whenever im in the local casino or bookies there always seems to be a disproportionate number of chinese people there. just thought about it and started to wonder why. guess they must looove the money, and it's also a cultural thing i suppose, with the chinese culture much more willing to embrace gambling. but why do so many of them make mug bets? i thought they were supposed to be good at maths?

I'm sure gambling is illegal on mainland China.. maybe it's that doing something you shouldnt/havent been able to do thing?

Yeah, it is illegal in China so it is indeed what you are not supposed to do, you want to do more. Plus the fact that most run small private businesses with a till full of cold hard cash at the end of the day which allows for temptation. Culturally, there are numerous films in China that revolve around gamilng and glorify it - a sign of wealth and power if you can splah out at the Blackjack table.

Chinese people tend to have a strong belief in luck which works differently to how western people see it. They are typically much more interested in astrology and the like than we are, it's normal to plan your life around "lucky" days and there is a good deal of faith put in lucky and unlucky numbers. They are also completely shameless about money- I was once given a thank you card in chinese which said (when translated) "Thank you, good luck, make a lot of money". I think these factors cospire to make them keen gamblers- and bad gamblers too.

They venerate the I-Ching as a holy book, which is a form of divination, based on throwing sticks on the ground.
A bit different from the Christian tradition of frowning on all gambling.
A person who believes in luck as a personal attribute, rather than random chance, is more likely to think he can beat the house.

Where do they live? Seen hindreds of em in casinos and bin in dozens of**y chippys bit never seen one comin out of a house?

Also never seen a Chinese funeral? Maybe they live forever in the back of chippys, or get chopped up when they peg out and get put in the hot n sour soup.

Another thing you dont generally here about a load of chinese kids terrorisin old women.

888 is their luckiest number.

As someone said, they love the numbers, watching numbers, looking at numbers.

When I was day-trading, these three gentlemen would come in every day, one entering the buys and sells, the other two flanking.

Once they got their order filled, in unison, they would sit back and fold their arms and watch, usually in total silence. After a few minutes, one would pull out a calculator, enter some numbers, pause and look at the screen, the calculator, the screen then pass the calculator to one of the others who would look at the calculator, the screen, the calculator then pass it to the third. All in silence.

Then depending on the play, they would sit for a few minutes our up to an hour repeating the cycle of the calculator pass around.

Finally, they would whisper to one another (even though none of us would understand them) and one would lean forward and close the position.

Success, they would shake hands and pat each other on the back.

Unsuccessful, they would study the graphs for around fifteen minutes discussing then repeat the cycle.

By lunch, they would close down.

Same thing every day.

Nova Sicko. Not quite right. Its that there are no Telephone Bookies in China. The reason for that is that there are so many Wings and so many Wongs, they might wing the wong number !!!!

Number 4 is inauspicious. It sounds like their word for "death".

Hence, no 4th floor in Chinese or Korean hotels.

In Seoul hotels there is no 13th floor either (to take account of western superstitions).

Just remembered in the deep recesses of my mind that there was a strip club in Montreal that basically was keeping women under lock and key (they worked at the club then were taken to their apartments and were never allowed out).

Found this in the archives in Montreal from 1981.
