Hmm could be a virus. I had one which stopped all spyware/malware program from working and had to do a full system restore to**it.

The type of virus Ted is talking about is scareware that would have identified itself and told you to download the solution from its server.

Does this package run additionally, to existing AV, or is it a replacement for it?

I run it in addition to my anti-virus.

My 5 month old Vaio Laptop started hanging badly last week, tried a few things but had to take into PC world in the end, they said it's bad case of Spy-ware and had to leave it with them :(
my fault for not renewing subscription for virus protection.
