How come Australians cant bet with in play? This is very annoying as i have to constantly ring up. I heard there was some law by the tassie government preventing this?

Maybe the oz government sees its people as something more than fodder for **ing ponces. They didn't have Thatcher over there.

The commonwealth government(federal) is responsible for the Interactive Gambling Act which prohibits gambling operators from offering in-play sports betting to Australian residents.

This is a big year for the IGA, the productivity commission's gambling inquiry will release their final report in February. In that report they will most likely recommended that the law be scrapped on the basis that it is ineffective. ie people can easily get around the law by betting on overseas websites. (Betfair is a licensed Australian company)

As much as i hope the commonwealth implements the PC's recommendations, i do believe it will be quite politically difficult to do so with the amount of anti-gambling hysteria that exists in the media and various lobby groups.

Feck, if you think Australian gambling laws are set up to protect the little man, do some googling on "pokie machine". You might come to believe that one Margaret Roberts emigrated from Sydney to the UK as a child.

All these machines are robbery Plant but notquite as barefaced as accepting bets that cannot possibly win.

And being sanctioned to do so by a government run outfit that are supposed to ensure fairness in betting.
