Will upgrading to Virgin's 50 MG broadband ( currently on 10MG) help with wireless connectivity?

I have an office in the garden and the signal is sometimes weak will a faster speed also mean a stronger signal ?

Office 80 ft away from the house btw

Nope. The wireless connectivity is linked to the quality of your router not the speed of your connection

Not the answer I wanted to hear but thanks for the reply. I bought a "special " router but I am still experiencing problems

To be honest it will be difficult to get a router good enough to get a good signal 80m away. You may have to think abotu gettign a seperate line installed in the office or perhaps finding a way to run a cable to it from the house

On your router you can change your channel, from 1 to 13.
This is because some channels can experience interfence and therefore some will perform better.
If yours is currently on a low number, increase this to 10 or more, reboot router and see if connection speed improved.

Any decent router should give a signal with direct line of sight over 80ft. If there is a wall or two in the way, it will reduce signal

there is a direct line of sight literally as there are only french doors between the two - router /office.

There are no channel stttings on the router itself - can i change the channel via the pc ?

No, will be a setting on router (thought all wireless routers allowed channel to be changed) What is make/model and I'l see if there is updated firmware.

just get a long ethernet cable and bury it under the grass

best course of action would be to apologise to the wife and see if she'll let you move back into the house rather than living in the outbuildings IMO

Had the same problem. My kitchen. Garden and sitting room picked up three neighbours. Kitchen around 8. Changed my channel as well as moved the router into the hall more toward the kitchen (the area with interference).

By the way, put the router on the wall near the ceiling. This was a real plus rather than around the corner in a room.

Is the office connected to your main electricity? If so www.homeplug.com is a possible solution. Better to be wired than wireless.

I moved my Router up stairs ....improved signal no end.
Report The Visionary January 13, 2010 10:30 AM GMT
homeplugs are good but only worked in one section of my house due to different wiring in different parts

Buy a long ethernet cable they're dirt cheap on ebay probably about £10 for 50 metres. I bought a 30m one for £5 to stick a fixed connection upstairs was far too long half of it is curled up under the floorboards :)

you could place the router in a large metal tin or use aluminuim foil and point this towards your shed .or get a better ariel for the router ,but if you place your router in a large biscuit tin and point towards your shed this will do the job ,i use both router and card in tins ,the card is not on the laptop its on a usb cable and the resulting signal strength is night and day ,but sounds like you really nead to go and get some cable and hard wire the shed . imo
