The trends come and go, it's the first season with a real return to long throws (across the teams), less high pressing, less playing out from the back..more direct goal kicks and out of the hand I would guess (though don't have stats to hand)..some of these options have been under utilised in recent years so I don't mind their return to some extent.
The over importance of set pieces (especially corners) could easily be tempered with better refereeing, the keeper is regularly being obstructed or interfered with and approx half if not more of the players in the box are not showing any interest in playing the initial ball - any reset on interpreting the rules probably requires an ahead of season reset..my sense is there is a little less grappling un European and International games than the PL. |

maybe they include non attending season ticket holders or are their viewing areas around bars that on a cold night some stay inside (defer to the N'castle lads on that)

HNY PP (and all).
Seems a bit of a stat thread so was staggered to see Marseille get 11 corners (vs PSG) in the 1st half hour, v rare and could even get near 20 in the match. |

basically this season in general has been the worse in premiership history.
the premier league will be calling for emergency meetings soon because the brand is dead, football is destroyed in this country. things such as darts and baller league are on the pull for greater audience's. Everyone is fed up with the premier league teams are reporting higher attendance figures then are actually attending as such is the distain with the league, empty seats everywhere, atmosphere down, open play goals massive decline. its the worse season in premier league history i can remember. the footballing terrorist whom turned this more like American football have killed the beautiful game. however non league football and grassroots are seeing far greater attendances, because the football is more raw and entertaining |

And yet the threads continue about Premier league..
and baller league and non league threads dont appear. Football at sjp has been superb this season. |

Well I suppose if you watch the EFL a lot of those games tend to have an opening goal from a set piece. Then the game might open up.
I imagine there will be some sort of 'regression to the norm' with all these set piece goals in the EPL. Most teams will concentrate on them next season which might serve to thwart the likes of Arsenal and their horrible set piece mastermind Nicolas Jover. Only thing is they dont have VAR in the EFL. So get on the unders? |

Despite that cráp tonight, the PL is only getting more popular. France and Spain are playing their Super cups in the middle east tonight to try and drum up a few quid and everyone was watching arsenal v pool.

You have to wonder how long that giant overseas EPL tv deal is going to last if Arteta & Slot are going to continue to serve up something akin to Italian Serie A circa 1980.
Thats 1 goal in 2 games between the pair of them. Traditionalists might laugh at the Spanish taking the SuperCopa to the middle east but if the standard of the EPL carries on like this it won't be long before Liv v the Gooners comes direct from Foxboro Massachussets some sunday night. Early morning Monday in the UK of course. ![]() |

Me too. I thought of Serie A too as I followed the game.

Yeah, the Italians were kings of European football for about twenty years.
They couldnt really compete with Real's Galacticos nor Pep's Barca sides. So they fell off for a few years. But I have a feeling, that football may be heading back into that beautiful Italian tactical wheelhouse before too long.. |

Saka is one of the most exciting players in the league, but there were several times where he was simply trying to win a corner rather than attack the box. So dull.

Richard Masters, the embattled CEO of the EPL, should be on the dog and bone to Martinelli this morning thanking him for last night.
Because despite the 0-0 draw the only sports story in town is Ars v Liv. You dont need goals and great games these days. Controversy will do just as well. Its a marvellous time to be alive. |

Someone did a breakdown of stoppages in the Liverpool Newcastle game from the weekend.
We definitely need some proper regs coming in to set max time taken for each set piece Time wasted on: (Liverpool - Newcastle) Goal kicks - 01:54 - 04:08 Free kicks - 08:26 - 07:20 Throw Ins - 04:00 - 03:45 Corners - 04:33 - 05:38 Other - 02:34 - 08:17 Total - 21:27 - 29:08 I think there were ten minutes added time in total, while the ball was out of play for 50 minutes. I don't think the total time is the issue though. You're not improving this by adding 25 minutes to each half. The point is the disruptions. It's just ruining it as entertainment. Another throw in, another 30 seconds to wait and I may as well get my phone out and see what's happening... |

Perhaps a study of Australian Rules Football would help.
Examples. If a free kick is awarded but the ball is in the possession of the defending team, they must return the ball immediately direct to the attacking player at the point where the kick is to be taken. No ifs, no buts. Failure to do so accurately and immediately = 50m advance up the pitch. The defending team must retreat immediately to the point (The Mark) indicated by the referee. No ifs, no buts. Failure = 50m. Attacking team must restart within a reasonable time. From observation this appears to be about 5 seconds. If they don't the ref calls play on and the ball is then "live". Exception to this rule is if the attacking team is taking a direct shot at goal, in which case they have 30 seconds to do so. Arguing with the ref. Even showing signs of dispute = 50m When the ball goes out of play the clock stops. Play must restart within a reasonable time, and the clock restarts. The game flows. |

More Aussie Rules.
If the referee blows his whistle for an infringement, the attacking team has the right to play on, and the ref will call advantage. Unlike rugby union, if they then lose the ball or the attack comes to nothing, they do not return to the original infringement. There are also rules about feigning injury which ensure the game continues, unless the injury is genuinely serious eg broken bones or head injuries. A certain amount of "playful" shoving and pushing is also allowed and even encouraged |

Is it not true that this is a debate that happened previously in football?
Remember Stoke City perhaps (?) and their successful playing style, or Wimbledon going a longer way back. And we had the set piece emphasis in the England era of long ball and statistics (Taylor period)? Is it just that styles and play like this come and go? |
