“I can’t believe … I’m sitting on the bench for 90 minutes,” the Egypt international said. “The third time on the bench, I think for the first time in my career. I’m very, very disappointed. I have done so much for this club down the years and especially last season. Now I’m sitting on the bench and I don’t know why.

“It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That is how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame.” He refused to specify who that person was.

“I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager and all of a sudden, we don’t have any relationship,” Salah said after Liverpool’s 3-3 draw at Elland Road on Saturday. “I don’t know why, but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn’t want me in the club.

“This club, I always support it. My kids will always support it. I love the club so much I will always do. I called my mum yesterday – you guys [journalists] didn’t know if I would start or not, but I knew. Yesterday I said [to my mum]: ‘Come to the Brighton game. I don’t know if I am going to play or not but I am going to enjoy it.’ In my head, I’m going to enjoy that game because I don’t know what is going to happen now. I will be in Anfield to say goodbye to the fans and go the Africa Cup. I don’t know what is going to happen when I am there.”

Asked directly if he thought that the Brighton fixture at Anfield next Saturday would be his last for Liverpool, he replied: “In football you never know. I don’t accept this situation. I have done so much for this club.”

“I got a lot of promises and so far I am on the bench for three games so I can’t say they have kept the promise,” he said. “It is not acceptable for me. I don’t know why this is happening to me. I don’t get it. I think if this was somewhere else, every club would protect its player. How I see it now is like: ‘You throw Mo under the bus because he is the problem in the team now.’ But I don’t think I am the problem. I have done so much for this club.

“The respect, I want to get. I don’t have to go every day fighting for my position because I earned it. I am not bigger than anyone but I earned my position. It’s football. It is what it is. I am top goalscorer, best player, winning the league in such a style, but I am the one who has to defend himself in front of the media and fans.

“After what I have done for the club it really hurts. You can imagine, really. After going from home to the club and you don’t know if you are starting. I know the club too well, I have been here many years. Tomorrow [the Sky pundit Jamie] Carragher is going to go for me again and again and that’s fine.”

“I have been at this club, scoring more than anyone in this generation, since I came to the Premier League. If I was somewhere else, everybody would go to the media and defend the players. I am the only one in this situation. Can I give an example?

“It’s silly but I am sorry. I remember a while ago, Harry Kane was not scoring for 10 games, and everyone in the media was like: ‘Oh, Harry will score for sure.’ When it comes to Mo everyone is like: ‘He needs to be on the bench.’”

Did he regret signing the new contract? “Imagine how bad I feel that I have to answer it, honestly,” he said. “That hurts, even the question hurts. This club, signing for this club, I will never regret it. I thought I’m going to renew here and end my career here, but this is not according to the plan, so I’m not regretting signing for the club for sure.

“Somehow it will end but the thing in my head is like: ‘Why it should end this way?’ Because I am too fit, just five months ago I was just winning every individual award so why should it go this direction?”

I can’t blame him.  He simply doesn’t deserve this treatment because he isn’t to blame.  A bit repetitive, a bit emotional, a bit too much”see what I did for this club” but right nevertheless.
He won’t beat the club though.  If Messi couldn’t cow Barcelona he won’t beat Liverpool.
Sad.  Hope he has a great Africa tournament.

I think he's talking about respect there rather than his place in the team. English is not his first language.

The statement is agenda driven tho, it was the same last year. There are people at the club who likely didn't want to give him an extension. Slot is prob one of them and maybe another. He wouldn't be talking about potentially leaving if there wasn't someone willing to pay the 400kpw he's on, which there normally isn't for that money at his age. Likely the Saudis.

Partly in regard to comments on other threads for context..

His legs certainly haven't gone, he was in fantastic shape for the first 5-6 months of last season to get the contract or other offer..

he doesn't like not being 'the guy' which when you bring in two 100m plus players you simply aren't and he's desperate to win an AFCON so doesn't want to run himself into the ground for 'the team' when he's never had to previously..contract extension was always a gammble at that age for numerous reasons (as said at the time) , he may well have thought (misguidedly) he'd have significant other clubs interested as well in Europe..with the domestic title won again, his main interest is likely Egypt..

