General Betting

Did a bet each way in my local bookies on a horse. It came second but the girl paid me out as a winner. I didn't say anything but now feel a bit bad. Anyone had anything similar?

If they say yes, then don't give it back. If they say no , they are lying so don't give it back. |

If you buy something from a shop and you leave, then realise afterwards you have been short changed you will have no chance of getting back if you went back in at a later time and say you short changed me earlier.

a girl in hills paid me £100 too much on a roulette ticket...like a prat i gave it her back thinking she might lose her job ..
she wasnt even that grateful and i never saw her in the shop again....so my advice is keep it..i would if it happened again |

I would normally be honest. I have been paid out wrong in past, not to this extent and gave it back and the guy actually had a go at me and said it was right payout and stop being a smart arse. I explained why it was wrong and gave money back, complete lack of gratitude on his part so I always thought I wouldn't bother next time but now that its happened I do feel a bit bad. Don't feel bad for hills cos they are sc*m but don't want it to cost the girl her job or anything like that

likelihood is it will never be found out. Only a small sample of bets get rechecked

if you pay it back now it will get found out (if indeed the bet gets resettled ....she could trouser the cash herself) You would put her in a predicament. Admit to her bosses she made a stupid mistake or be dishonest.
You should have paid the cash back on the spot but seeing as you didn't best all round if you keep it. |

If I don't give it back I will donate money to charity. Would far rather cancer research put it to use than hills. I would like to know how likely it was that the error will get found out, I don't know how settlement works with these bookies. Also is it likely to have any repercussions for the girl? If it was an independent I would have given it back 100%. Its a big difference that its a big firm, they can swallow £200 without any problem at all and like people have said in the posts, they are quite happy to take money off people who can't afford to lose it

I was a bookie manager for five years. Admittedly it was a long time ago and new technology is in place but I never got a bet back from Head Office in five years. What the security department did was go through a fortnights business every 6 months or so.

I once paid out a £5rfc as a £10sfc. Only realised when I was cashing up because the bloke wrote the correct returns on the back of the slip. I also settled a footie acca as a winner muddling up Brentford with Bradford. Either that or the Hills initial screen info was incorrect and it was their mistake not mine (never quite understood how me and the punter could have both checked the results off the screen and both made exactly the same mistake)

Hard to comment without knowing how much she handed you. I'd hazard that their security department audit all bets with a payout of over £250, for example. Was this the case here? Their security department can access every shop till in the country centrally, so if it was big enough to trigger their interest, they'll have looked at it, seen the mistake, and she'll have been told. Would have to be a mistake costing a few hundred or more before being sacked came into the question, and when bets have large payouts, surely no worker doesn't check that the bet was entered into EPoS correctly. You were mispaid because the bet was put into EPoS as a 'win' - rather than because it was worked out on the spot, for example (so the system expected to pay out the amount you received - she won't have shown a cash deficit). All re-translations and amended payments on bets are flagged up for security purposes, so if her mistake went unnoticed, amending the payment - even in their favour - would flag up a mistake she made (if it was low enough to escape the radar anyway). If the payment you received was say £80 it will forever go unnnoticed. She keeps here job, you were lucky. Keep the money. Does that help? :) |

Guys, thanks for all your posts. I have still not made my mind up 100%. I'd love to know if the error has been noticed. I think its probably more likely it wasn't than it was but I wouldn't stake much on it. Thanks in particular to CLYDEBANK for your helpful posts.
Mully - The girl was definitely not fit. So its 11-2 in favour of people saying to keep the money so far. Anyone else got an opinion, please update the score. Keep 11 Give it back 2 |

In a casino I always used to give it back, it's on multiple cameras and the staff would probably have a mare finding it and they'd identify who made the mistake.
In the bookies, I wouldn't dream of giving back a penny unless there was some reason to believe that the staff would get the sack. In reality they say the staff will have to pay it back or get in trouble to play on your conscience, but they don't actually worry about the staff, they're just terrified that they might end up doing a few quid. Bear in mind that they encourage losers to keep playing and cut winners off nearly instantly and ask yourself if these people would give your money back if the roles were reversed (They wouldnt) |

*I'd always give it back in a normal shop,it's specifically highstreet bookies I wouldnt. I even email bookies online if they make errors in my favour.
