Was minded to post this after reading some comments on the films/ tv thread but made more sense not to derail it as it's the only thread on the football forum that consistently gains input...(make of that what you will)
!. Ricky Gervais 2. Kevin Bridges 3. Peter Kay (would be higher but for excessive reuse of material over prolonged period)
I'd probably swap 1 & 2 around but agree with them both. Don't really have a 3rd at present. There's a few that run hot and cold with me, but couldn't nail one down to make the list out of the current crop.

a bit worrying in some ways..I'd have been struggling for a 4th...not enough mainstream exposure these days ? not as many good stand up's in existence ?

I often try out stand-ups on Netflix, but very few keep me going to the end, but I'll keep trying. Brits definitely have the best SOH though, so probably looking for another.

I remember watching a college comedy show back in the 80's on TV. There was this one guy who had me in stitches... soooo funny. Found out later it was Rik Mayall doing his stand up Kevin Turvey. Brilliant.

maybe biased by age but I wouldn't have any of those near the top 3.
Billy Connolly for me, is no.1 by a distance. I'll have to think about a 2nd and 3rd, but they'd probably be interchangeable with another 3 or 4.

Bernard was brilliant, told jokes about anyone and anything, as it should be.
Watched lots of USA comedians in the 80s, so have to mention Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor and Joan Rivers, all totally fearless. Liked Andy Kaufmann too, completely alternative.

I'd add Bill Burr to the OP's first 2.... Ricky Gervais and Kevin Bridges..
Greg Giraldo, Bernard Manning, Barry Humphries and Joan Rivers were able to make me chuckle too, when alive.
Chris Rock and Dave Chappell are clever and interesting.
Funny thing is, I can feel quite offended by unfunny attempts at comedy.

High profile Bernard Manning was best I seen magnificent. I think a lot these charlatans nowadays are dung and people just laugh because they have had a few drinks and paid a lot of money.

Used to be good (seems a theme with many comedians to be fair) but saw his recent stuff and it seemed awful - not at all funny.
Like say, some others go that way too - Jack Dee same, loved him, then he seemed totally unfunny later on...
Can't believe Mickey Flanagan not mentioned yet.Used to be good (seems a theme with many comedians to be fair) but saw his recent stuff and it seemed awful - not at all funny.Like say, some others go that way too - Jack Dee same, loved him, then he s
One of the funniest guys I ever met.I was likely one ofthe guys he bunked off early to play golf with. One rainy day he did a stand up, impromptu, at the golfclub and I never enjoyed comedy as much.https://www.comedy.co.uk/features/comedy_chronicles/p
I got persuaded to go to Micky Flanagan, against my better judgement I hasten to add.
I went to the bar at the interval and stayed there until it was over.
Emo Philips is the best live comedian I've seen.I got persuaded to go to Micky Flanagan, against my better judgement I hasten to add.I went to the bar at the interval and stayed there until it was over.

I heard Mick on the radio earlier, still going strong and not afraid to tell his (harmless) un PC jokes. Still playing the club circuit at 76 years of age.
Bit of a rarity these days, a funny scouser

brentford Apr 26 22:12 ...going have to check out Werbie's recs as haven't seen much of them..vaguely recognise names.
Please do, those three are fantastic with the off-beat and unexpected one liners; Tim Vine does similar stuff

I just watched 20+ minutes of Sean Lock (Lockipedia), didn't laugh once. I then watched a 4 minute clip of Werbie's Milton Jones... laughed at almost every joke, some of which were very clever. I will watch more.

ok Werbie you have a point. A brief trip through all 3 of your selections (Milton Jones, Stew Francis and Gary Delaney) gave me a good laugh tonight. Thanks for those.
