I cant remember where but I was at away game watching BORO that day and all the chat in a motorway cafe was about the fire,I remember phoning my mam from the motorway cafe just for a little chat

boro nearly went bankrupt in 86 and I can remember playing Bradford in 1st leg of play off,s a few yrs later

I was at Boro the day the wall collapsed against Man Utd as a youngster.  I think only the two fatalaties.  I recall walking past the collapsed wall on the way out and seeing a bloke sitting down  motionless covered in blood and dust

Think that was 1989.  IIRC, On the final weekend of matches Villa were just behind Boro and Bradford battling for the 2nd automatic slot.  Villa drew, but unbelievably Bradford and Boro both lost.  Boro, I think won the play offs, beating Chelsea in the final.

Watched the second half of this last night ,looked very good ,maybe they'll repeat it on BBC 3 or 4 shortly .

yep the battle of Stamford bridge, Chelsea loons storming the fences was there that day carnage for hrs after game, chavs were crying like babies saying BORO had waterlogged the boropitch in 1st leg by over watering

think BORO won 2 nil at home Trevor senior scored I think and lost 1 nil away

interesting thoughts about BORO v Chelsea game 35 yrs on, from memory not sure but did 4,5, 6,7th place play off to see who played Chelsea in winner takes all game,not sure if Chelsea finished 3rd or 4th btm, be the way to go today sort of prove your worth a place in EPL,if they made it 4th bottom of EPL,this yr spuds and UTD would be taking time off from preparing to get in to ch LG to fight for a place in EPL

Both Bradford and Hillsborough had a massive impact at the time and continue to when referenced...barely a weekend not at football somewhere in 80's and early 90's..

we used to watch a video of the fire every year in a former job showing how quick fire travelled, the other video we watched was a b & q store going up in about 4 minutes as well. They did give us the option not to watch them.

The Bradford City stadium fire occurred during a Football League Third Division match on Saturday 11 May 1985 at the Valley Parade stadium in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, killing 56 spectators and injuring at least 265. The stadium was known for its antiquated design and facilities, which included the wooden roof of the main stand. Previous warnings had also been given about a major build-up of litter in the cavity below the stand. The stand had been officially condemned and was due to be replaced with a steel structure after the season ended.

The match between Bradford City and Lincoln City, the final game of the season, had started in a celebratory atmosphere with Bradford receiving the Third Division championship trophy. At 3:40 pm, television commentator John Helm remarked upon a small fire in the main stand; in less than four minutes, with the windy conditions, the fire had engulfed the whole stand. In the panic that ensued, fleeing crowds escaped on to the pitch but others at the back of the stand tried to break down locked exit doors to escape. Many were burnt to death at the turnstile gates, which had also been locked after the match had begun. There were many cases of heroism, with more than 50 people later receiving police awards or commendations for bravery.

The disaster led to rigid new safety standards in UK stadiums, including the banning of new wooden grandstands. It was also a catalyst for the substantial redevelopment and modernisation of many British football grounds within the following thirty years. Bradford City continues to support the Bradford Burns Unit, at the University of Bradford, as its official charity.

both Hillsborough (Police mismanagement) and Bradford and indeed Hysel (decrepit old stadium) totally avoidable and all the more horrible for that..

Of you were a fireman interested you have my deepest respect.  I hope your health hasn't suffered like so many.  I know of two who suffered serious, debilitating strokes as a result of the stresses their bodies had to take.
