2 perverse penalty calls in 2/2 PL away games so far. One already admitted, the other to follow shortly

Raya and Guimaraes fantastic for superb Arsenal.

BBC MofD: Ashley Williams & Thomas Frank both agree with Arteta the penalty should never have been given. Sunderland player held Arsenal defender left shoulder pulling him down and on top of him. Correct decison should have been free kick Arsenal.

Arsenal should have been awarded a penalty at Aston Villa for Ian Maatsen's challenge on Bruno Guimaraes, the Premier League's Key Match Incidents Panel has ruled. The KMI Panel added that the Villa defender should also have received a second yellow card for the foul, and been sent off.

When a defender has both arms around a forward in the penalty box they always run the risk of giving away a penalty.

A question Arsenal apologists need to answer is; for what reason did their defender have both arms around the Sunderland forward?

Arsenal needn't have worried though, VAR ignored Raya leaving his line before the ball was struck.

Funniest incident in the game was Bruno Guimaraes going down towards the end, as if shot, and not being sure if he was on the pitch or not so rolling 2 metres back on to the pitch before continuing to writhe Laugh

He's only been there a month and he's already a seasoned Arsenal cheat.

Goalie came off his line to save it by look of it too, but probably best ignored.

VAR check and are watching keepers moving off of their lines for all pens, if you slow the video down to it's slowest speed and wait for contact with the ball, Raya's right foot is on the line

Yeah, really need the goal line camera to be certain, and maybe there's no clear view of that available (that I can see.)

His foot is off line but could be still on the plain of the line, so he might be OK.
Report Storm Alert • September 14, 2026 8:57 AM BST
Raya's right foot is on the goal line when the penalty is stuck, TNT clearly showed that on freeze frame,

The goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot touching, in line with, or behind the goal line at the moment the ball is kicked. They cannot stand completely in front of or behind the goal line.

Mikel Arteta has refused to divulge the details of Arsenal’s meeting with Pro Ref after they complained about the penalty awarded to Sunderland last week.

It is understood that the referees’ body has been in touch with the Premier League champions after they requested clarification over the decision at the Stadium of Light in Arsenal’s 2-0 win.

“This is a conversation that will remain private as usual,” said Arteta.

Asked whether he wanted Pro Ref to apologise like it did to Manchester United after Erling Haaland’s goal was incorrectly awarded in last week’s Manchester derby, he said: “It’s not about the apology, it’s just agreeing that the decision should have been different or not. Maybe they have a different opinion and try to improve and move forward together.”

Sounds like Pro Ref stuck to their guns.

This is the perfect post that epitomises what its is to be an Arsenal fan, win f.a for  20 odd years, moan about it constantly, win once and they are now the best team of the last 50 years. The prem is theirs' to win this year and if anywhere near as good as their fans think they should be winning things for the next 5 years at least.......

Sunderland penalty vs. Arsenal incorrect but ‘not clear and obvious error’, league panel finds

Sunderland’s penalty against Arsenal earlier this month was incorrectly awarded but was “not a clear and obvious error” for the video assistant referee (VAR) to overturn, a Premier League panel has found.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta described referee John Brooks’ decision to award the spot kick as “unacceptable” in his side’s two-goal win at the Stadium of Light.

The penalty was awarded early in the second half, with Brooks deciding that Sunderland’s Dan Ballard had been fouled by Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa. The two centre-backs were grappling in the penalty area, and Konsa was adjudged to have pulled Ballard to the ground after a long throw-in.

The Premier League’s five-person Key Matches Incidents (KMI) Panel ruled unanimously that the on-field decision was incorrect, as although Konsa made an “untidy challenge … initially (Konsa) had arms around Ballard”, it was determined that “Ballard engages in a holding action which pulls Konsa onto him so they both fall to the floor”.

However, the panel judged that the non-VAR intervention and decision not to overturn the decision was correct. Three of the five panel judges determined it was “not a clear and obvious error, given the combined actions from both players”, while two panelists disagreed and thought the decision should have been overturned.

David Raya saved Enzo Le Fee’s resulting penalty kick, before Bruno Guimaraes scored Arsenal’s opener just two minutes later. Arteta’s side won the game 2-0, with a late penalty of their own through Bukayo Saka.

The KMI Panel is an independent group of five members, consisting of three former players or coaches, one representative from the Premier League, and one from Pro Ref, the organisation responsible for refereeing in England.

The win at Sunderland maintained Arsenal’s 100 per cent winning start to the season, which ended the following week with a three-goal loss at Brighton & Hove Albion. Sunderland are 14th with four points from five matches.
