The phone he used belonged to a Liverpool photographer, not a fan, and was a Google Pixel 9 Pro, a brand Liverpool has a commercial deal with. Some rival fans on social media called it a “planned marketing stunt,” pointing to the club’s advertising ties and the phone being handed to Salah by a club employee. However, Salah had hinted at planning such a celebration earlier. In March 2025, he told a club insider he wanted to take a selfie with fans, hoping the final one would be with the Premier League trophy. He later explained to the BBC, “At the beginning of the season I always took selfies with the players. I had to think of something special. I thought a bit about the idea and it was fine.” Liverpool fans defended him, with one saying, “Salah wanted to celebrate a goal with the fans on a selfie, it’s not purely a marketing scheme, they’re not gonna use an iPhone are they.” Another argued, “All season at Anfield they’ve been filming the goals with these phones as a marketing ad, Salah took a selfie with the phone on our biggest day of the year who tf cares.”
