The first time I ever saw Shakira, was in my Spanish textbook at school in 1999/2000, she was a big Colombian star even then, but not known in the English speaking world, not sure why she appeared in that either, maybe some kind of clever promotion as the English transition came not long after that.

There was a time when Argentina didn't like Messi, in part because they were unfamiliar with him given he never played club football in Argentina, in part because he always did it for Barcelona but never did it for Argentina and in part because Maradonna did, that's only all really completely changed in the last 3-4 years.