Lets get one thing straight.....Arne Slot is a total bluffer. He was blessed to be handed a half decent team and won the league last year in one of the worst seasons historically with the 2nd place team having one of the worst points totals in recent EPL history.

Conceded over 40 goals as well which unless I'm mistake is the most conceded by a winning team this century.

Konate has been awful for the whole season and still Slot picks him. He is the only defender to make Antony Gordon look good as a striker.

It doesn't matter if he is a total bluffer, this issue isn't about him or the small, miniscule matter of whether Liverpool have a good season or not, it's far more important than that, this is about one player's treachery against a great club that have rewarded him massively for his service, service that his recent actions have displayed has provided Liverpool with success but he's shown that the success of the club is very much only of concern to him if it massages his ego in the process.

No I disagree with that duffy, sry.  Of course he is concerned with the success of the team which is why he is bitching about sitting on the bench.  He wants to be on there playing his part, imv.  Otherwise, if he didn’t care, he would be smiley/happy just to take the dosh.  It strikes me that he hasn’t been told why he is not picked, and it is the not telling that sickens any player.  For whatever reason they want to shift him, is my view.
He should have a heads up with Sir Kenny.  He was dropped a few times in his career, by club and country (when perfs. dipped a bit.  Not often by ‘pool but ant least three times by Scotland ) and he just rolled his sleeves up, got at it and back into the sides.  He would give him good advice imo.

Not shocking at all. Total common sense. Players get to a stage in their careers where they do not need to be running the b*llocks off themselves on some winter training ground to prove themselves and get picked.

Salah has shown what he brings. He single handedly dragged that team to a title last year.

On 9 February 2015, Brendan Rodgers said that Sterling had been offered "an incredible deal" to stay at Liverpool, rumoured to be a new contract worth £100,000 a week, but he also stated Liverpool were "certainly not a club that is going to give way, way above what a player is worth at a certain time in their career."However, on 20 March, Rodgers said Sterling's contract situation would not be resolved until the summer at least.

On 1 April, Sterling gave an unsanctioned interview with the BBC, where he confirmed he had turned down a new deal, but denied that this was for reasons of money. He had two years of a £35,000 per week contract remaining and said that he would not negotiate a new contract until the end of the season. Four days later, Brendan Rodgers criticised Sterling's advisors, particularly Aidy Ward, for the interview, saying: "You are not a 20-year-old boy and you pick up the phone and ask to speak to the BBC. You don't do it. Him in particular. But, of course, if he is asked to do that by other parties then that is what he'll do."

On 21 May, amid rumours that Sterling intended to leave the club, his agent, Ward, gave an interview to the London Evening Standard saying: "I don't care about the PR of the club and the club situation... He is definitely not signing. He's not signing for £700, £800, £900 thousand a week."

On 11 June, Liverpool reportedly rejected an initial bid of £30 million from Manchester City. One week later, they reportedly rejected a second bid from City for £40 million, with Liverpool valuing Sterling at £50 million. Sterling reportedly later asked to be left out of Liverpool's preseason tour to Asia, and missed two days of training through illness, which was met with widespread criticism from former Liverpool players, including Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness.

All of the supporting actors for 29 + 19 are gone and they haven't even tried to replace those players with like (Nunez, Diaz, Trent). Everything they did in the transfer market indicates a change in system with the attack focused on the centre (Isak) and possibly wing-backs (Kerkez, Frimpong). Missed out on Guehi and Leoni got injured so can't play it. Slot even made reference to not having a Jacob Murphy type on the right (to provide Isak assists). Why would you pay top dollar for Isak to play him as a false 9 for Salah?

Decent chance they hoodwinked him into signing just to get a fee from the Saudis, who will pay it. Hence the comments about assurances which have been reneged upon. Edwards likely behind it. Slot was hired as 'head coach' which was a shift from 'manager' and he likely has a lot more input into footballing matters than he did under Klopp who was  'manager'.

You haven't got a handle on Salah's character at all, so he defended Nunez..... but remember back to the very same Nunez missing a pen against PSG and the rest of the team consoling him but Salah stood apart, clearly angry, most probably because he saw the Ballon D'or slip away.

