My present computer is on it's last legs and I would like to purchase a new one.

I would appreciate it if you could recommend a pc that is fast and powerful[perhaps one that you are currently using].

My budget for pc and monitor is £1,700.

Many thanks

I got my latest one from chilblast

There were a few problems early on, but they were very keen to try to sort them. One was solved by a windows update, but prior to that they sent me out a net network card in case that was the problem.

Just recently my graphics card appears to be having a problem, so they have sent me a brand new one of them also - despite the PC being nearly 2 years old.

Excellent customer service imo.

currently use a dell inspiron machine my self. Payed nothing more than 700 euro for it, 19" monitor, upgraded it my self to 2 gigs of ram.

Word of advice on buying a dell machine (or from any other of the high street retailers) - Delete all programs from the machine that have come pre-installed. Do a full registery clean up or all the shyte they have preinstalled. And DO NOT EVER use macafee or norton as your security suite (avg is free and good)

Also, try to avoid, like anal rape, windows vista - A FOOOKING NIGHTMARE. Xp is the one you want

I get mine from a second-hand dealer.
Base unit only £30.
Fast and stable running Ubuntu Linux.
If it gives trouble, throw away and replace.
If you must run M$, try Win2000. Still available on eBay, I believe.

I'll do my best, boxingthefox ;)

First need to know what you intend to do with your PC. £1700 is a sort of budget you'd need for a top of range gaming PC, apple mac video encoding workstation or a server. You can get blisteringly fast PC's with latest Core i7 for £500 or so. If you really want to spend that much, its up to you. The spotty faced ones at PC world will bite your arm off.

If its mainly for betfair / professional punting, then something costing almost half your budget will do the job, and do it well. Something supporting 2 or 3 24" monitors, at least 4/6gb fast ddr3 memory, windows 7 64bit of some flavour, raid based hard drive setup, fast i7 processor and some sort of UPS system if you want to get serious.

Otherwise take a look at the dell store, apple shop, or even a branch of PC world / dixons and look for a brand and spec you like, and then come back on here and I'll look for the best price for you. Might be worth waiting for jan sales, unless its an xmas pressie.

Merry xmas all. :)

All versions of norton prior to the latest one were slow and not as good as competition at detection, which is the most important thing imo. Newest versioni've heard is quite good, looks like they've finally listened to customers regarding speed and resources too.

Out of the free tools, I still prefer avast or avira. AVG used to be really good, but I think there are better alternatives now.

A good comparion of paid for virus checkers is here.
