North America region 1
UK/Europe region 2

6 territories in all.

If you bought from a dealer, odds are he programmed it for you. The maker will not.

Codes available on-line that you enter into your handset on some models.

Watch out, though. There are scamsters who sell devices that don't always work but you won't get your 35 rental fee back.

Can get a bit confusing, but basically the DVD region code identifies a DVD's compatibility with the player sold in a particular region. As already pointed out we are Region 2 in the UK. So buying a Region 1 DVD probably wouldn't work on your player.
