Law 12 – Fouls and Misconduct states that a tackle is fair if:

1. The player plays the ball first, or

It's a grey area I think

Does Pope get a clear touch ? He touches it but it's not a hugely effective touch

Is the tackle careless or reckless ? I don't think so. Keeper is making a fair effort to get the ball which he does get a touch on

I personally find it a bit ambiguous so it's a hard call. I would say no penalty personally as it's a fair tackle and he contacts the ball first

no penalty, the referee had an awful lot of problems to solve. Player was through on goal, the foul looked unintentional. It did look a penalty, however the ball was running slightly towards the goal line and Arsenal player would of had to turn to score/ Had he given the penalty, the keeper had to be sent off. That decision could of gone either way. The Newcastle goal just scored, no doubt was a fair goal.

One thing that stands out to me is how little Newcastle switch flanks further up the pitch. There was a point today where Livramento was screaming for ball to be switched. He was in acres of space and Joelinton just played it down the flank and lost the ball.

The overturned pen,

Not sure of the rules,but
He was fouled first, then keeper touched the ball 2nd after the arsenal player touched the ball first.

I thought the opposing player had to touch the ball first,

Otherwise you can foul someone, run after the ball then touch it.

Even after keeper touched it,the attacker could still continue to get the ball and score, but was prevented from doing so.

Var is to stop clear and obvious errors,

Like with pixel off sides, and micro touches, these aren’t clear and obvious mistakes, they are insignificant touches.

Surely it has to be relevant touches, altering the direction of the ball, not finger nail glances resulting in penalties,if the direction of the ball isn’t altered ,then the infringement is irrelevant.
Report comingupthehill September 29, 2025 12:11 AM BST
The 2nd hand ball pen.

Not given because it grazed his shin,so can’t be handball as it came off his body first.

So ,any defender on goal line ,dive at shot with both hands near head, try and get your head on it a bit, then catch the ball.

Or if the shot is eak, just flick it up off foot or knee, then catch the ball and throw it back to your keeper..

They’ve literally got so obsessed with accurate micro detail,to the enth degree, that they’ve missed the bigger picture.

It’s become a competition in finding any excuse to over turn a decision.

They should scrap var and just get the ref to watch 1 replay from 1 angle,to check he’s not completely got it wrong, same for offsides,if he looks on or off by the naked eye from 1 replay, then that’s the decision.

Nuno certainly had them more organised compared to their previous games this season.

They are not dreadful WD and neither are the toffees. But they are symptomatic of the averageness that purveys the Premier League, which is hyped up to the eyeballs but in reality is not great in depth.
How many goals are due to really poor defending ?

Everton have the nucleus of a decent side but desperately lack a striker who can put the ball in the net, trouble is there are not many of those around.

Today, apart from Haaland, Gyökeres and Isak, there's no other current Premier League striker anywhere near the level of those above,  Watkins? Pedro? Tesco Sekso? Beto? Larsson? Wood? Welbeck? Muniz? Mateta? Fulkrug? Richarlison? Evanilson? Waltermitty? Calvert-Lewin? Isidor? Thiago? Foster?

Problem is we started punishing foul play, so strikers flourished
and attacking play.

Now we allow defenders to foul all the time with little sanction, and
you can punch somebody in the face and if they don't fall
down it's just play on. An elbow to stomach is a yellow card,
whilst a feigned head butt still brings a red.

Bowen is as good as Dwight yorke

Salah is a decent striker,

But world football in general lacks decent strikers

I picked up the game a few minutes before West Ham scored. I could not believe how poorly Everton defended. They seemed wide open and like cart horses. Some of the close control was appalling. That is just my view on what I saw. I would be inclined to bet against both sides when the opportunity arose..

Bit simplistic basing your judgement of EFC on 30 minutes of football WD and ignoring all the good signs in the previous four and a half games . Some of the attacking link play between Jack, Ndiaye and KDH has been a joy to watch. A lack of close control is fairly endemic throughout the EPL, it's not just confined to the two teams last night. Considering the billiard tables that they play on these days, the lack of skill generally on show is depressing.
