Barton had to pay Vine £75,000 in damages, but add in the costs and it's nearer £1M.

As it didn't get to court Barton paid 35k costs
His own legal fees likely were a couple of quid. |

couple of quid legal fees!
He paid Vine £75,000 initially plus costs (which means Vine's legal costs of around £200,000), then an additional £35,000. Vine himself said: "So Barton paid for the libel. He paid the costs. He paid interest on the costs. He paid the cost of losing a challenge on the costs. And he paid his own costs, which will be more than mine because he had fancier lawyers. He has lost at least half a million pounds." |

Vines costs were reported as £35,000
|

Barton likely had a minimal session and was advised to settle.
Won't have cost him much, if at all. |
|
By:
Ah right my bad, there was another settlement, you are correct
|
|
By:
“he has lost at least half a million pounds”! Yeah Vineweevil, and you are still a spineless sweetie wife despised by how many?!
|

I'm tell you how much he will have paid because I studied libel, youhavetolaugh, but as someone said to someone on Twitter during Covid: "You are arguing about Immunology with Right Said Fred!"

By:
Yep, I totally missed that part of story and caught either side
of it. Seems to have been end of July, and my betfair activity was minimal that week too, no photos on my phone for those dates too... Feels like I was abducted by aliens. Apologies again. |

The U.K. has crazy libel laws.
|
|
By:
The UK arrests about 12,000 people a year for hurty words on social media or even private whatsapp messages. Putin doesn't do that on that scale.
The libel laws are not as bad, just be able to prove what you say is true. You can say false stuff but there may be consequences. The costs are the real penalty. |
|
By:
More people arrested for hurty words than for attacking people with sticks and stones.

"Hurty words " can ruin lives .
You sound like typical bully . |

I couldn't give a shít if you think I sound like a bully.
Your government released a horde of actual criminals, many of them violent, last year to make space to lock people up for social media posts and private messages. Why don't you cry about that? |

I'm disappointed Mr Barton was given a custodial sentence even if it was not lengthy. I hope he'd bee asked to pay damages to the people he offended intentionally and repeatedly without provocation.
Mr Barton is a narcissist. He thinks he's superior to others. He also craves admiration - good or bad. |
|
By:
Fair enough, but nothing in your last sentence is a crime. I watched this Eluki woman on the box the other day. She’s nuts.
Boris Johnson, PPM and convicted criminal made similar disparaging “hurty word” racial insult about Muslim women. He remained free from prosecution as I recall. Minorities rule and the tail wags our dog as far as I am concerned. |

Joey Barton arrested on suspicion of attacking man near Liverpool golf club Joey Barton is due to appear in court charged with attacking a man near a golf club in Liverpool. The former footballer was arrested after the incident outside Huyton and Prescot golf club at 9pm on Sunday. Barton, 43, was one of two men detained by police as emergency services responded to reports a man had been seriously assaulted. Merseyside police confirmed that Barton would appear in court later on Tuesday on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent, a form of grievous bodily harm. The force said the alleged victim was in a serious but stable condition in hospital being treated for severe injuries to his face and body. Emergency services were called at about 9pm to reports of a man having been assaulted near the golf club. Barton and another man, Gary O’Grady, 50, were remanded in custody to appear at Wirral magistrates court later on Tuesday. Police officers remained at the scene on Tuesday morning carrying out fingertip searches behind a cordon. Officers could be seen checking neighbouring gardens while sniffer dogs were at the golf club, about eight miles east of Liverpool city centre. One neighbour told the Liverpool Echo on Tuesday that they had seen a man on the floor “with blood on him” before they rang 999. They said they saw police washing blood off the pavement on Monday: “When my partner went to work yesterday morning they had took the cordon down and they were washing the pavement. That’s why there’s sand all over the pavement from where they washed it.” If he's found guilty they need to throw away the key |

Gets worse, lol
Former England footballer and pundit Eni Aluko has been awarded more than £300,000 damages and legal costs after suing Joey Barton for libel over social media posts. Pundit Aluko brought legal action against Barton over two posts he made in 2024 on social media site X. Earlier the High Court heard the case had been stayed, meaning proceedings were halted and Barton was ordered to pay "substantial" damages and Aluko's legal costs. Gervase de Wilde, for Aluko, said that in the two X posts Barton, from Huyton, had wrongly claimed she had "cynically sought to exploit her status as an alleged victim of racism and bullying", and that she was a hypocrite. Barton - who managed Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers - did not attend the hearing, with Mr de Wilde telling the court that he was arrested on Monday and is currently being held in custody. |
