"He lost 1 million while looking for 85k. Gambling is evil"
"bro just lost his life savings, his wife probably left him too"
"If you bet $1m for a potential $85k profit you deserve to lose."
"This is why I only bet with $3 Maximum, its always the games you think are easy wins which always cost you the most"
"But it is stupid to bet if your estimated earning is not gonna be half of the original amount.
Gambling with 1M to win 85K is not smart at all.
This is an addiction.
The person should seek help."
My personal take, advice, if he can somehow scrape together another million, he can lump on Morocco to smash Scotland and he'll quickly paper over this damage

Agreed sofaking. There's plenty of sharks out there who can stand risks like this. On the flip side, there was plenty to be made by taking a chance on Cabo pulling off the shock.

account created 10 days ago, first two bets on @Polymarket placed just 3 hours ago

Which inevitably leads to the conspiracy nuts to pounce..
"Did we just have the first World Cup game completely **** for money on Polymarket?
"Fishalive" made ~$9 million by betting on Spain not winning against Cape Verde.
> First trade: Bet $4.5M against Spain 8 minutes before the game began
> Everything came from a network of freshly funded Coinbase wallets with no previous activity
This is just a conspiracy theory, but it's really odd."

War bets Polymarket allows bets on armed conflicts, which has led to members of armed forces placing bets on operations, impacts on war reporting, and bets about nuclear war. War bets may rely on classified military information.[3] According to the Anti-Corruption Data Collective, 52% of military action long-shot bets—defined as those worth $2,500 or more with odds at or below 35%—are successful, compared to 25% for politics bets and 14% of all bets.[3]
Russo-Ukrainian War During the Russo-Ukrainian war, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) indicated on a map that Russian forces had advanced into downtown Myrnohrad on November 14, 2025, despite no evidence to support such an advance. After a bet that the city would be captured by Russia by November 15 was closed, the fictitious advance was removed from the map. The next day, a Polymarket user accused ISW of fraud because its maps did not reflect the actual extent of Russian advances. Ukrainian DeepState in turn accused Polymarket of improperly using its maps and data to fuel bets.
2026 United States attack on Venezuela A newly created Polymarket account netted over $400,000 in January 2026 from positions held on Nicolás Maduro being ousted from office and U.S. military action against Venezuela before January 31. These bets came under scrutiny on social media for potential insider trading due to them being placed before the 2026 United States intervention in Venezuela was publicly announced.[45][46][2] A U.S. Special Forces soldier was later arrested and charged. He is alleged to have had access to classified information and been involved in the planning and execution of the raid.[47] Polymarket stated it had cooperated with the investigation.[48]
Nuclear war bets Polymarket came under scrutiny after users placed nearly $850,000 in bets on nuclear detonations following the beginning of the 2026 Iran war. The bet had been first listed in November 2025.[49] Polymarket removed the bet shortly after the majority of bets were placed.[50][51]
Twelve-Day War and 2026 Iran War There have been multiple cases of suspiciously timed trades related to the 2026 Iran war on Polymarket.[5]
Users who had placed large bets related to an Iranian missile strike in March 2026 are alleged to have harassed and threatened Israeli journalist Emanuel Fabian of The Times of Israel in an attempt to pressure him to alter his reporting and influence the market's outcome. Fabian refused, reported the threats to police, and Polymarket subsequently condemned the behavior and banned those involved, prompting broader criticism of prediction markets over ethical risks and incentives tied to real-world events.[52][53] The incident drew condemnation from Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which reiterated that the safety of journalists is "non-negotiable" and that all actors must respect press freedom and the right to information.[54] It also coincided with renewed political scrutiny in the United States, where lawmakers, including Representative Mike Levin, cited similar concerns about betting on war-related events while promoting legislation to restrict or ban such markets, arguing that they could incentivize profiteering from violence and misuse of sensitive information.[55]
Multiple members of the Israeli Air Force have been interrogated or indicted regarding bets on the timing of Israeli and American strikes on Iran during the Twelve-Day War.[56] An air force officer gave information on the 2025 strikes to a colleague and the two allegedly earned $244,000.[57] They continued betting on strikes in Yemen and the questions "Will Israel strike Iran by the end of January?" and "Will Israel strike Iran by the end of March 2026?" and were eventually indicted for "delivering secret information".[57] A different crewmember was interrogated for placing bets on the Twelve-Day War, allegedly earning $46,000.[56] He stated during his interrogation that "the entire squadron is on Polymarket, the entire air force is betting."[56]
Only an absolute mug is getting involved with this company.

Of course mesmerised. ALL sites need to be treated with Xtreme caution until we're dealing with near certainty. I heard plenty dodgy stories about that particular site early on. Given they're gaining so much traction lately, I figured maybe they'd cleaned up their act and became legit&secure?? Either way, it won't affect any of us who have no business with them.

spain drifted on here before the off by about three ticks and it would have taken a lot of money to make that happen. for whatever reason, plenty thought cape verde could avoid defeat and they turned out to be right

I noticed a drift from 1.08 to 1.11 at KO but didn't read much into it. But it was apparent after a few minutes that they were not at it, for whatever reason. I still thought they would win until 35-40 minutes when they seemed unable to work out how to beat Cape Verde, and unable to raise the tempo.

from half an hour onwards des it was the definition of madness. doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. cape verde were clearly expecting spain to play the way they did and set up accordingly. all spain needed to do was change it up a little by trying a few shots from distance and a few long balls and then cape verde would have been unsure about where to be on the pitch. as it was, it was easy enough for them. set up with all outfield players inside the box or just outside it, keep a rigid shape and take a chance that spain couldnt find a way through. which was what happened

THIS was the stats with Spain LACKING the proper press, speed of play+movement and width that would've increased the chance of breakthru x3.
We can all agree that against such an ultra-defensive unit, Spain didn't execute the play that was best suited to toppling it. But it doesn't have to be any deeper than that. Don't be the fool who fails to keep a proper perspective.

Their struggles from the start were highlighted by how little they found centre-forward Mikel Oyarzabal, who became the first player to play the first 30 minutes of a World Cup match (since 1966) without touching the ball even once.
Spain did eventually manage to find him a little more often, and in the end racked up 27 shots totalling 2.29 xG, though too many of them were pot shots from distance. And when they did get a clear sight of goal, they were let down by some poor finishing, particularly from Oyarzabal and Ferran Torres.
This game extended Spain’s playing time without finding the net at the World Cup to almost three full matches, their last goal coming 11 minutes into their penultimate at the 2022 edition, vs Japan. They then failed to score against Morocco in the last 16, meaning they have now had 49 shots and completed 2,500 passes since they last scored a World Cup goal.
It was far from the case that Spain playing badly was the only reason this game ended goalless. Cape Verde’s defenders were magnificent. Borges made a match-high five tackles; his central-defensive partner Pico Lopes led the game for clearances, with 11. The team’s exceptional discipline is shown in the fact that despite Spain having almost three-quarters of the ball, Cape Verde’s players committed only one foul – the fewest by a team in a World Cup match on record (since 1966).
