It's what Betfair/Stock Exchange brokers do in their simplest form. Match both sides of an outcome and gain a small percentage. Sure they make quite a decent living out of it.

Still good money to be made but it's getting harder, for a long term arber like me that's a good thing as more people are likely to give up leaving a bigger share for the diehards.

Worst time ever to start even trying, takes a certain kind of personality to succed, from my experience that is less than 1% of the people I have ever met.

Things like the premium charge make it even harder to make money on arbing.
Why? You are just as likely (perhaps more) to win at the bookies and so with plenty of wins and losses on here it should help to avoid the premium charge

You'd be the worst arber in the world if you paid the PC. With all lays winning on BF and backs winning at the bookies. If that happended anyway, the bookies would close your account.

I have been charged pc and do not consider myself to be the worst arber in the world.
as i have stated often before, there are far sharper places in the world than betfair

Takes a lot of research and skill to make it work. You can't get lumps on anywhere anymore, unless you have consistently losing accounts where you can get a bit more on. That's not a problem anyway when you have access to say, 16 different b 3 65 , la d s, sp bet accounts. Slowly slowly is the way to do it. The ricks don't last long. Spread the bets around keep stakes low, be happy with £20 - £30 per time. Only arb / trade on horses. You need a decent amount of liquid funds available through various cards / accounts / betfair. Weekends is where best to make your dough. Very satisfying when you get it right will also stop you 'punting' along the way as you start getting very protective about your bank and every pound counts. I would have posted the same as Kenilworth above a couple of years ago. As I say you won't get rich quick and it might not be for everyone but works for me. Good luck

I had a look at this a few years ago - it looked hard then, and I rekon it is even harder now... Saying that - there have been times when I have noticed a few good arb opportunities between bookmaker and here.
I think the main issue is having enough speed to place the back + the lay before the arb opportunity closes up.
You'd probably need good software to pick them out quickly + direct you to the site, or place the bets automatically for you to make a half decent living from it, and even then, it's probably not gonna make you enough to live a decent life on...

I worked for a firm where we had developed software to scan the markets for opportunities and undoubtably the biggest problem was missing one side of the bet. We were able to trade automatically between exchanges and could hit betfair 100 times a second and still missed bets

Using commercial software is a waste of time and money because you and every other user will back the same thing at the same time .......marking you out as an arber.

It was ARBMIRAGE ? I remember to have paid more than 300 livres for 1-2 months. Well, i thought it was the best thing to win money easily. I ve tried this software on a snooker market once and as you said, i had a lot of unmatched bets.

go to a few indenpendants, asked them do they do a desposit account and one back show if they do and the shop is run by a manager, give him a £50 drink every week whether u win or lose and he wil be on your side. keep your bets small enough so that their are NOT the difference between whether the shop wins or loses.

the bottom line is that u cant arb on betfair with the premium charge in place.the only way is to use 2 other bookies.u never know which side of the arb u are going to win, so its pointless.

Ive got loads of betting accounts with the bookies, n altho i tend to do other things during the day now, I could make £250 per day comfortably arbing, and some days perhaps upto 4 figures.
Anyone who says it can't be done, doesn't have the ability to do it.

Need to have a large float, and be on good terms with the bookie. Perhaps send them flowers every week. If you take the p!ss too much, you'll get gubbed.

Dam buster - I disagree re premium charges - I'm looking at doing a little arb'ing to reduce/remove my premium charges by bringing commission/implied commission over 20%

If you are single, live at home and your outgoings are £500 a month, then full time arbing is the way to go, and very easy at that level.
If however, you have wife, kids, mortgage, etc and your outgoings are in the region of £3000 per month, full time arbing might be a much tougher proposition.

Question : in the long run how important is it to close out both sides when arbing? In theory, again in the long run, aren't both sides showing a potential value value and it doesnt matter whether you back one or the other? Sometimes you will miss a winner and sometimes you will miss a loser .. The main argument against this would be if the market consistently shortens the eventual winner at the time that you attempt to place your bet..?

This method can be frustrating; a firm's man bet a total of £12,000 on Grand National day and didn't back a winner, leaving them out of pocket after expenses were taken into account.

Unsurprisingly when you think about it the best strategy is to not close out unless both sides are value. This scenario is highly unlikely, especially if one side is on here and hence attracts bf commn. Howwever you need balls of steel for that strategy. Personally, when arbing was easy (I don't play any more) I tended to structure plays to only profit if the bookie side won and accept the loss of commn if things lost, but cover the stake. Better betters than me that I know took even more geared positions and made more money in the long run.

You just need to know the right Asian bookmakers (they aren't allowed to restrict your stake by Asian Laws, as all gambling firms out there are run by the Government). That's the very shortened version of the story, but if you know the right Asian firms, you only need 2 or 3 of them for about 10 arbs each day making over 5%

I disagree with the "why don't arbers just take the value side of the bet" argument. By arbing you can safely use a much larger portion of your bank than by taking the value bet. Also the extremely low volatility in arbing is preferable.
Using the Markowitz model, you can decide which is best for you.
Find a way to make the highest return, at a risk level you are comfortable with.
