just watching match of the day and both Newcastle and Burnley had off side given against them when the offending player had been pushed/jostled by the opposing team while waiting for a free kick….for Newcastle that was a disallowed goal…..should that not be picked up by VAR….not sure if the offence would be termed as a foul or unsportsmanlike so maybe the result would be for a re-take of the free kick…but it looks like a cheat that has crept under the radar…

Totally agree; unfortunately the inconsistency of referees and VAR certain teams will get away with it and others will get penalised

Forwards to it to defenders too, then it's called being clever. It's a counter to the ploy of attackers standing in offside positions before a free-kick. Quite smart and not a foul at all imo but can't be a foul under current rules if the kick hasn't been taken as the ball is not in play.

Is the ball not in play from the first whistle to the end of the half?
Report SirNorbertClarke February 22, 2026 12:33 PM GMT
All kinds of shenanigans take place before the ball is in play at corners. Defenders are allowed to shirt pull and hug attackers with complete impunity

Var cannot get involved unless there is a red card
or it is a subjective offside and sends ref to monitor.

If players want to wrestle and refs want to allow them
then it'll happen more often.

Newcastle free kick

If a player is pushed offside, then don't take the free kick

Simples.

Happens too quickly……it could be a penalty or free kick from a different position if that behaviour was deemed to be a foul….I don’t see how it can’t be to be fair…

Can't be a free kick or penalty if ball is not in play.

It's a bit of a conundrum, and Dan Burn has said
he does it to others.

You can get booked, but refs don't do much booking
of this wrestling.

If players can wait to see which way goalie moves
on a pen, then, surely they can pause if a player
is pushed offside

Can a player verbally abuse the Ref when the ball is not in play?
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- February 22, 2026 7:34 PM GMT
They can, and it can be sanctioned by yellow or red.
Then ball comes back into play as previously scheduled.

I've even seen players red carded after the game for abusing ref.

as paddy would say why did you push him offside, well if he was stood onside in front of me I,d have pushed him away from the goal not towards it,arsenal used to, as a tactic pull/drag players in to offside positions
Report Winja February 23, 2026 5:33 PM GMT
point taken YHTL....still seems a cheat that should be looked at by the FA in my opinion as when it is blatant just seems unfair...
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- February 23, 2026 5:36 PM GMT
Oh, they can take a look, and change laws, if they can get wording correct.

Pushing a player offside, he's not offside... would make sense.

Watching MU and Everton right now. They need a wrestling referee not a football one. This manhandling in the goal area is getting out of hand and a player is going to get seriously hurt if it continues. Pushing an opponent with a hand should be a foul where ever it happens. Fernandez needs a yellow at least.
Report Bish Bosher February 23, 2026 9:43 PM GMT
How about this for a rule change; from the moment the ref blows the whistle at the start of the match till the final whistle; any pulling or pushing or as you say manhandling; is deemed as a free kick or penalty regardless if the ball is in play or not; that would soon stop the wrestling matches that are going on
Report lurka February 24, 2026 12:00 AM GMT
How about the player being pushed offside not going for the ball like Burn did? He'd have likely been caught offside anyway without the push but at least he wouldn't have known he was offside then. Bit thick of him to go for that ball or even move towards it.
Report lurka February 24, 2026 12:03 AM GMT
He's standing in an offside position + gets pushed towards goal. He doesn't know who's behind him, one of his teammates could get on the end of it but he 100% has to know he'll ruin any chance of a goal if he goes for it. Then starts complaining and will do the same defending a FK in his own box.
