It's a matter of opinion I guess. Love Kane and all he done for Spurs and England, but Gazza is probably still my favourite.

No unless he wins a world cup. Bobby Charlton or Bobby Moore for me.

Charlton/Best/Moore before I was old enough to form an opinion, but I'd say at his best Gazza was the most talented player to play for England in my memory.  I think Peter Shilton and Kevin Keegan are right up there.  Bellingham has the potential to be.  I think Kane is in his best ever form, and in terms of consistency is clearly one of England's greatest modern players

Perhaps Bobby Charlton was England's greatest, 106 caps and 49 goals, at a time of fewer international matches.
Remember England, as hosts, did not have a 1966 World Cup qualification campaign.
Bobby Moore's international career was 11 years, Bobby Charlton 12 years, Rooney (15), Beckham (13), Gerrard (14), Cole (13), Lampard (15).

Charlton was the greatest at getting away with it scot-free.

Lineker was a better finisher than Kane.

Jimmy Greaves better than both.

If you rule out alkies, wife beaters, nonces and flat track bullies, Carlton Palmer is in the lead so far.

Geoff Hurst must be up there surely, I'm not English btw, but to score a hat trick for England in world cup final at Wembley is some achievement in football.

Some players just get lucky and are in the right place at the right time.  He was a good player who knew where the net ( and occasionally the crossbar ) was.    He did win the Cup Winners Cup with West Ham too so deserves respect for that too.
From match 2 onwards Charlton ran the show.  Without him they would have struggled.
There is a story which did the rounds that Ramsey @ training one day told Ball and Stiles to come with him.  He took them to a field where a man was exercising his pet collie.  Every time he threw the ball the dog fetched it and laid it at his master’s feet. Ramsay reputedly turned to the two and told them,…….”each of you are the dog and the master is Bobby Charlton.  Your job is to get the ball and give it to him”.  That’s how important Charlton was to that England team, and he proved it in ‘66.

Could Hurst lace Law or Dalglish's boots honcho ? probably not, however he still done something they would have dreamed of. I'm sure you know I don't have a Union Jack or King george flag outside my house and watch re runs of 1966 WC, but the lad done it, nobody can argue with that.

Jimmy Greaves was the man.  Just something else.  Suffered injury, Hurst got in, and to his immense credit rose to the occasion, took his chance and kept the position.
He was big but mobile, athletic and positive.  Good touch, good on the ground and useful in the air and scored lots of goals.  Can’t compare to others but if I was given the choice of either of him, Greaves, Law or Dalglish I’d say - give me all four and I’ll work something out! 

Trouble is most people people go for someone they have seen, which limits the title of best ever, however if you go for reputations, Sir Stanly Matthews would definitely be in the echolon. Personally best players I have seen Jimmy Greaves, definitely the best goalscorer, if you have not watched him in his matches in Italy , please do. Bobby Charlton, really was a good player,Bobby Moore, supreme defender, Gordon Banks, great goalkeeper. Billy Wright had 105 caps so presumably was good.

I think Kane ought to be knighted. He puts in more than any England player in the last 20 years. He's trumped over his critics in Europe too.

You can tell a good football player as they seem to have a force field around them and no-one can get near them. Players I’ve seen with this attribute, Van Basten, Messi and Gascoigne.

Certainly agree about bale absolutely unplayable at his best and by far the best British player of the last 50 years when on song,however for those who saw George best albeit for not long enough will know he was the best

Oh yes as you say there wasn’t many chances to see them back then really only world cups and European cup finals but always something I looked forward to .

Even the European championships were so different from now there was only bits to see.

Kane has gone missing in nearly every really big game for club and country. What did he do in 2 euros finals, CL final, League cup final? Can you actually even remember whether he was on the pitch off the top of your head? If he did and they were 30 years ago you would.

Yes, fair point, up to a point.  Suffered in the Euros final by waistcoat telling them to defend after going one up.  Was clearly less than fully fit in the CL final.  Still one of the best English players of the last 15+ years.

don't think they were told to defend, the italians just had better technicians and got their foot on the ball and played themselves into it, gaining momentum and confidence continuously

I like Kane but lurka sums him up very well.

the italians did not panic they were, in the main, control of the ball and knew eventually they would wear england down

If you are a knocker of Kane then you really must hate the rest of English football.

The Italians were quite demoralised to my eye yet waistcoat had a 1-0 leading England, AT HOME IN A MAJOR FINAL,retreat, which ALLOWED Italy to gain a foothold in the game.  No doubt about that for me. And many others who discussed it at the time.

i watched the game myself no idea about discussion whoever there are you refer to, but imo italians kept a clear head, don't panic, there is a long way to go, but we are all entitled to our opinions,

imo, he is a wonderful player, definitely the best english player of his generation.

i think he is a joy to watch, as well as all the goals he is very hardworking and he has a great football brain.
