I think he's a very good manager, the only thing annoys me is the idiot overpaid pundits constantly calling him Pep, which leads to even thicker punters calling him Pep.

I don't think CUTH's analysis is quite correct. La Liga was fairly competitive back then with Valencia having won a couple of titles and the likes of Villarreal, Atleti and Sevilla all competitive. He took over a Barca team in the doldrums and turned them into (imo) the best club side we've ever seen. And it was incredibly exciting football, not robotic at all.
He did very well domestically at Bayern but couldn't make the final step in the CL. And obviously he's continued to be successful at City, eventually taking them to the treble. He's always been at big clubs and so has always had money to spend but he's also generally been the best wherever he's been. That said, he's been managing at the top level for nearly twenty years now and every manager and style has a shelf life, and I wonder if he's coming to the end of his. |

Hard to argue with any of that PoP. I like the style of football too, each to their own I guess.

100% agree with OP.
I despair when watching a girls game in Spain when they played it out from a goal kick. It is bloody hard to do even as a highly paid professional. I remember the times Arsenal tried it, lost it and gave away a goal. This season and last they are so much better at it but at the cost of speed and the counter attack. The point is attackers get paid the best wages to score goals that is the hardest part of the game. Coaches and defenders have caught up and exposed how to defeat Peps system although this season he has not had the best team. Usually the best team wins whatever the system. What does my swede is the over coaching and percentage type football. I want to see players taking a chance with a long pass, or forward pass in the final third or taking a player on with the ball. That is what makes the game exciting. The Wilkins crab shuffle is boring. The low block is the way to play now against better financed teams. It is a great equaliser like muddy pitches. You cannot stop speed with money. You can counter it with speedy defenders but you cannot stop even poor people from running fast. The other thing I would do when playing the aristo's is make the pitch disgustingly small to the limits of the rules. If you are not cheating you are not trying hard enough! |

Sometimes a long pass is the percentage play
Rugby and American football limit forward passes because they are so effective in some situations. Pep picked up on possession being banned in basketball and lack of a shot clock, and no front court to back court violation alongside side full court and half court presses to build a footy system.. But likely he's never played rugby... |

you need to hope that WILL FELLA fails at Southampton as he makes pep look like ANGE AND ARRY REDKNAPP combined

Southampton were way too possession based on arrival in prem league anyway
Newcastle down to 10 men, but 1 up, and soton just wanted to keep ball and take potshots... 78% possession 4 shots on target Would hate to see a team take that more possession based |

saw the WILL FOOTBALL MANAGER FELLA on MNF, all straight and horizontal lines across the pitch no your lanes
said in a team talk 20 grand a week players would only listen to him for 6,7 mins before they lost interest, for a 100 quid sky viewers had to listen to him for over an HR, carra fell asleep after 15 mins ![]() |

It’s really difficult to assess if pep is great or not,
Surely managers of lesser teams, with small budgets, balancing different tactics to who you are playing are better. Pep’s career, get best team and players.accept you ll have the ball a lot and teams will sit back, make keeper and defenders part of the attack because you haven’t got the numbers up front.if lose ball and they try and break fast, commit foul ,stop game. All his teams played the same way,he’s never had to find a solution or different way to win.he seems to be good with man to man management, making superstars play for him.given he’s always had the best players on the most money all he needs to do is ask them to try a bit. Possession suits everyone, Players Don’t have to run to much Rack up opta points for pass completions ,so your stats look good Move the ball on,so no responsibility or risk. Do this well and wait for extension to contract. It’s crazy that teams only start to play on 80mins when they need a goal.do this earlier, the manager should make this happen with tactics and subs. Ruben, mainoo came on as sub in final,on 88 mins.what is the logic, quality player, If losing 1-0. Why make any sub at 88mins,its a time wasting tactic,it can’t alter the game that late.literally last throw of dice desperation tactic. |

Pep coming to the end,
Age or desire can only bring a good manager to the end. A naturally good manager ,just solves problems,it’s simple, assess situation, find a solution.(not on 88mins). Loads of footballers aren’t clever enough to be managers, they can’t solve problems, Fergies players who failed Giggs Neville’s Rooney Etc etc. The great players crap manager are because they just repeat what other managers have done, but every problem is new,so copy and paste doesn’t work. Ole solskar, watched the game and studied defenders, then came on and scored from a weakness he’d spotted,he did ok as a manager. You see some subs,no boots on,no shin pads, not warmed up,not listening to coaches with the iPads, then when they retire announce they want to be a manager, then .some idiotic chairman gives him a job and they get relegated. I reckon a mathematics professor, who holds a season ticket for a team for 20 years, would make a great manager. Understanding football, and problem solving, understanding people. Wayne Rooney, left school at 12,boxer or football, brilliant player, thick as pig shot. Gets club after club, and when that fails, bbc get him on,offers nothing off the pitch, great on it. |
