Serious question:
What do you tell family & friends who constantly keep asking "have you got another job yet"? I quit my job last September. I was very unhappy in it, very stressed and it was making me poorly. Since then I make enough to pay my bills each month and probably just earn a few hundred more than what I was earning on my paid salary. I feel very content & healthy-a feeling i hadn't had for a long time.
But now I'm being hen pecked from all sides-certain individuals can't cope because how I make my crust isn't "conventional".
I can get by with the opinions of so called friends, but what have you guys done when immediate family have nagged you? I almost feel obliged to jump back into a dead end job, become depressed again, just to appease others.

Just laugh at them.

"Haha, very good" that kind of thing until they get the message that they're dumb.

what's wrong with telling them the truth? So long as you are bringing money in they will get used to it and see it as positive.

Not serious answer ... there was a sketch show couple of years, good one where someone is saying at a dinner party that he's started a new job working from home, and everyone is seriously asking him ..' how do you fit in the mastu rb8ting with the work?'

i've been doing this for years and if i thump the desk when a trade goes wrong, the wife still thinks we're going to lose the house etc
our lifestyle has changed beyond recognition, but they can't help being cautious

Don't follow the sheep do your own thing, tell them you are a online investor and you buy and sell, don't leave the sheep drive you into their way of thinking , the government love the sheep because they vote for them and keep them in their luxury lifestyle and pay high taxes get married then pay for expensive divorce settlements to keep the solicitors in their luxury lifestyle, the system is setup to keep you poor and them rich, stay away from dead end jobs and don't conform to the treadmill of life, carry on with what your doing, and laugh at the sheep.

When you say trade, in what markets do you trade, i have been laying in the correct score market with some success but its gambling, i have traded out of some positions but i am just getting into the concept of trading and i will be looking at the tennis in ozz in the next few days.

I suppose I'm a bettor really. When I say trade, from my perspective it means changing my position, essentially in-running plays on a single market. Main "plays" are football, tennis, horseracing, rugby.

I like the "sheep" analogy-it's so true. This morning's fracas came about because being as I'm at home. they see me as some sort of "house servant". But I like to keep to very rigid hours but the family think they can interrupt whenever they want.

Do you guys lock yourself in a room? :-)

I moved into my own home and the phone is red hot with the family ringing to do errands in my car, i don't mind helping but its become overkill, i study for hours to eliminate mistakes from the past, i am usually on the (The one that got away thread) on general betting, there you can test your skill in the football lay market for fun, i had a run of 30 lays and 3 losses, but i pride myself on low liabilities, stick your head in later if you want.

I have a similar situation to you and i think the problem is family and friends don't understand the difference between gambling and trading - there is a stigma surrounding horse racing and gambling - Explain to them what you do in detail and once they have a better understanding it will become more accepted.

chances are they wouldn't have a clue anyway if you did tell them,
trying to explain trading and the exchanges to anyone who doesn't know can get very confusing,
so you've explained it and they still don't know.........

just say your an online trader....you push a few buttons.....and shuffle a bit of money around.....
keep it simple, or say you trade on the money markets online......true and accurate !

trading is just a fancy name for gambling really though. I trade a lot but every time you enter a market you are gambling that it will go the way you want it to. Too many people say "oh its okay i am trading not gambling" but they are fooling themselves in the long run. Of course you can be successful gambling/trading but it can just as easily go the other way

It depends how skilled you are + also there are a number of bots that will help reduce the risk
it sounds like you are another example of someone who doesn't fully appreciate the difference between gambling and trading

but they are fooling themselves in the long run

Again, all depends on the individual - obviously some will fail but that is simply down to their own faults

why because I disagree with you. Whether you are trading on sports exchanges, on the futures markets , when you take a position and your money is at risk - its a gamble.

maybe you haven't grasped the concept you patronising cnut

It doesn't matter what you say you do. As soon as your back's turned they'll whisper "cnut's a drug dealer". If you're a filthy trader or a fast pic player at least they think you're involved in something a bit more honourable.

Why is it on these forums, when someone just asks for a bit of advice, you always get some idiot who has to disagree with what you tell them. I didn't ask for your opinion, i don't want your opinion, and why can't you stop saying cnut???
These forums are filled with people like you who have no idea about 'PROFESSIONAL' trading but think they know it all. Idiots like you should be banned from having an opinion. bye

Mully - I left teaching a couple of years ago.I now lay horses in running on a full time basis.

I am more than happy to tell family and friends what I do.

The central point is that I am delighted that I was able to get out of teaching. As in all things you have your highs and lows betting, but I would never lie about what I do for a living. Why should you have to ?

I am not sure how other people deal with PC charges .

The way that I deal with the issue is to accept it[because I do not have a viable alternative ] and I have increased my stake size to cover the increased charges.

get over yourself you CNUT, you post on a public forum and don't expect any opinion. I wasn't abusive to you orginally , I was merely giving my opinion. If you don't want an opinion or debate I suggest you post on a private forum and trade with yourself there CNUT

imo trading or betting on the outcome of an event are essentially the same thing. The aim is to end up with more money than you started with, albeit following a different method.

Larsson is correct I believe.

In response to the original poster, unfortunately you will never convince somebody who believes that "There's only one winner in this game, the bookie" that what you are doing is in anyway a valid pursuit.

You'll always be a gambler to them, on the verge of risking the mortgage and propably friends with gangsters/criminals on the side too.

Last woman I went out with asked what I did for a living, I said "I´m a trader".
She said "what market are you in"?. I said, "horses and football".

She said "can you get my daughter a pony and my son a pair of boots"!!

I said "goodbye"!!!

In 2 weeks it'll be 10 years since I gave up my job ( YAHOOO :) )

Some family/friends still think I'm mad.

You'll just have to get used to being unconventional and all the bagage that entails from people who are unable to even think its possible.

Don't try and convince these people as they'll always be a set of people who are unconvincable, be vague, use phrases like "I'm in computers" or "Risk analysis" when asked what you do.

Also if you have a very good day/week/month don't bother shouting about it. Very very few will share your joy or pat you on the back. Most will give a very muted response or change the subject. And more people than you think will get the right hump!
