 3rd party companies have to use young looking 18-20 year olds because it would be illegal for them to us under 18's

It still doesn't answer my question in relation to a member of staff having to go through the disciplinary procedure and eventually lose their job. If someone comes in who is old enough to be in the betting shop then there is no problem. It is not enough for an employer to discipline someone because they didn't ID a 19 year old because it is all down to perception. What might look young in one person's eyes may be old in another.

only in modern Pc britain -seriously you couldn't make this up -a guy gets suspended from work for serving a person with a LEGAL right by way of age to make a bet.
Report yazza101 February 4, 2010 6:04 PM GMT
that's the thing I agree azertyioup, it is unjust and if it happened to me I would argue it, they could give you a warning etc but to sack you for serving someone who is legally of age is wrong.

Any Update Jacks did you get off with a warning
Report fkqmz February 14, 2010 2:10 PM GMT
sorry if this is repeat but the reason they want you on a final written warning is because you cant really leave your job and they can get away with not giving you a pay rise. if they get you on a FWW they have you by the balls. as per previous, the policy is to ID those whoAPPEAR to be under 21. if you say you thought about it and decided the guy was 21 theres nothing anyone can say to you.

and as a parting shot, the next time your DM gets stuck in a shop due to sicknesses, send your 20 yo nephew in (or suitable substitute) and see what happens.
