In football, "tapping up" refers to a club or its representatives illegally attempting to persuade a player under contract with another club to join them without the permission of the player's current club. It's a breach of transfer regulations and can lead to disciplinary action

Here's a more detailed explanation:
Contractual Obligation:
Players are under contract with their respective clubs, which means they are not free to negotiate with other clubs without their current club's consent.
The Act of Tapping Up:
Tapping up involves a club or its representatives contacting a player (or their agent) to try and convince them to move clubs, without informing or getting permission from the player's current club.
Why it's Wrong:
This practice is considered unethical and disruptive to the transfer market because it undermines the established process for player transfers and can lead to instability within a club.
Common Methods:
Tapping up can occur through direct contact with the player, through their agent, or even indirectly through media statements expressing interest in the player.
Enforcement:
While the rule against tapping up is in place, it can be difficult to prove, and clubs often resort to reporting such instances only when they are very public or damaging.
Examples:
Notable instances of alleged tapping up include Liverpool's pursuit of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton and Atletico Madrid's accusations against Barcelona regarding Antoine Griezmann

can a team be deducted points if they are found guilty?

“Selling" club can refuse to deal with the
tappers, but likely they've been doing tapping
of their own.

Agents like monets, so facilitate transfers.