As for the "show some respect" quote to the fans as they drooled over the new signings in comparison to who was leaving, that would have been primarily driven by jealousy at the realizeation that he may no longer be the centre of the universe rather than loyalty to erstwhile compatriots.

When a player, and a top player, is very publicly dropped he deserves to be spoken to and told why.  I don’t think Slot has done that, hence this now blown up into a major issue.
For me is right up there with Rush and Dalglish in the goal and performance return he has delivered.  Would either of these two have been vilified in this manner?  I don’t think so.  Shame on Slot.

The power to do what?last time he went public he was almost out of contract and lpool would have lost out on the transfer fee esp if he went to saudi, this time he is tied in so if he wants out they get paid, so they are not time pressured to deal with him and he's either apologising or they get him sold, they need to back the manager and feck him out

Well let us hope that potential bidders for Salah are not aware of the attrition placed on Liverpool's finances by his contract - about £10 for every seat at Anfield, every game.

Don't expect many bids before the conclusion of the African Cup Of Nations. Then it's not too long to the end of season, depending on what Liverpool are playing for. It's not for Liverpool but it could be ideal preparation for the World Cup next summer for Mo.

Laugh

Salah's fitness levels are legendary. Now, more than ever, Mo has to harness his strength for the big competitions: Africa Cup Of Nations and 2026 World Cup.

The current impasse could help him ensure he competes in top form for his country. Not ideal for the club paying his wages, obviously.

Coming soon...

Protesters picketing the Sports Personality of the Year 2025 ceremony have said they are there to represent the 140,000 people who wanted the BBC to drop footballer Mo Salah from the shortlist.

One of the organisers of a demonstration comprised of traffic accident victims, angered by Salah’s insensitive remarks regarding actual victims of being run over by a bus, accused the corporation of hypocrisy by keeping Salah on the list.

I did a check on Grok for media articles advocating dropping Kane from the England side after his p1sspoor Euros tournament.
it came up with 2.
Paul Scholes.
And Chris Sutton on the daily mail podcast.
From memory I can recall Daragh MacAntony saying the same thing on Talksport.

As soon as Mo piped up the Mersey walls of jehrico have crashed all over him from the ex Liverpool pundits. And there a fluck of a lot of them.

I did notice that a certain Mr Wayne 'Wazza' Rooney piled in also. I seem to recall in 2010 Wazza holding out on signing a new Man U contract. Threatening to sign for City and having a go at the UTD transfer policy.
The wall of silence from the UK media was quite astonishing.
Rooney as the great white hope of the ever-hopeless England national team was afforded a free pass. Obviously.

Ian Holloway was the only one to raise his head above the parapet when he criticised Rooney in a press conference.
Holloway's Blackpool team had been promised every assistance in their bid to avoid relegation by Sir Alexander Chapman Ferguson. The final game was at Old Trafford.
Perhaps remembering Ollie's impertinence SAF brought on Rooney and fellow Ingerlund striker Michael Owen with the score at 2-2.
You can guess the rest...

For me it is always a failure of management when a player of Salah’s profile goes rogue

100% spot on.

I've said it before most Dutch coaches are bullies. They want total control and are incapable of managing big names.

Even the successful ones like LVG have more than their fair share of run ins with top class players.

Then you have the lower grade ones like Slot or Ten Hag who think replacing Ronaldo with Weghorst or Salah with some other no mark is a sign of strong management.

Slot will end up at Go Ahead Eagles in a few seasons like ETH.

Liverpool have a simple decision.....bin Slot and get a decent manager in who can get them into the CL. A good coach would basically play Salah until they can move him on and keep any discontent to a minimum. Salah btw has been far better than some of the utter muck he has picked this season....Gakpo, Konate, Van Dijk etc.... all stinking it up

I think his was the worst gob ever, for all sorts of reasons, not least off which was the cockers ignorance of the fact that cameras were now 3verywhere, and for someone who worked in the Media that was a pretty fundamental blunder.  Visually though, Rikjaard’s “gob” on Rudi Voller takes some beating for visual impact.  It was a floaty white job with a measure of weighty phlegm which got tangled in Voller’s newly permed hairdo then gradually, drip by gravity-pulling drip, fell off as Voller walked away.  Then he noticed it.  What a look!!!
