How come Australians cant bet with in play? This is very annoying as i have to constantly ring up. I heard there was some law by the tassie government preventing this?
The commonwealth government(federal) is responsible for the Interactive Gambling Act which prohibits gambling operators from offering in-play sports betting to Australian residents.
This is a big year for the IGA, the productivity commission's gambling inquiry will release their final report in February. In that report they will most likely recommended that the law be scrapped on the basis that it is ineffective. ie people can easily get around the law by betting on overseas websites. (Betfair is a licensed Australian company)
As much as i hope the commonwealth implements the PC's recommendations, i do believe it will be quite politically difficult to do so with the amount of anti-gambling hysteria that exists in the media and various lobby groups.
