Correct result.
In any sport, if you refuse to play when ordered to, you should forfeit the match. |

I saw the other team win, they celebrated and enjoyed it.
Bit late to act now, like stripping lance Armstrong and rocky balboa But better late than never. |

It's never too late.
Olympic medals get redistributed all the time - years later! |

Farcical but it sets a very important and necessary precedent to avoid it happening again.

Terrible decision. Senegal should move to the Euros in protest. It would be better for them anyway because the bulk of the players play in Europe.
|
|
By:
Absolutely farcical, not so much the decision, but to wait months before doing it.
As usual its the punters that lose (plenty of us backed Morocco and lost). |

Even worse for 3-0 Morocco backers

Senegal won the tournament FWIW (which is not very much). Nobody can change anything except meaningless stuff like the entry in Wiki. Probably not the last time it's "overturned" either.
Armstrong won all those Tours too. |

Is England still the World Cup Winners of 1966? I'm not sure about that Russian linesman?
|
|
By:
It is a farce but what have Senegal done wrong , they were allowed to carry on and play by the referee . I get the argument a team should forfeit the game if they walk off but the point is the referee didnt and let them carry on .

The 1966 World cup final should be replayed, some people where on the pitch ,they thought it was over

My sympathies are with Senegal here. The corruption around the AFCON tournament was so blatant you could see what was coming a mile off. Diaz had been chucking himself down in the box all through the tournament expecting penalties and usually getting them. I predicted what would happen before it happened. And I'm not psychic. I just saw what Diaz had been up to all tournament, and was pretty certain he would do it again in the final. Senegal were being set up to lose, and I, for one, applaud them for standing up to it. If flagrant corruption like we saw in the AFCON tournament is never challenged, it will just get worse.

Anyone been paid on Morocco bets by Sportsbook? Sporting Life website says they are paying but not seen it myself!
|
|
By:
It is probably the correct decision.
it should have been the decision on the night but that might have put the referee and other officials in danger. Players trying to change decisions, and that team's officials trying to change decisions is not acceptable. |
|
By:
I said at the time the ref should've abandoned the match as soon as Senegal players left the field.
Refusing to play when ordered to in any sport usually means you forfeit the match. |
|
By:
Yeah but once they let them back on and played it out they should stand by that. It might be appealed and overturned maybe.
I said at the time that it seemed that Morocco had agreed to miss the penalty to get them to play on and it looked like it. They are complicit if that's the case and shouldn't want a walkover. |
|
By:
I get your point, the ref fked up. He should've abandoned the game.
I suppose it would set a terrible precedent if results get altered after a game has finished. |

its possible, though 99.99% unlikely, that arsenal and liverpool will gain a couple of titles each

On 24 October 2014, UEFA awarded Serbia a 3–0 walkover win against Albania on the grounds that Albania had been at fault for refusing to resume the match. Serbia was, however, given a three-point deduction, and ordered to play its next two homes games behind closed doors. In addition both teams were fined €100,000.[7] The decision was appealed by both Serbia and Albania,[8] but the decision was upheld by UEFA.[9][10] Both associations then filed further appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Sport,[11][12] and on 10 July 2015, the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected the appeal entirely filed by the Football Association of Serbia, but upheld in part the appeal filed by the Albanian Football Association. The CAS ruled that the match abandonment was caused by "security lapses of the organizers and acts of violence exerted on the Albanian players by the Serbian fans and at least one security steward", and therefore reversed the result, awarding a 3–0 victory to Albania. The points deduction to Serbia, fines, and order to play Serbia home games without a crowd were left intact.[13]

I know it's a different situation but I think they'll be reinstated myself. They didn't walk off and not continue, they walked off and were allowed to continue. The disputed penalty was taken and missed. They did deserve to be disqualified, but the referee and officials were fully aware of the breach and gave the go ahead for the match to continue.

Lille v Manchester Utd (2007)
Ryan Giggs' late free-kick for Manchester United, scored while Lille were still arranging their wall, led the Lille players to walk off in a Champions League last-16 tie. Having gathered by the touchline, they eventually returned to complete the match. |

Turns out Morocco walked off the pitch in the 1976 (i think) AFCON for the same reason and they came back on, played it out and won.
