Football league substitutions according to AI

1965-66: One substitute permitted (only for injury).
1967-68: One substitute permitted (for any reason).
1987-88: Two substitutes permitted for any reason in league matches.
1994-95: Increased to three substitutes.

The honour of being the first substitute in top class football was accorded to Richard Gottinger, who came on for West Germany in their 3-0 victory over Saarland in Stuttgart on 11 October 1953. West Germany qualified for that World Cup and went on to win it – the first of their world titles – but those 37 minutes were to be Gottinger’s only involvement. He never played for his country again.

Geoff Hurst played County cricket for Essex, he only
made first team once, as a batsman he scored 0 runs
in 2 innings, only out once, and he took a catch.
4 years later he scored 3 goals in world Cup final at Wembley.
As England won World cup

In 1972 Viv Richards played football for Antigua in qualifiers
for 1974 World Cup, he was a striker. 7 years later he hit 3 sixes
in a knock of 138* in final at lord's as West Indies won World cup

Yeah great save from Montgomery but didn't have much else to do.

Saarland was under French rule at the time, following ww2, so
were not included in West Germany, so had own team...

An unwanted record for Arsenal
This was the first time in Premier League history that a side starting the day bottom of the table avoided defeat to the side starting the day top despite trailing by two or more goals

Mateusz Kochalski saved 7 big chances vs Newcastle, the most by any goalkeeper in a single #UCL match this season. And lost 6-1.

I think it was Somerset that had Richards, Botham and Joel Garner?  Botham visited my secondary school, not long after his Headingly heroics.  Only famous person other than Leon Brittan that ever did.  So for that I give him max credit!

Botham used to play in defence for Scunthorpe United too iirc.

Stuart Leary was an exceptional dual performer in the 50s and 60s - scored 182 goals for Charlton & QPR as a centre forward.

Also had a 20 year county cricket career at Kent, scoring over 16,000 runs and taking 146 wickets.

Tragically took his own life at the age of 55 in 1988, his body was found at the foot of Table Mountain , apparently having jumped out of a cable car Sad

Here are a few uninteresting stats
In the 1986 World Cup final, Argentina V West Germany, won 3-2 by Argentina, the five goals were scored by players wearing off numbered shirts.
The last player to score in the 1982 World Cup, Alessandro Altobelli, scored when Italy won 3-1, was a substitute, came on, and was later substituted.
And in the next World Cup Altobelli was the first player to score - last to score in 1982, first to score in 1986.

Arsenal have taken a league-high total of 117 minutes to restart games from corners in the Premier League this season; indeed, they also have the longest average delay of restart from corners (44 seconds).

As of Dec 2024, of the 16 teams that took part in the 1966 World, England had fewer survivors than any other country. There were 118 still alive from the 352 squad members, with France (11) and Mexico leading the way. West Germany, Portugal, USSR, Spain, Switzerland and Brazil all have nine.

Are you sure that stat is correct 1tp ?  There are 380 games in an EPL season (462 games for the first 3 years) so only an average of two losing HT/winning FT games in a season sounds incredibly low.

For example - Last two Everton games - Beat Fulham 2-1 after losing 1-0 at HT, then lost to Bournemouth 2-1 after leading 1-0 at HT.
A couple of weeks back Chelsea beat W Ham 3-2 after losing 2-0 at HT.

One of my old favourites which has gone now but still quite amazing bearing in mind there success in previous World Cups is that the 2002 World Cup final was the first time Brazil and west Germany/germany had ever met in the World Cup.

Regarding Clydebank's post about substitutes...
In England the first substitute used, I guess in 1967 ish, not googled, was Keith Peacock for Charlton...he went on to make the club's highest ever number of appearances, unless it's been beaten since
Dixie will know him well as he went on to manage the Gills in the 80s, plus Charlton and others
He is the father of Gavin Peacock, of Chelsea and Newcastle fame
Gavin went to my secondary school, about 10 years after me...OK, that's not an amazing stat...and now lives in Canada and is a lay preacher

Close Reg, August 65 was Keith's claim to fame. The Charlton goalie got injured early on and so Keith came on.

He was well liked at Gills when he managed them, known for his sheepskin coat Grin He was in charge for the Gills/Everton FA Cup trilogy in 1984 which had it ended differently would most likely have meant the glory years for the toffees of the mid 80s would not have happened.

Gavin was on the local BBC news last year - he had just come over from Canada for a one year stint as Pastor of Bethersden Baptist church (near Ashford), not sure if the year is up yet. Had a good career and seemed very content with life, good on him.

Sam Bartram made the most appearances for Charlton , Keith Peacock is the highest number for an outfield player
