n00b question on laying odds

only just created a betfair account and i dont understand the laying odds.

lets say i want to bet and the back odds are 1.5 and the lay odds are 1.6.

if i want to back, I'm matched with a layer at 1.5 (even though theres layers offering 1.6?)

if i want to lay, i'm offering odds of 1.6 to a backer and if the bet is matched the backer is getting odds of 1.6 which is more than what the back odds are?

i read the help thing but really only explains what a lay bet is but doesnt go into the details of the odds
