Uruguay were poor the last time I saw them. I think it was against England.

i wonder what the highest number of goals in a game will be
there's too many teams and too many ways to qualify. So, there's little jeopardy. A win against a weak team in your 1st game and you're almost through.

It's not just about qualifying though, it's about position and what that means for the next round, i.e who you could face and the potential route that brings.

One of the reasons why South American sides are over-estimated at World Cups is because in South American qualifying, all teams are used to the opposition defending for their lives, they're painful to watch and games generally low scoring , just like club football all over the continent - 63% of the qualifying games finished unders, Uruguay themselves had 5 0-0's from 18 matches - So they seem to be surprised when they turn up to a World Cup and have teams from Europe, Africa and Asian actually trying to swarm all over them, they're not used to that kind of defensive work, they're used to slow build up play and referees blowing up every 5 second when a players rolls around looking for a foul. They have to come out swinging now.
sa should at least get a draw from here. bielsa just cant cut it at wcs. remember argentina over twenty years ago. bombed out at the group stage
Uruguay teams of the recent past would bite, gouge, scratch and dive their way to wins. I'm not even sure this lot have enough about them to do that. I wouldn't rule them out, but they seem to be softer than previous generations. Not that I would condone sh*'housery of course.
I wouldn't rule out an equaliser, but wouldn't back it either.
Saudis need to keep the ball and slow the game down if they want to get the win. Prices barely moved 15 minutes in to the second half such is the clear dominance so far (all be it no clear cut chances so far)

They're doing a bad job of slowing play and keeping the ball though which could be their undoing

What has been very clear to see so far and is following the pattern of recent years is the clear decline in quality on view, we've never been as close as we are now to maybe seeing a winner from outside of the the usual suspects.
its not quality duffy its players playing with straighjackets on. no freedom to express or to try something out of the ordinary to make something happen. everything is to a tactical spreadsheet. its like watching robots

and the equaliser changes nothing for me. as dull as dishwater and painful to watch

Plenty of time to hedge winner. Often teams keep possession or time waste to improve their chances of victory. Saudi couldn't string 2 passes together this half and were begging to lose their lead
they had the right strategy toad. if they had pushed forward they might have conceded earlier. even though they eventually did concede they will probably still get a point and will be more than happy with that. concede an equaliser earlier in the half and the chance they lose increases

Who's going to win the World Cup outside of the typical faves and heavyweight footballing nations, nearest in the betting is Morocco and they're 40/1 which is miles away from having a realistic chance.
Brazil have definitely dropped massively in standard though, from Rivaldo/Ronaldo/Ronaldinho to Thiago/Raphina/Vinicus, is a massive comedown. They didn't need to push forward, but they used no dark arts of killing time and much more unforgiveable couldn't keep the ball for 5 seconds by passing it between them. Were in a rush all half to give the ball back on the rare times they got it lol
is this ref allergic to his cards. so many fouls from sa and not a card in sight

uruguay pulled their finger out way too late. could have won this easily if there had been this intensity from the start
Yeah. Crazy the difference in halves. Saudi keeper very solid and Uruguay didn't show much quality in the final moments. Fun match given the first 20 minute were so slow
makes me laugh toad. this is supposed to be elite football. the best there is and yet you see it time and time again where a team just goes through the motions passes the ball about with no real purpose for three quarters of a match. its insane. play properly from the start, get into a lead and then slow down not the other way around. its so obvious
Yeah it's very complacent especially when it happens in the knock out stages where it's do or die !!
